In Japan, major and minor bimodal seasonal patterns of varicella have been observed. To investigate the underlying mechanisms of seasonality, we evaluated the effects of the school term and temperature on the incidence of varicella in Japan. We analyzed epidemiological, demographic and climate datasets of seven prefectures in Japan. We fitted a generalized linear model to the number of varicella notifications from 2000 to 2009 and quantified the transmission rates as well as the force of infection, by prefecture. To evaluate the effect of annual variation in temperature on the rate of transmis

Varicella zoster infection is one of the self-limiting viral infections during childhood and dengue fever is an endemic infection in Malaysia, which commonly occurs in the form of nonspecific febrile illness at the initial stage. It is rare for the two viral infections to occur simultaneously. A case of dengue fever without warning sign in a five-year old girl was reported, with early symptoms of fever and vesicular rashes. She was clinically diagnosed with varicella zoster infection during the first visit. Surprisingly, she remained febrile even on day six of illness despite no new vesicular

BACKGROUND: There is little information regarding peripheral facial palsy (PFP) as a complication of varicella. We describe 2 adults who developed varicella-related PFP, in 1 case as a part of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), and review all reported cases of this condition.
METHODS: MEDLINE search.
RESULTS: A total of 10 cases of isolated varicella-associated PFP have been reported. PFP was diagnosed 3 to 16 days after the onset of skin manifestations. Four (40%) patients developed bilateral PFP. Two patients had varicella meningitis; both were PCR-positive for varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in

This article posits that infection of the peripheral ganglia causes at least some cases of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), with a neurotropi … r sine herpete; that is, herpes zoster without rash. Furthermore, re-exposure to VZV in the form of chickenpox has become less common in the past few decades; without such re-exposure, immunity to VZV drops, which could explain the increased incidence of CFS. Co-infection with multiple herpesviruses is a possibility, as some CFS patients show signs of infect …

We report two children with transient myasthenia gravis preceded by viral illnesses. The first is a 5-year-old boy who developed oculobulbar weakness 2 weeks following a varicella-zoster infection. The second is a 4-year-old boy who developed facial diplegia and dysarthria several weeks following a viral pharyngitis. Myasthenia gravis was diagnosed based on the substantial decremental changes on 3 Hz repetitive motor nerve stimulation studies for the first child and on the positive edrophonium test and complete improvement in symptoms during pyridostigmine therapy for both children. In both ca

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox (varicella), becomes latent in cranial nerve and dorsal root ganglia, and can reactivate many years later to produce shingles (zoster) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Elderly and immunocompromised individuals are also at risk for complications of VZV reactivation involving the central nervous system (CNS), including myelitis, large-vessel encephalitis/granulomatous arteritis, small-vessel encephalitis, meningoencephalitis, and ventriculitis. Peripheral nervous system (PNS) complications range from zoster and postherpetic neuralgia to postinfecti…

UNLABELLED: Infection with varicella zoster virus is common in childhood and generally associated with few complications. Myopericarditis following varicella infection is rare but may result in severe rhythm disturbances and congestive cardiac failure. The case is presented of a 4-month-old infant presenting with a large pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade 2 weeks after the onset of a varicella exanthem. Although Streptococcus was noted in the pericardial fluid, it could not be grown on bacterial culture and the subsequent clinical course was in keeping with a viral myopericarditis.

1. Varicella-zoster virus is highly communicable. Non-immune adults are susceptible to infection and, if infected, have increased risk of complications. 2. Adult varicella infection poses significant economic loss for the infected employee and potentially for exposed coworkers and the employer. Health care employers also must be concerned about transmission of varicella infection to clients. 3. Varicella vaccine is now available, well tolerated, and prevents infection in approximately 94% of vaccinees. The occupational health nurse needs to consider varicella vaccination for employees suscepti

Varicella (chickenpox) is the primary infection of Varicella-Zoster virus, characterized by generalized vesicular eruption, fever and mild constitutional symptoms. Chiefly infecting children of 1 to 14 years of age, the disease has been almost neglected because of its inevitable and benign outcome. Adults are rarely infected with an incidence of less than 20%. These two cases are presented of normal adults with marked neurological complications 10 and 14 days, respectively, following typical skin eruption of varicella. The first case developed transverse myelitis and the second, an encephalomy…

Varicella in the immunocompetent adult is an infrequent but potentially serious infection. Previous studies in immunocompetent hosts and normal adults have demonstrated the value of intravenous acyclovir in the treatment of varicella-zoster virus infections. Oral acyclovir has also shown efficacy in both normal adults with zoster (shingles) and immunocompetent children with varicella. A recently completed double-blind placebo-controlled study of oral acyclovir in immunocompetent adults with uncomplicated varicella also demonstrated efficacy. Therapy within the first day reduced the time to 100

The authors deal with the case of a 6-year old girl in whom thrombocytopenia developed with haemorrhagic symptoms as a rare complication of varicella. They give a short review about the reasons and the etiology of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, and deal with the mechanism of thrombocytopenia caused by varicella.
