Primary Bone Tumors of the Spine-Proposal for Treatment Based on a Single Centre Experience.

This study reports a large single-center series of primary bone tumors of the spine (PBTs). We aimed to review the concepts for management, as this kind of tumor represents a very rare entity, and also propose a new treatment algorithm. Retrospective analysis revealed 92 patients receiving surgery for PBTs from 2007 to 2019 at our center. They were analyzed based on surgical management and the course of the disease. A total of 145 surgical procedures were performed (50 cervical, 46 thoracic, 28 lumbar, and 21 sacral). Complete tumor resection was achieved in 65%, of which 22% showed tumor recu

Electronic Patient Symptom Management Program to Support Patients Receiving Cancer Treatment at Home During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: Remote patient monitoring became critical for patients receiving cancer treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. We sought to test feasibility of an electronic patient symptom management program implemented during a pandemic. We collected and analyzed the real-world data to inform practice quality improvement and understand the patient experience. METHODS: Eligible patients had breast, lung, or ovarian cancers, multiple myeloma, or acute myeloid leukemia and 12 weeks of planned chemotherapy. Patients were notified that a symptom survey with common symptoms derived from the National

Time to haematologist visit and non-haematological referral from primary health care during blood cancer diagnosis - findings from a large national survey in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Blood cancers are the third most common cancer in Australia. However, little is known about their diagnostic pathway in the Australian context. This research aimed to assess the interval between first primary health care (PHC) contact and first haematologist visit, and referrals to specialists other than haematologists (non-haematological referrals) during blood cancer diagnoses. METHODS: An online national survey was conducted with patients living with blood cancers, such as leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) and myelodysplastic neoplasms (MD

2021 European Myeloma Network review and consensus statement on smoldering multiple myeloma: how to distinguish (and manage) Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

According to the updated International Myeloma Working Group criteria, smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) is an asymptomatic plasma cell disorder characterized by an M-component >3 g/dL, bone marrow plasma cell infiltration >10% and <60%, and absence of any myeloma-defining event. Active multiple myeloma is preceded by SMM, with a median time to progression of approximately 5 years. Cases of SMM range from the extremes of "monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance-like", in which patients never progress during their lifetimes, to "early multiple myeloma", in which transformation into s

Effects of a Multimodal Lifestyle Intervention on Cardiometabolic Markers in People with Progressive Multiple Sclerosis: A Secondary Analysis of a Pilot Study.

Background: Cardiometabolic comorbidities are common in multiple sclerosis (MS), and lifestyle interventions are effective in managing these conditions in the general population, though evidence in the MS patient population is limited. Objective: To evaluate the effect of a multimodal lifestyle intervention on serum apolipoproteins (Apo), creatine kinase (CK), glucose, and insulin in people with progressive MS (PwPMS). Methods: This study included n = 19 PwPMS who participated in a 12-month multimodal lifestyle intervention (including a modified Paleolithic diet, exercise, neuromuscular electr

Myeloma Spine and Bone Damage Score (MSBDS) on Whole-Body Computed Tomography (WBCT): Multiple Reader Agreement in a Multicenter Reliability Study.

Objective: To assess the reliability of the myeloma spine and bone damage score (MSBDS) across multiple readers with different levels of expertise and from different institutions. Methods: A reliability exercise, including 104 data sets of static images and complete CT examinations of patients affected by multiple myeloma (MM), was performed. A complementary imaging atlas provided detailed examples of the MSBDS scores, including low-risk and high-risk lesions. A total of 15 readers testing the MSBDS were evaluated. ICC estimates and their 95% confidence intervals were calculated based on mean

BackgroundAdvanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) for human use have advanced globally with the rapid adoption of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies in haemato-oncology. CAR-T cell therapy and ATMPs have unique, significant acute and chronic toxicities, and appropriate patient care is crucial. Significant challenges, including the need for nurse education and training, accompany optimal patient success and benefits.ObjectivesThis study aimed to describe nurses' training needs in relation to ATMP management and patient care.MethodsA cross-sectional online survey was performe

The UK consensus supporting effective introduction of novel treatments for multiple myeloma in the National Health Service.

IntroductionMultiple myeloma (MM) is a relapsing, debilitating blood cancer which remains incurable despite advances in treatments. Patients typically receive multiple lines of treatment, to which they become refractory, thereby limiting treatment options. B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA) bispecific antibodies (BsAbs) represent a novel modality of treatment that has significant efficacy for relapsed or refractory patients. The objective was to develop consensus statements for the effective implementation of BCMA BsAbs for relapsed or refractory MM patients within the National Health Service (NH

Impact of Social Needs and Identity Experiences on the Burden of Illness in Patients with Multiple Myeloma: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a common hematologic malignancy, but due to its incurable nature, patients experience many relapses in their lifetime and hence face unique challenges. This mixed-methods study consisting of an online survey and subsequent focus groups aimed to understand how social and identity experiences affected the diagnostic, treatment, and care journey for patients with MM. Twenty-three adult patients with MM participated in this study. The survey participants identified common determinants negatively impacting their health, including mental health concerns (experienced by 90.5%

Characteristics of Patients and Treatment Recommendations from a Multidisciplinary Spinal Tumor Program.

Objective: We describe characteristics of patient and treatment recommendations from a spinal tumor board at one institution, including representation from palliative care. Background: The impact of prospective multidisciplinary input for patients with spinal tumors is poorly understood despite their increasing complexity. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 622 cases sequentially discussed at a weekly spinal tumor board, and abstracted patient and treatment information from the medical record and meeting minutes. Results: From April 2017 to February 2019, 622 cases representing 438 unique pa

Implementation of electronic prospective surveillance models in cancer care: a scoping review.

BackgroundElectronic prospective surveillance models (ePSMs) for cancer rehabilitation include routine monitoring of the development of treatment toxicities and impairments via electronic patient-reported outcomes. Implementing ePSMs to address the knowledge-to-practice gap between the high incidence of impairments and low uptake of rehabilitation services is a top priority in cancer care.MethodsWe conducted a scoping review to understand the state of the evidence concerning the implementation of ePSMs in oncology. Seven electronic databases were searched from inception to February 2021. All a
