Borrow, don't breed: How historical controls can cut concurrent animal numbers.

Recommendation 013/2026 of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) considers a reduction of concurrent control animals possible when historical control data demonstrate stability. However, the recommendation provides no method for quantifying stability or determining the magnitude of reduction. We present a framework that addresses this gap for designs whose control group size follows from a power calculation on pre-specified continuous endpoints, each assessed separately. Designs whose group size is prescribed by a test guideline, as in standard repeated-dose toxicity studies,

Genome-Wide Differentiation, Inbreeding, and Candidate Selection Loci in Local Vietnamese Pig Breeds.

Vietnam harbors exceptional genetic diversity among at least 26 indigenous pig breeds. We analyzed genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data from 90 animals representing 15 local Vietnamese breeds and six Landrace pigs using principal component analysis, the windowed fixation index (FST), cross-population extended haplotype homozygosity (XP-EHH), within-population integrated haplotype score (iHS), and runs of homozygosity (ROHs). The population structure was consistent with a north-south differentiation axis, and Ba Xuyen showed elevated heterozygosity, providing suggestive evidenc

Comparative Anatomy of the Hyoid Apparatus in Various Dog Breeds: Insights From Clinical Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Studying the hyoid bone in dogs is of significant importance in veterinary surgery and anatomy, as it aids in understanding how variations in this structure may affect tongue mobility, swallowing and vocalisation across breeds. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to provide preliminary insights into the relationship between structural differences in the hyoid bone and breed-specific functional adaptations in tongue shape and movement by analysing shape variations within the hyoid apparatus. METHODS: Hyoid bones from computed tomography images of 26 dogs were modelled, and principal compo

Mitogenome Insights Into the Domestication and Phylogeography of Zebu Cattle: A Focus on Pakistani Breeds and Asian Lineages.

Zebu cattle (Bos indicus) represent a critical livestock resource in the arid and semi-arid regions, known for their disease resistance, heat tolerance and physiological hardiness. Despite their agricultural importance, the precise matrilineal evolutionary history, genetic diversity and demographic trajectory remain incompletely resolved within the broader context of South Asian cattle domestication. This study explores the phylogeographic patterns and maternal lineage diversity of zebu cattle through complete mitochondrial genomes (mtDNA), the D-loop, and hypervariable regions from 50 individ

Breed-Specific Dental Variations in Dogs Assessing Malocclusions Using Computed Tomography (CT).

Dental malocclusions are common and often underdiagnosed situations in dogs, which might result in oral trauma, impaired mastication, and periodontal disease. Nevertheless, scientific investigations into breed-specific variations in dentition remain scarce. To evaluate breed-specific dental variations in dogs, a retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 92 clinical canine head computed tomography (CT) scans obtained in Chengdu, China, representing a range of breeds and skull morphologies. Dental alignment and occlusal relationships were calculated using standardized malocclusion

Factors influencing the success of laparoscopic artificial insemination in Île-de-France sheep breed.

Several factors can influence the effectiveness of laparoscopic artificial insemination in sheep. The season, the lunar phase, meteorological parameters and farm management factors were investigated to determine which ones affect pregnancy rate. A total of 250 Île-de-France ewes were inseminated by laparoscopy in spring (March, April) and in autumn (October, November). In the autumn season, only 20.0% of the inseminated ewes became pregnant while in spring, this was 51.3%. In the spring season, an extreme change in minimum temperature affected negatively the probability of conception (P = 0.06

Exploring Genomic Variability in the Mediterranean Buffalo Breed: A Step Towards Custom SNP Array.

Genomic improvement and sustainable breeding of Mediterranean buffalo are hampered by the lack of breed-specific genomic resources compared with bovine. To address this gap, we aimed to identify a comprehensive set of high-confidence single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in Mediterranean buffalo and evaluate their informativeness across other buffalo populations. A total of 58 whole-genome sequencing samples, from three different sets, were merged through the integration of short- and long-read sequencing technologies. Variants, both unique and shared among datasets, were identified using a c…

A Splice Acceptor Variant in DLL3 Is Associated with Spondylocostal Dysostosis in a Litter of Mixed-Breed Dogs.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Spondylocostal dysostosis (SCDO) is a rare disorder characterized by congenital malformations of the spine and ribs. SCDO affects 1 in 40,000 human births, with rare cases also reported in dogs. Mutations in DLL3, encoding a critical Notch signaling pathway ligand, account for a majority of human SCDO cases. The remaining cases have variants in HES7, LFNG, MESP2, RIPPLY2, TBX6, and DLL1, which code for proteins in the Notch pathway. A mixed-breed litter of three dogs presented with varying degrees of spinal malformations and underwent comprehensive phenotyping including

Breed-specific responses to coccidiosis in chickens: identification of intestinal bacteria linked to disease resistance.

BACKGROUND: Coccidiosis, caused by Eimeria parasites, is a major enteric disease in poultry, significantly impacting animal health, production performance, and welfare. This disease imposes a substantial economic burden, costing the global poultry industry up to $13 billion annually. However, effective mitigation strategies for coccidiosis remain elusive. While different chicken breeds exhibit varying resistance to coccidiosis, no commensal bacteria have been directly linked to this resistance. METHODS: To assess relative resistance of different breeds to coccidiosis, 10-day-old Fayoumi M5.1,

An Unreported Variant of the Rhomboideus Muscle With an Additional Cervical Origin in a Cross-Breed Dog Cadaver.

The m. rhomboideus of domestic dogs typically originates from the dorsal median raphe of the neck and cranial thorax, with a distinct slip from the occiput, and is composed of the three parts: cervicis, thoracis and capitis. Here, an additional muscular slip was identified on the left side of an adult male cross-breed dog cadaver. This ribbon-shaped slip arose indirectly via tendinous fibres from the transverse process of the second cervical vertebra and extended caudodorsally to join the capital part near its scapular insertion. The slip was innervated by ventral branches of the cervical spin

Arterial blood sampling via dorsal pedal artery in conscious small-breed dogs.

OBJECTIVE: Arterial blood sampling is typically performed in lateral recumbency. In dogs with suspected hypoxemia, arterial blood sampling in this position may exacerbate hypoxemia. Upright positioning for dorsal pedal artery sampling often reduces restraint and eases breathing in dyspneic dogs. The objective of this technical tutorial video is to demonstrate a safe and accurate method for performing arterial blood sampling, even in conscious small-breed dogs. ANIMALS: Dogs, especially those of small breeds. METHODS: The arterial puncture site was clipped, and a topical local anesthetic was

Combined intra- and extracapsular stabilization for CCL rupture in a toy-breed dog: a case report.

Cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) rupture is a frequent orthopedic condition leading to hindlimb dysfunction in dogs. While tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) has become the predominant surgical choice in large breeds, its use in toy-breed dogs remains controversial due to anatomical constraints and implant limitations. This case report presents a 10-year-old, 2.0 kg Maltese with CrCL rupture and underlying cardiac disease, for whom osteotomy was contraindicated. A hybrid stabilization technique was performed, combining intra-articular suture placement with extracapsular anchoring via bon

A large case-control study indicates a breed-specific predisposition to feline tooth resorption.

Tooth resorption (TR) is one of the most common dental diseases of cats. It is a painful condition leading to tooth loss. The etiology of TR remains unclear, but old age, breed, other oral and dental diseases, and environmental factors are suspected predisposing factors. In our study, we used part of the data from the extensive feline health online survey of 8115 Finnish cats. As TR is difficult to detect and as the feline health survey included diagnoses defined by both veterinarians and the owners, we limited our study to a subpopulation of cats diagnosed with oral or dental disease by a vet
