CONTEXT: Ethnic differences have previously been reported for type 2 diabetes.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed at assessing the potential differences between Caucasian and Japanese subjects ranging from normal glucose tolerance (NGT) to impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and to type 2 diabetes.
DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study with oral glucose tolerance tests to assess β-cell function, hepatic insulin extraction, and insulin sensitivity.

In this study, a dichloromethane fraction (DCMF) from 70% Auricularia auricula-judae ethanol extract showed the highest level of antitumor activity compared to other solvent fractions (ethyl acetate, butanol, and water). In this work, we investigated the effects of Petiveria alliacea extract on the production of Th1-type and Th2-type cytokines and on NK cells activity in normal and Listeria monocytogenes infected mice. Our results demonstrated that in normal/non-infected mice P. alliacea administration led to increased levels of Interleukin-2 (IL-2). PURPOSE: Comparison of endothelial cells density in eyes after PMMA and heparin-surface-modified lenses (HSfM1) implantation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 58 patients (26 male and 32 female) aged from 36 to 89 years. In 30 patients PMMA lenses produced by Pharmacia, Storz and Alcon and in 28 HSM (Pharmacia) lenses were implanted, after ECCE.
RESULTS: Percentage loss of endothelial cells in eyes with PMMA lenses was 8.61% after month and 13.56% 6 months post-operatively. In eyes with HSM lenses endothelial cell loss was 8.44% and 13.55% respectively.

In this study we have investigated the effects of Petiveria alliacea on the hematopoietic response of mice infected with Listeria monocytogenes. Our results demonstrate a protective effect of the crude extract of P. alliacea since the survival of the treated/infected was higher than that in the infected group. We searched for nucleotide excision repair in human cell-free extracts using two assays: damage-specific incision of DNA (the nicking assay) and damage-stimulated DNA synthesis (the repair synthesis assay). HeLa cell-free extract prepared by the method of Manley et al. The toxicity of the aqueous extract of Origanum majorana was tested (5 and 10 g/kg) in albino mice. No symptoms of toxicity or mortality were observed.
