The role of schools in the spread of mumps among unvaccinated children: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, epidemics of vaccine preventable diseases are largely confined to an orthodox protestant minority with religious objections to vaccination. The clustering of unvaccinated children in orthodox protestant schools can foster the spread of epidemics. School closure has nevertheless not been practiced up until now. A mumps epidemic in 2007-2008 gave us an opportunity to study the role of schools in the spread of a vaccine preventable disease in a village with low vaccination coverage. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among the students in four ele

The contribution of childhood emotional abuse to teen dating violence among child protective services-involved youth.

OBJECTIVE: For child protective services (CPS) youth who may have experienced more than one form of maltreatment, the unique contribution of emotional abuse may be over-looked when other forms are more salient and more clearly outside of accepted social norms for parenting. This study considers the unique predictive value of childhood emotional abuse for understanding adolescent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology and dating violence. Further, PTSD symptomatology is assessed as an explanatory bridge in the emotional abuse-teen dating violence link. METHODS: A random sample of

Justice or Injustice: a History and Critique of the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs.

The creation of the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs ("Justice Center") was announced with great fanfare in 2013. Its goal is laudable: strengthening and standardizing "the safety net for vulnerable persons, adults and children alike, who are receiving care from New York's human service agencies and programs." Its jurisdiction is broad: covering residential and non-residential programs and provider agencies that come within the purview of six state oversight agencies, namely, the Office of Mental Health, the Office for People with Developmental Disa

Diagnostic variability of mental disorders in adolescence: A longitudinal study across transition boundary age.

BACKGROUND: Correct psychiatric diagnoses represent a prerequisite for the efficacy of treatment, especially during adolescence, a critical period for the onset of mental health disorders. Diagnoses can evolve over time, influenced by factors such as changes in symptoms, treatment effects, and comorbidities. The transition from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) presents challenges due to differences in diagnostic criteria and treatment approaches. This study explores whether and how psychiatric diagnoses change during this transition, ai

An exploratory study of the feasibility and acceptability of a digital storytelling intervention in paediatric palliative care in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families face significant psychosocial challenges. While digital storytelling is an established memory-making intervention in the U.S., its adaptation and implementation within Irish paediatric palliative care remains unexplored. PURPOSE: This exploratory study investigated the feasibility and acceptability of an adapted digital storytelling intervention, integrated with Barretstown's therapeutic recreation model, for families receiving community-based paediatric palliative care in Ireland. METHODS: Using a mult

Navigating recovery: a scoping review of comprehensive approaches to postpartum substance use care and support.

BACKGROUND: Unregulated drug use, including non-prescription opioids, is a growing public health problem in Canada and the United States, compounded by a toxic drug supply and rising overdose rates. Perinatal women, particularly in the postpartum period, face increased risks, with overdose now a leading cause of maternal mortality. Despite these risks, research has largely focused on substance use during pregnancy, with limited attention to the postpartum period. Understanding the experience of postpartum women who use unregulated drugs and/or non-prescription opioids, including their recovery

School-Based Prevention Programmes for Sexual Abuse: A Meta-Analysis Study.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) remains a significant public health concern with lasting impacts on victims' mental, emotional, and social well-being. In recent decades, school-based prevention programs have been implemented globally to increase children's knowledge, attitudes, and protective behaviors. Although previous meta-analyses have reported overall program effectiveness, there is limited synthesis regarding the influence of variables such as session count and intervention style. This study aims to provide an updated meta-analysis focused on the effectiveness of school-based CSA prevention pro

Psychosocial experiences of pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV in Ibadan, Oyo State.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy often intensifies psychological vulnerabilities in women living with HIV due to increased stressors such as health concerns, infant infection risks, and the management of special neonatal needs like prophylactic antiretroviral care. METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted in four HIV treatment centres with participant selection based on the following criteria: an Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) score of 13 or above, gestational age between 14 and 40 weeks, less than five years of antiretroviral therapy (ART) usage, and history of partner conflict. This research

Timeliness of Childhood Vaccinations Following Strengthening of the Second Year of Life (2YL) Immunization Platform and Introduction of Catch-Up Vaccination Policy in Ghana.

Strengthening routine immunization systems to successfully deliver childhood vaccines during the second year of life (2YL) is critical for vaccine-preventable disease control. In Ghana, the 18-month visit provides opportunities to deliver the second dose of the measles-rubella vaccine (MR2) and for healthcare workers to assess for and provide children with any missed vaccine doses. In 2016, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) revised its national immunization policies to include guidelines for catch-up vaccinations. This study assessed the change in the timely receipt of vaccinations per Ghana's Ex

Suicidal ideation, self-injury, aggressive behavior and substance use during intensive trauma-focused treatment with exposure-based components in adolescent and young adult PTSD patients.

BACKGROUND: Multiple traumata such as child sexual and/or physical abuse often result in complex psychopathologies and a range of associated dysfunctional behaviors. Although evidence-based interventions exist, some therapists are concerned that trauma-focused psychotherapy with exposure-based elements may lead to the deterioration of associated dysfunctional behaviors in adolescents and young adults. Therefore, we examined the course of suicidal ideation, self-injury, aggressive behavior and substance use in a group of abuse-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients during phase-b

Factors associated with male involvement in the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV, Midlands Province, Zimbabwe, 2015 - a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Uptake of and adherence to the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) interventions are a challenge to most women if there is no male partner involvement. Organizations which include the National AIDS Council and the Zimbabwe AIDS Prevention Project- University of Zimbabwe have been working towards mobilizing men for couple HIV testing and counseling (HTC) in antenatal care (ANC). In 2013, Midlands province had 19 % males who were tested together with their partners in ANC, an increase by 9 % from 2011. However, this improvement was still far below the national t

The association between parental attributions of misbehavior and parenting practices in caregivers raising children with prenatal alcohol exposure: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Limited research has focused on parenting practices used by caregivers raising children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). The current study hypothesized that parental attributions of children's misbehavior would relate to the parenting strategies caregivers utilize with children with FASD. This study also aimed to develop a coding scheme to allow quantification of these treatment-relevant constructs in future intervention trials. METHODS: Thirty-one caregivers of children with FASD (age 4-8) were interviewed with the Parenting Practices Interview (PPI), a stud

The Toronto experience in diagnosing alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder: a unique profile of deficits and assets.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), which involves the triad of features reflecting facial dysmorphology, growth retardation and intellectual impairments, encompasses a relatively small proportion of the children affected prenatally by alcohol. Unfortunately, in the absence of facial dysmorphology, the diagnosis is difficult in the majority of children, who are considered to have alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND). Because accepted clinical methods are not pathognomonic, a novel profile approach was used to examine neuropsychological abilities and disabilities to identify
