Terminal deletion of chromosome 4q is a genetic abnormality associated predominantly with cardiac abnormalities, abnormal facial features, and developmental delay. A specific clinical clue to this infrequently diagnosed disorder is hypoplasia of the terminal phalanx of the fifth finger with an abnormal nail, occasionally extending onto the volar surface. Ocular manifestations of the disorder are uncommon, but anterior segment dysgenesis and glaucoma have been described with proximal deletions of chromosome 4 with phenotypes resembling Rieger's anomaly. We present a case of 4q deletion syndrome

BACKGROUND: Pericentric inversion of Chromosome 9 is a common chromosomal abnormality, occasionally linked to clinical conditions such as ambiguous genitalia, warranting its inclusion in differential diagnoses. Sexual ambiguity is a tragic and highly distressing condition that imposes deep emotional and spiritual concerns on the family. Therefore, it is essential to adopt a rational and immediate approach, including clinical, hormonal, genetic, molecular, and radiographic investigations, to determine its cause and guide the therapeutic strategy.

Literature review provides the analysis of treatment results of implementing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) in patients with cytogenetically unfavorable acute myeloid and lymphoblastic leukemias including monosomal, complex, and hyperdiploid karyotypes, t(3;3)/inv(3), t(v;11)(v;q23), t(4;11)(q21;q23), t(9;22)(q34;q11) translocations, 17p abnormalities, and some other disorders. The major disadvantage of allo-HSCT seems to be linked to a strong chromosome-damaging effect of cytostatic drugs used in conditioning regimens which in turn is associated with additional

A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed in a DSD clinic at a tertiary service (University Hospital) to estimate the frequency of disorders of sex development (DSD) among men who seek medical care because of infertility. The sample included 84 men >20 years of age referred from 2010-2017 due to oligozoospermia or nonobstructive azoospermia of unknown etiology. Twelve cases (14%) were diagnosed as DSD, including Klinefelter Syndrome, 46,XX testicular DSD, and mild androgen insensitivity syndrome. Y chromosome microdeletions were detected in 2 patients. Among the remaining 70 cases th

Individuals carrying balanced constitutional reciprocal translocations generally have a normal phenotype, but often present reproductive disorders. The aim of our research was to analyze the meiotic process in an oligoasthenoteratospermic boar carrying an asymmetric reciprocal translocation involving chromosomes 1 and 14. Different multivalent structures (quadrivalent and trivalent plus univalent) were identified during chromosome pairing analysis. Some of these multivalents were characterized by the presence of unpaired autosomal segments with histone γH2AX accumulation sometimes associated w

A 20 year old male was initially diagnosed suffering from Primary ciliary dyskinesia with symptoms of bronchiectasis, severe frontal, maxillary and ethmoid sinus disease. At the age of 20, the patient was also diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndrome requiring Bone marrow transplant due to the advanced stage at time of presentation. Primary ciliary dyskinesia and Myelodsyplastic syndrome are both rare clinical conditions found in the general population, especially in young adults. This rare combination of disorders has never been reported in literature to the best of the author's knowledge. The

Larger imbalances on chromosome 4p in the form of deletions associated with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) and duplications of chromosome 4p have a defined clinical phenotype. The critical region for both these clinical disorders has been narrowed based on the genotype-phenotype correlations. However, cryptic rearrangements in this region have been reported infrequently. We report on a male patient with a microduplication of chromosome 4p, who presents with findings of macrocephaly, irregular iris pigmentation-heterochromia, and preserved linear growth in addition to overlapping features of tr

Disorders of gonadal development can result from chromosomal, genetic, endocrine, or structural abnormalities. The different conditions may have similar clinical features, but behavior and management will vary depending on the particular diagnosis. Disorders that appear in infancy and early childhood are often associated with ambiguous genitalia or abnormal sexual development. Distinction is made on the basis of cytogenetic, hormonal, and, when indicated, histopathologic studies. The current review groups the different abnormalities in the following categories: chromosomal and genetic disorder

