OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess the degree to which health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and Medicaid managed care (MMC) plans in California have adopted the 1996 AHCPR Clinical Practice Guideline for Smoking Cessation. (AHCPR [U.S. Agency for Health Care Policy and Research] was renamed AHRQ [Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality] in 1999.)

California's Phase 2 Reformulated Gasoline (CaRFG), introduced early in 1996, represents an important step toward attainment of ozone standards. Studies of vehicle emissions and ambient air quality data have reported substantial reductions of ozone precursors due to CaRFG. In response to the 1984 St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) epidemic in the Los Angeles Basin of southern California (USA), an investigative program was initiated to evaluate the interactive components of the SLE virus transmission cycle. An epizootiologic investigation testing for the presence of tick-borne relapsing fever spirochetes in rodent and tick hosts was conducted at Eagle Lake in Lassen County, California. Six of 211 O. hermsii ticks and none of 180 rodents were polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive for Borrelia spirochetes. Sequencing of the PCR-amplified flagellin gene fragment suggests that the spirochetes from Eagle Lake represent a previously undescribed strain of Borrelia hermsii.

Following a brief history, the article presents findings from recent large-scale studies of patterns and consequences of AOD use, including a focus on trends among women and costs of the consequences of AOD use. In response to concerns about pesticide use and evidence that contaminants may accumulate in house dust, the California Department of Health Services (DHS) conducted a pilot study of pesticide contamination in rural children's home environments. House dust samples for pesticide analysis were collected from eleven homes, five of which had at least one farmworker (FW) resident. BACKGROUND: From January through March 1993, there were 54 cases of meningococcal disease in Los Angeles County, California, of which 9 occurred among men incarcerated in the county's jail system, which was 40 percent above capacity at the time. Rarely has the duration of sunlight exposure or any other weather parameter been quantitated in studies of suicide seasonality. This study assessed the relation between payment source and cesarean section use by analyzing California data on hospital deliveries. Of 461,066 deliveries in 1986, cesarean sections were performed in 24.4 percent. Women with private insurance had the highest cesarean section rates (29.1 percent). Our study of the emotional atmosphere of the homes of schizophrenic patients in southern California has replicated British findings concerning the influence of the family environment on the course of schizophrenia. Sera from 394 patients with central nervous system (CNS) infections during 1971-1982 and from 501 persons without CNS manifestations were studied. Accurate, unbiased malformation rates in twins must be obtained unselectively from population-based studies that include livebirths and stillbirths after a thorough ascertainment of cases. This type of study was conducted in Los Angeles County, California, where 28 twins with a neural tube defect (NTD) were identified.
