Liang Bua Homo floresiensis mandibles and mandibular teeth: a contribution to the comparative morphology of a new hominin species.

In 2004, a new hominin species, Homo floresiensis, was described from Late Pleistocene cave deposits at Liang Bua, Flores. H. floresiensis was remarkable for its small body-size, endocranial volume in the chimpanzee range, limb proportions and skeletal robusticity similar to Pliocene Australopithecus, and a skeletal morphology with a distinctive combination of symplesiomorphic, derived, and unique traits. Critics of H. floresiensis as a novel species have argued that the Pleistocene skeletons from Liang Bua either fall within the range of living Australomelanesians, exhibit the attributes of g

Shadow response in the blind cavefish Astyanax reveals conservation of a functional pineal eye.

The blind cavefish Astyanax mexicanus undergoes bilateral eye degeneration during embryonic development. Despite the absence of light in the cave environment, cavefish have retained a structurally intact pineal eye. We show here that contrary to visual degeneration in the bilateral eyes, the cavefish pineal eye has conserved the ability to detect light. Larvae of two different Astyanax cavefish populations and the con-specific sighted surface-dwelling form (surface fish) respond similarly to light dimming by shading the pineal eye. As a response to shading, cavefish larvae swim upward vertical

First evidence of poisonous shrews with an envenomation apparatus.

Herein, we report evidence of an envenomation apparatus (EA) in two different species of extinct "giant" shrews, Beremendia and an indeterminate soricine (Mammalia, Eulipotyphla, Soricidae), documented by very well preserved fossil specimens recovered from two Early Pleistocene cave deposits of the Sierra de Atapuerca in Burgos, Spain. The two soricine taxa from Atapuerca have evolved specialized teeth as EAs, which differ from those of recently reported mammals of the Paleocene age, being more similar to the ones described in the modern Solenodon. This discovery reveals the first instance of

Environmental conditions favoring bat infection with Histoplasma capsulatum in Mexican shelters.

Histoplasma capsulatum was isolated from gut, lung, liver, and spleen of 17 of 208 captured bats belonging to 6 different genera and species. Three of the 17 infected bats were from the State of Guerrero and 14 were from the State of Morelos. All were adult bats: 6 males (1 Pteronotus parnellii, 2 Natalus stramineus, 2 Artibeus hirsutus, and 1 Leptonycteris nivalis) and 11 females (1 Myotis californicus, 1 Mormoops megalophylla, 8 A. hirsutus, and 1 L. nivalis). High rates of bat infection with H. capsulatum were found in the monitored sites of the State of Morelos. Histoplasma infection of N.

[Pulmonary embolism of hydatic origin].

BACKGROUND: The right ventricle is an exceptional localization for hydatic cysts. There is a risk of hydatic embolism and chronic or acute cor pulmonale. CASE REPORT: A 63-year-old-man with an uneventful history was hospitalized for dry cough, exercise-induced dyspnea and bloody expectorations which had developed over the previous year. Multiple and bilateral opacities were visualized on the standard chest x-ray and the right border of the heart showed a bulge in the middle portion. Signs of right-sided hypertrophy were seen on the ECG. Imaging findings led to the diagnosis of multiple organ

Imaging features and clinical significance of perineural spread or extension of head and neck tumors.

Perineural spread of head and neck tumors is a form of metastatic disease in which tumor disseminates to noncontiguous regions along the endoneurium or perineurium. Both computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging can help detect perineural spread, although MR imaging is the modality of choice because of its multiplanar capability, its superior soft-tissue contrast, and the decreased amount of artifact from dental hardware. Perineural spread most commonly occurs in adenoid cystic carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Nerve enlargement may lead to foraminal enlargement and, ul

Survival of patients with limited small cell lung cancer in whom complete remission was obtained (a non-randomised retrospective study of 124 consecutive patients.

The aim of this study was to assess whether thoracic radiotherapy (TRT) is necessary for those patients (pts) with limited small cell lung cancer (SCLC) who obtained CR after induction chemotherapy (ChT). The analysis include retrospective material of 124 consecutive pts with limited SCLC. All pts had induction ChT (3-5 courses): 78 with CAVE (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicine, etoposide) and 46--with other regimens without etoposide. After induction ChT 55 pts were irradiated on tumor and mediastinum and in 69 the same ChT was continued for 6-8 courses or till progression. After induction ChT CR

[The normal cranial nerves in MRI. Description and visualization frequency].

In order to assess the value of MR in the depiction of intracranial nerves, we retrospectively reviewed 60 patients investigated over a period of 2 years. The aim of this study was: 1) to assess the score of MR in the detection of cranial nerves III to XII; 2) to determine accurate landmarks allowing for easy detection of those cranial nerves. Cranial nerves III, V, VII, VIII are well seen (70 to 100%), very often in both axial, sagittal and coronal sections. Nerves IX to XII are correctly studied only on axial planes [81 and 83%), but it is difficult to distinguish between the vagal nerve and

Derived immune and ancestral pigmentation alleles in a 7,000-year-old Mesolithic European.

