Intracerebroventricular administration of calcium severely depressed the locomotor activity of unanesthetized mice, producing ataxic gait and motor incoordination. Pretreatment with pentobarbital (30 mg/kg, IP) twice daily for 2 and 6 days partially reversed this effect of calcium, suggesting that calcium and pentobarbital may in part exert their depressant effect by a similar mechanism.

Calcium and phosphorus balance studies were performed on 13 nephrotic patients and eight patients during clinical remission of the nephrotic syndrome. Marked impairment of intestinal absorption of calcium was found among nephrotic patients, in eight of whom faecal calcium equalled or exceeded dietary calcium. Serial mineral balances have been obtained in 3 children undergoing therapy with EHDP (ethane-1-hydroxy-1, 1-diphosphonate) for diseases involving ectopic calcification. Although clinical outcome was not uniformly satisfactory, all cases showed an overall reduction in calcium balance. This was due to increased faecal excretion of calcium and was most marked after a long duration of therapy. Although these results conflict with reported experience in adults, they are in agreement with published observations of the effects of EHDP on calcium absorption in experimental animals.

Normal values for plasma calcium and magnesium levels during the first week of life, in breast- and bottle-fed babies, have been determined. It has been shown on the sixth day that plasma levels of calcium, magnesium, and protein are all significantly lower in bottle-fed babies than in breast-fed babies, while the reverse is true of the plasma inorganic phosphorus.
