Choroidal Thickness in a Hyperopic Pediatric Population.

Aims: To evaluate the choroidal thickness (CT) in hyperopic and emmetropic children using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Methods: This was a prospective, cross-sectional comparative study. Macular choroidal thickness and axial length of 62 eyes from hyperopic pediatric patients were studied. CT was determined at nine different macular locations. The results were compared to 66 eyes of healthy pediatric patients. Results: Study groups were classified as a hyperopic group (SE ≥ 2D) and an emmetropic group (SE < 2D). The hyperopic group have shorter AL than the emmetropic gro…

[Serpiginous-Like Choroiditis: literature Review].

OBJECTIVE: To provide a complete picture and to improve understanding of the serpiginous-like choroiditis caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Literature review of serpiginous-like choroiditis. A number of scientific search engines were searched including Medline (PubMed), Scielo, and Cochrane Library. Using MeSH and DeCS terms. RESULTS: 107 articles were obtained, of which 44 met inclusion criteria. DISCUSSION: serpiginous-like choroiditis is described as its etiology, pathogenesis, ocular findings, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Mode…

Classification Criteria for Punctate Inner Choroiditis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine classification criteria for punctate inner choroiditis (PIC). DESIGN: Machine learning of cases with PIC and 8 other posterior uveitides. METHODS: Cases of posterior uveitides were collected in an informatics-designed preliminary database, and a final database was constructed of cases achieving supermajority agreement on diagnosis by using formal consensus techniques. Cases were split into a training set and a validation set. Machine learning using multinomial logistic regression was used in the training set to determine a parsimonious set …

Choroidal melanocytes: subpopulations of different origin?

BACKGROUND: The human choroid derives from the mesectoderm, except the melanocytes originating from the neuroectoderm. To date, it is unclear whether all choroidal melanocytes share the same origin or might have different origins. The purpose of this study was to screen immunohistochemically for mesenchymal elements in the adult healthy human choroid, in the malignant melanoma of the choroid, as well as in the developing human fetal choroid. METHODS: Human choroids were obtained from cornea donors and prepared as flat whole mounts for paraffin- and cryoembedding. Globes enucleated for choroid…

Choroidal vascularity index in pseudoexfoliative glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To evaluate choroidal vascular involvement in pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG) by applying the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) to optic coherence tomography (OCT) images. METHODS: Seventy-eight eyes from 40 subjects were included the study. Group 1 included healthy eyes (n = 20), group 2 eyes with PEX (n = 16), and group 3 eyes with PEXG (n = 42). OCT imaging of macular and peripapillary regions and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) analyses were performed. CVI was calculated using ImageJ software. RESULTS: The mean age was 64.89 ± 5.8, 71.2 ± 7.8, and 68.24 ± 7.4 years in groups …

Choroidal structural evaluation in celiac disease.

This observational case-control study assessed the differences in choroidal structure between patients with celiac disease and healthy subjects utilizing the choroidal vascularity index (CVI). Seventy-four celiac patients and 67 healthy subjects underwent a complete ophthalmological evaluation, axial length (AL) measurements and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography with enhanced depth imaging mode (EDI SD-OCT) evaluation. These images were binarized and choroidal vasculature was analyzed. Choroidal total subfoveal area (TSA), luminal subfoveal area (LSA), stromal subfoveal area (SSA), …

Laser-Induced Choroidal Neovascularization in Rats.

The laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) model has been widely used for research on wet age-related macular degeneration (wet-AMD) and other ocular neovascular diseases. In this model, the Bruch membrane is perforated by laser injury, resulting in neovascularization formed from the choroidal capillaries. It has become a standard method to evaluate the effect of different treatments on CNV progression in preclinical studies. This protocol can be used in various species, including rat, mouse, pig, and monkey. The rodent laser-induced CNV model is the most commonly used because of the…

Photodynamic therapy for macular choroidal osteoma.

PURPOSE: To report a case of macular choroidal osteoma treated with photodynamic therapy. OBSERVATIONS: A 34-years old woman with decreased visual acuity in her left eye came to our observation for assessment of an amelanotic choroidal tumor in the left eye. On the basis of ophthalmoscopic and echographic features the tumor was diagnosed as choroidal osteoma. Imaging examination revealed subretinal fluid involving the foveal area associated with alterations of outer neuroepithelial layers and photoreceptors without evidence of choroidal neovascularization. Foveal sparing standard fluence rate…

Two Patients with Atypical Choroidal Detachment.

Serous choroidal detachment that is caused by rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) may present a significant diagnostic challenge as delayed recognition and repair of the underlying RRD can severely impact the final anatomical and visual outcome. We report 2 consecutive patients with atypical choroidal detachments who were later found to have underlying RRDs. A 71-year-old female presented with a 1-week history of painful vision loss and floaters in the left eye. Examination revealed choroidal detachments in the nasal and temporal periphery and an overlying retinal detachment with shifting …

Subfoveal Choroidal Thickness in Pre-eclampsia.

SIGNIFICANCE: To our knowledge, this is the first time a study looking at the association between subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and the parameters affecting the severity of pre-eclampsia has been reported. We provide evidence that SFCT is thicker in pre-eclamptic (PE) patients and speculate on the possible causes. PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to compare SFCT in PE, normal pregnant, and nonpregnant women using spectral domain optical coherence tomography and to correlate SFCT with severity of pre-eclampsia. METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational study was performed. A to…

[Choroidal thickness changes in patients with diabetes].

INTRODUCTION: Swept-source optical coherence tomography is a useful non-invasive device that is used to understand better the role of choroid in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. AIM: To measure choroidal thickness in diabetic eyes and to correlate it with established systemic risk factors, the severity and the therapy of diabetic retinopathy. METHOD: Prospective cross-sectional study using swept-source optical coherence tomography has been performed. Choroidal and macular thickness maps of 117 eyes of 60 diabetic patients were compared to data from 45 eyes of 24 healthy controls. In…

[Multimodal imaging in atypical choroidal nevus].

Choroidal nevi are frequent, asymptomatic, usually easy-to-diagnose lesions. They can cause macular syndrome in patients with choridal degeneration or neovascularization. In doubtful cases, the combination of different diagnostic means, such as clinical examination, ultrasound, fluorescein angiography and indocyanine green (ICG) can help to correct the diagnosis. We here report the case of a female patient with atypical choroidal lesion, in whom multimodal imaging allowed to retain the diagnosis of achromic choroidal nevus complicated by choroidal neovascularization.