Ancient genomic sequences have started to reveal the origin and the demographic impact of farmers from the Neolithic period spreading into Europe. The adoption of farming, stock breeding and sedentary societies during the Neolithic may have resulted in adaptive changes in genes associated with immunity and diet. However, the limited data available from earlier hunter-gatherers preclude an understanding of the selective processes associated with this crucial transition to agriculture in recent human evolution. Here we sequence an approximately 7,000-year-old Mesolithic skeleton discovered at th

The Effectiveness of Virtual Reality-Based Mindfulness Interventions for Managing Stress, Anxiety, and Depression: Protocol for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: While traditional mindfulness-based interventions demonstrate effectiveness in improving mental health outcomes, their delivery methods face significant challenges related to accessibility and engagement. Geographic barriers to trained facilitators, time constraints for in-person sessions, and participant dropout rates of 15% to 30% due to perceived monotony limit intervention reach and effectiveness. Virtual reality (VR) technology offers innovative solutions through multisensory immersion that creates presence, the subjective feeling of "being there," enhancing attention regulati

Consequences of losing metamorphosis on the evolution of opsin and phototransduction gene expression in the eyes of Brook Salamanders.

Metamorphosis can provide an opportunity for animals with complex life cycles to transition between differing environments and still maintain optimal functionality across ontogeny. The structure and function of the amphibian visual system generally remodels to overcome differences in media (water, air) and fluctuations of available light. This in turn causes a shift in the selective pressures acting on the visual system at each life stage. Few comparative studies have evaluated how metamorphosis drives the evolution and expression of visual system genes across closely related species that occu

Small mammal activities structure fine-scale soil microbial communities and coordinate rodenticide effects in the typical steppes of China.

Soil microbial community is a diverse combination of microbial species that is influenced by soil moisture, physicochemical properties, biological activities, and other factors. Brandt's vole (Lasiopodomys brandtii) is a small rodent distributed in the typical steppes of China, Mongolia, and Russia, which often causes serious pest to the local areas when its population outbreaks. Yet the impacts of rodenticides on soil microbial diversity and ecosystem functions in Brandt's vole habitats are not well-known. In this study, we compared the microbial community composition and functional genes bet

Elastic‒plastic analysis of rock surrounding a circular roadway considering plastic hardening and dilatancy characteristics.

Excavation of deep roadways induces plastic failure of the surrounding rock, resulting in roof caving and uncoordinated large deformation, which seriously threatens support safety and production efficiency. A four-stage stress‒strain model of the elastic zone‒plastic zone‒softening zone‒fracture zone of the surrounding rock in a deep roadway is established to analyze the range of the roadway fracture zone. The model considers the unified strength criterion, the nonassociated flow rule, and the influence of the intermediate principal stress and dilatancy coefficient. Based on this model, closed

The Human Remains From the MIS 6 Site of Grotta Del Poggio (Cilento, Southern Italy): A Taxonomic and Chronological Reassessment.

OBJECTIVES: Grotta del Poggio is a key site for exploring the Middle Paleolithic in southern Italy, as it contains a pivotal anthropogenic deposit, mainly attributed to MIS 6, while in the Metal Ages, the cavity was used as a burial place. Excavations in the cave's deposit led to the discovery of a human molar and a human talus. A preliminary morphological evaluation of the talus concluded that it belonged to Homo sapiens. Conversely, the molar exhibited Neanderthal-like morphology. Here, we perform a taxonomic and chronological reassessment of these human remains. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The

Do bubbles matter amid PBC for trigeminal neuralgia?

BACKGROUND: As a simple and safe alternative intervention, percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) has been gradually adopted by a growing number of neurosurgeons to treat trigeminal neuralgia. A pear-shaped opacity observed fluoroscopically, which indicates full suffusion of Meckel's cave conducting sufficient pressure against Gasserian ganglion, is believed to be the key to its success. Sometimes, a bitten pear may appear due to bubbles in the balloon but is usually ignored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the effects of the bubbles on postoperative outcomes. METHODS: Patient data

Superior hypophyseal arteries: angiographic re-discovery, comprehensive assessment, and embryologic implications.

UNLABELLED: The superior hypophyseal arteries (SHAs) are well known in anatomical and surgical literature, with a well-established role in supply of the anterior hypophysis and superjacent optic apparatus. However, due to small size and overlap with other vessels, in vivo imaging by any modality has been essentially non-existent. Advances in high resolution cone beam CT angiography (CBCTA) now enables this deficiency to be addressed. This paper presents, to the best of our knowledge, the first comprehensive in vivo imaging evaluation of the SHAs. METHODS: Twenty-five CBCTA studies of common o

The Transorbital Approach to the Internal Carotid and Middle Cerebral Arteries. A Dissection Study Toward Targeted Access Aneurysm Clipping.

BACKGROUND: The application of the transorbital (TO) approach for vascular lesions has been scarcely explored. In this anatomic study, we examine the carotid and middle cerebral arteries from the TO perspective and investigate the feasibility of vascular clipping in a pseudovascularized model. METHODS: Three fixed human cadaveric specimens (6 sides) were used for dissection. The sequential TO approach comprised 1) conventional lateral orbital craniectomy; 2) lateral orbital rim removal; and 3) anterior clinoidectomy. The clinoidal, ophthalmic, and communicating carotid segments, branches, rel