We report clinical, cytogenetic, and comparative genomic hybridization findings for three siblings with an unbalanced 4q;16q translocation, minor malformations, and cognitive abnormalities, including childhood apraxia of speech, a rare, severe motor speech disorder. Breakpoint findings indicate that in addition to possible contributions from duplicated genes on chromosome 16, haploinsufficiency of one or more of 11 genes deleted in the telomeric region of the long arm of chromosome 4 is the likely cause of the speech disorder, the associated impairments in cognition and language, and the dysmo

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic etiology of a child with moderate mental retardation and multiple malformations.
METHODS: The child and his parents underwent conventional G banding karyotype analysis and single nucleotide polymorphism-based mircoarray (SNP-array) scan. A systematic review for chromosome 13q deletions was also conducted to explore the correlation between genotype and clinical phenotypes.
RESULTS: G banding karyotype of the child showed a partial deletion in the long arm of chromosome 13 described as 46,XY,del(13)(q32). SNP-array detected a deletion fragment of 11.367 Mb in

Turner syndrome occurs in 1:5000 live births (1:2,500 females) and is caused not only by X-chromosome monosomy, but also in a large degree, by the presence of a mosaicism (45,X) and/or an abnormal X or Y chromosome (deletion, isochromosome X, dicentric chromosome). Clinical features are heterogeneous and typical physical anomalies are often mild or absent. In all cases, patients are short but final height has been improved by growth hormone therapy. Ovarian failure, with variable onset depending on the chromosomal anomalies, is frequent. Others visceral diseases (bone anomalies, lymphedema, de

In this paper, the authors present the case of a 24-year-old female with ring 15 chromosome syndrome. Upon examination, the patient presented with severe mental retardation, dwarfism and microcephaly, along with other minor dysmorphic stigmata. We compared this case with three other adult female cases with this chromosomal aberration. As a result, the authors observed a somewhat dysharmonious profile between the level of mental retardation and behavioural findings in the four women, while sexual development and gonadal function seemed to be normal in all four cases.

The 3p- syndrome (terminal deletion of the short arm of chromosome 3 with breakpoint at 3p25) was found in the G-banded karyotypes from an undergrown and developmentally retarded 13-month-old girl with a distinct pattern of congenital abnormalities. Features present in the patient and characteristic of the 3p- syndrome included low birthweight, brachy-trigonocephaly, a high and narrow forehead with a prominent metopic suture, epicanthic folds, upslanting palpebral fissures, ptosis, depressed nasal bridge, anteverted nares and a small mandible. She lacked postaxial polydactyly of fingers and to

A literature survey has been conducted to estimate the incidence of breakpoints in aborters. Out of 9,012 cases that could be evaluated, about 4.0% had chromosomal abnormalities, which is significantly higher as compared to the normal population (1-0.5%). The structural anomalies were 7 times higher than numerical abnormalities. Thirty-seven percent of the rearrangements were in males while 63.0% were in females. Among all types of chromosomal aberrations, the Robertsonian types were most frequent (22.3%). However, no sex chromosomal abnormalities were found. Furthermore, the breakpoints on ea

Essential thrombocytosis is a myeloproliferative disease not known to have consistent cytogenetic abnormalities. A 46-year-old black woman with essential thrombocytosis and a Philadelphia chromosome is reported. Iron deficiency and tuberculosis were present but when effectively treated did not result in resolution of thrombocytosis. Megakaryocytic hyperplasia of bone marrow, abnormal platelet function studies and a compatible clinical state suggested the diagnosis of essential thrombocytosis. The diagnostic criteria for other myeloproliferative diseases were not met. The Philadelphia chromosom

An infant with ambiguous genitalia, uterus, tubes, and bilaterally undescended testes was found to have an unstable dicentric Yq chromosome, and 45,X/46,X,dic i(Yq)/47,X,i(Yq) i(Yq) mosaicism in lymphocytes and fibroblasts. A few other minor cell lines were found in peripheral blood lymphocytes. These findings indicate a high degree of mitotic instability in the centromere of the dicentric i(Yq) chromosome in this patient.
