We report a case of choroidal metastasis simulating uveal effusion syndrome. This patient with uveal metastasis from lung carcinoma presented with decreased vision in the left eye. INTRODUCTION: We report on a case with bilateral choroidal metastases derived from a renal cell carcinoma 13 years after nephrectomy. The treatment modality is discussed.

A 55-year-old man presented with a smoothly elevated solid choroidal mass with choroidal detachment in the temporal region of the left eye. Both fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography suggested a vascularized lesion such as an angioma. However, radiographic examination revealed a solid, circumscribed, dome-shaped mass. BACKGROUND: Small retinal and choroidal tumors situated near the optic nerve or macula, such as retinoblastomas and malignant melanomas, as well as various other anomalies, in particular vascular malformations, may successfully be treated by photocoagulation. Model assumptions geared towards maximizing efficiency and minimizing undesirable side effects are forwarded, and the most important parameters subserving photothermal destruction, such as radiation field and thermal energy, analyzed. We report a rare case of choroid plexus metastasis of renal cell carcinoma causing intraventricular hemorrhage. A 75-year-old female was admitted to our hospital for SAH. Preoperative examination evoked suspicion of an anterior communicating aneurysm as a cause of SAH. Fourteen cases with retinoblastoma has been histologic studied. In eleven cases of them has been observed the invasion in the neighbour structures following the tumoral mass development: four cases in the vitreous, one case in the vitreous and the choroid, sclera and the optic nerve, one case in the vitreous choroid and optic nerve, two cases in the optic nerve. The tumoral invasion in the neighbour structures was observed only at the undifferentiated retinoblastoma.

Two patients who had been given ruthenium plaque treatment for uveal melanoma were MR examined due to suspected recurrence. Spin-echo sequences were applied using a 1.5 T equipment. The examinations were performed in both patients two times with a 2-h interval. Immediately after the first examination the patients were perorally given 20 g glucose and 10 g fructose. A large number of cases of ocular melanoma have been entered in The Provincial Cancer Registry of Alberta over the past 40 years. This study was undertaken in order to describe further the natural history of this disease and derive management recommendations for use at the provincial level. Four patients underwent cataract extraction with implantation of intraocular lenses. Preoperative ultrasonography did not include a comprehensive diagnostic B-scan analysis. Postoperative examination revealed uveal melanomas. The clinical presentations as well as the histopathologic findings of the two enucleated eyes are discussed. These cases emphasize the necessity for B-scan ultrasonography prior to cataract surgery when media opacity prevents adequate visualization of the fundus.

In a review of 474 malignant melanomas of the posterior uvea the incidence of totally necrotic tumors was 3.6% and of partially necrotic, 5.7%. Longer time intervals to appearance of first symptoms and enucleation, secondary glaucoma, and inflammatory exophthalmos were significantly more frequent in necrotic malignant melanomas (P less than 0.01). Histopathological examination also revealed that necrotic tumors more often had secondary angle-closure glaucoma, rubeosis iridis, cellular inflammatory infiltrates, and extraocular extension when compared to non-necrotic tumors (P less than 0.01).

We studied a case of Sturge-Weber syndrome in a 66-year-old woman, who displayed associated angiomas of the thyroid gland and choroid plexi and leptomeningeal melanosis. These findings are discussed in light of the proposed pathogenesis of the syndrome and its relationship to the other neuroectodermal dysplasias.
