Patterns of contraceptive use among young Australian women with chronic disease: findings from a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Given chronic disease is increasing among young women and unintended pregnancies among these women are associated with poor maternal and fetal outcomes, these women would benefit from effective preconception care. However, there is a lack of understanding of how these women use or don't use contraception to inform such interventions. This study examined patterns of contraceptive use among an Australian cohort of young women and investigated the influence of chronic disease on contraceptive use over time. METHODS: Using data from 15,244 young women from the Australian Longitudinal

The effect of a cryotherapy gel wrap on the microcirculation of skin affected by chronic venous disorders.

AIM: The aim of this randomized clinical trial was to investigate a cryotherapy (cooling) gel wrap applied to lower leg skin affected by chronic venous disorders to determine whether therapeutic cooling improves skin microcirculation. BACKGROUND: Chronic venous disorders are under-recognized vascular health problems that result in severe skin damage and ulcerations of the lower legs. Impaired skin microcirculation contributes to venous leg ulcer development, thus new prevention therapies should address the microcirculation to prevent venous leg ulcers. METHODS: Sixty participants (n = 30 per

Multidisciplinary Care of Alcohol-related Liver Disease and Alcohol Use Disorder: A Narrative Review for Hepatology and Addiction Clinicians.

PURPOSE: Models of integrated, multidisciplinary care are optimal in the setting of complex, chronic diseases and in the overlap of medical and mental health disease, both of which apply to alcohol-related liver disease (ALD). Alcohol use disorder (AUD) drives nearly all cases of ALD, and coexisting mental health disease is common. ALD is a complex condition with severe clinical manifestations and high mortality that can occasionally lead to liver transplantation. As a result, integrated care for ALD is an attractive proposition. The aim of this narrative review was to: (1) review the overlapp

Cross-Species Molecular Similarities Based on Omics Approaches in CKD: Toward Improved Translation From Pre-Clinical Models to Humans.

The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is very high, and it is increasing. Obviously, the care is costly. The identification of biomarkers able to predict disease progression is key for optimal patient care. Tissue, blood, and urine omics are being used to discover new biomarkers. It is challenging to compare omics in animal models with that of CKD patients. The main obstacle is the enormous genetic difference between humans and rodents. Although animal models do not fully resemble CKD, there are possibilities to combine pathologies in an attempt to be closer to the human clinical pict

Targeting zero preventable trauma readmissions.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 1-in-10 trauma patients in the United States are readmitted within 30 days of discharge, with a median hospital cost of more than $8,000 per readmission. There are national efforts to reduce readmissions in trauma care, but we do not yet understand which are potentially preventable. Our study aims to quantify the potentially preventable readmissions (PPRs) in trauma care to serve as the anchor point for ongoing efforts to curb hospital readmissions and ultimately, bring preventable readmissions to zero. METHODS: We identified inpatient hospitalizations after trauma and read

Cardiac structural and molecular alterations in rodent models of temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiac structural and molecular changes are prevalent in people with chronic epilepsy, possibly contributing to an increased risk of premature mortality. However, understanding of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms is limited. Here, we investigated the subacute and chronic changes in cardiac structure and ion channel/exchanger expression in different rodent models of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). METHODS: Two models of TLE were used: the kainic acid-induced post-status epilepticus (KASE) model in Wistar rats and the electrical self-sustained status epilepticus (SSSE) mod

Incidence and Predictors of Cardiac Arrest Among Patients Admitted to the Intensive Care Units of a Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in Central Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac arrest (CA) is a common public health problem. Worldwide, cardiac arrest ranks highly among hospitalised patients' public health concerns, particularly in low-income nations. Data on cardiac arrest in intensive care units in low-income countries are relatively scarce. Determining the incidence and predictors of cardiac arrest among ICU patients will be a very crucial and fruitful clinical practice in resource-limited areas like Ethiopia. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted by reviewing charts of 422 systematically selected patients admitted to the ICU from

Implementing a Locally Made Low-Cost Intervention for Wound and Lymphedema Care in Western Kenya.

In Western Kenya, the burden of chronic wounds and lymphedema has a significant impact on functionality and quality of life. Major barriers to provision of care include availability, affordability, and accessibility of bandages. At the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare, dermatologists and pharmacists collaborated to develop a 2-component compression bandage modeled after the Unna boot, using locally available materials, that is distributed through a revolving fund pharmacy network. In partnership with nursing, use of these bandages at a national referral hospital and a few county f
