Bone cement with a modified polyphosphate network structure stimulates hard tissue regeneration.

In this study, a calcium polyphosphate cement (CpPC) consisting of basic components was investigated to assess its potential for hard tissue regeneration. The added basic components for improving the structural stability, which controlled the setting time, where the setting reaction resulted in the formation of amorphous structure with a re-constructed polyphosphate. Moreover, the characteristics were controlled by the composition, which determined the polyphosphate structure. CpPC exhibited outstanding dissolution rate compared with the common biodegradable cement, brushite cement (2.5 times)

In vitro effects of dental cements on hard and soft tissues associated with dental implants.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Dental cements for cement-retained restorations are often chosen based on clinician preference for the product's material properties, mixing process, delivery mechanism, or viscosity. The composition of dental cement may play a significant role in the proliferation or inhibition of different bacterial strains associated with peri-implant disease, and the effect of dental cements on host cellular proliferation may provide further insight into appropriate cement material selection. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the cellular host response of

[Use of pedicle percutaneous cemented screws in the management of patients with poor bone stock].

INTRODUCTION: Management of patients with poor bone stock remains difficult due to the risks of mechanical complications such as screws pullouts. At the same time, development of minimal invasive spinal techniques using a percutaneous approach is greatly adapted to these fragile patients with a reduction in operative time and complications. The aim of this study was to report our experience with cemented percutaneous screws in the management of patients with a poor bone stock. METHODS: Thirty-five patients were included in this retrospective study. In each case, a percutaneous osteosynthesis

Pre-operative digital templating in cemented hip hemiarthroplasty for neck of femur fractures.

Pre-operative digital templating allows the surgeon to foresee any anatomical anomalies which may lead to intra-operative problems, and anticipate appropriate instruments and implants required during surgery. Although its role is well-established in successful elective total hip arthroplasty, little work has been done on its use in hip hemiarthroplasty in neck of femur fractures. We describe our initial experience of digital templating in 40 consecutive patients who have undergone cemented hip hemiarthroplasty, assessing templating accuracy between templated implant sizes to actual implant siz

Assessment of ferrous chloride and Portland cement for the remediation of chromite ore processing residue.

Chromite Ore Processing Residue (COPR) is an industrial waste containing up to 7% chromium (Cr) including up to 5% hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)]. The remediation of COPR has been challenging due to the slow release of Cr(VI) from a clinker like material and thereby the incomplete detoxification of Cr(VI) by chemical reagents. The use of sulfur based reagents such as ferrous sulfate and calcium polysulfide to detoxify Cr(VI) has exasperated the swell potential of COPR upon treatment. This study investigated the use of ferrous chloride alone and in combination with Portland cement to address the

Pseudotumor associated with cemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty: an unusual presentation as a granulomatous thigh mass.

Although polyethylene wear-induced osteolysis is a common complication of hip arthroplasty, extensile osteolysis developing into a large granulomatous thigh mass at a site distant from the joint is rare. We report a case of a thigh pseudotumor 25 years after cemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty, in which x-rays revealed a radiolucent line around the stem at the proximal site only, not at the diaphysis of the femur. We initially suspected a real tumor because it had a unique appearance, as if the mass resorbed the posterior cortex of the femur, and it was located at a site distant from the proxima

Fracture prevention by prophylactic femoroplasty of the proximal femur--metallic compared with cemented augmentation.

OBJECTIVES: To compare 2 different femoral neck augmentation techniques at improving the mechanical strength of the femoral neck. METHODS: Twenty pairs of human cadaveric femora were randomly divided into 2 groups. In 1 group, the femora were augmented with a steel spiral; the other group with the cemented technique. The untreated contralateral side served as an intraindividual control. Fracture strength was evaluated using an established biomechanical testing scenario mimicking a fall on the greater trochanter (Hayes fall). RESULTS: The peak load to failure was significantly higher in the s

Surgical treatment of scoliosis in osteogenesis imperfecta with cement-augmented pedicle screw instrumentation.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: To report the early postoperative results of scoliosis surgery in osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) patients utilizing all pedicle screw constructs and present a novel cementing technique to increase pedicle screw purchase in the osteoporotic OI spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Scoliosis surgery utilizing hooks and wire systems have high complication rates in OI. Pedicle screw fixation systems have the biomechanical advantage of 3-column fixation, and cement augmentation of pedicle screws provides additional pull-out strength in the osteoporotic O

Lumbar Nerve Root Compression due to Leakage of Bone Cement after Vertebroplasty.

We experienced a 73-year-old male with lumbar nerve root compression due to leakage of bone cement after vertebroplasty. He was underwent vertebroplasty for acute osteoporotic L4 compression fracture at our hospital. After vertebroplasty, his back pain was improved but right leg pain was newly developed. Lumbar computed tomography scanning showed that bone cements were leaked along the L4 nerve root. The leaked cements around L4 nerve root were removed carefully via paraspinal muscle-splitting approach. After operation, severe right leg radiating pain was improved. We recommend proper entry po

Removal of hydroxyapatite cement from cadaveric temporal bones after transtemporal surgery.

HYPOTHESIS: To determine the best method of removing hydroxyapatite cement from the temporal bone in the postoperative period. BACKGROUND: The advent of hydroxyapatite cement in neurotologic surgery of the temporal bone has dramatically decreased the rate of postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leaks. However, there is no literature currently available on how to manage these patients in the setting of postoperative hematomas of the cerebellopontine angle. METHODS: Nine cadaveric temporal bones were obtained that had previously undergone translabyrinthine approach drilling in an academic tempora

Cement embolus trapped in the inferior vena cava filter during percutaneous vertebroplasty.

A 58-year-old female patient, diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the lung, underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty at the L4 vertebral body due to painful spinal metastases. Because of deep venous thrombosis of the left femoral and iliac veins, an inferior vena cava filter had been placed before vertebroplasty. Bone cement migrated into the venous bloodstream and then was being trapped within the previously placed filter. This case illustrates that caval filter could capture the bone cement and prevent it from migrating to the pulmonary circulation.

Biomechanical comparison of vertebral augmentation with silicone and PMMA cement and two filling grades.

PURPOSE: Vertebral augmentation with PMMA is a widely applied treatment of vertebral osteoporotic compression fractures. Subsequent fractures are a common complication, possibly due to the relatively high stiffness of PMMA in comparison with bone. Silicone as an augmentation material has biomechanical properties closer to those of bone and might, therefore, be an alternative. The study aimed to investigate the biomechanical differences, especially stiffness, of vertebral bodies with two augmentation materials and two filling grades. METHODS: Forty intact human osteoporotic vertebrae (T10-L5)

Short-keeled cemented tibial components show an increased risk for aseptic loosening.

BACKGROUND: The choice of implant design plays an important role for primary fixation of a TKA. Short-keeled tibial components allow implantation through a smaller approach with less femorotibial subluxation. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose of this study was to detect early implant failure resulting from aseptic loosening after cemented short-keeled and standard tibial baseplate implantation. METHODS: Between 2008 and 2010, a group of 160 consecutive patients (with 80 standard and with 80 short-keeled tibial trays) received cemented TKAs. At 1-year followup, patients were examined clinically
