Rosmarinic acid alleviates colitis and repairs mucus barrier damage in a gut microbiota-dependent manner.

Rosmarinic acid (RA) significantly alleviates DSS-induced colitis by repairing the damaged colonic mucus barrier and reversing gut microbiota dysbiosis. However, it remains unclear whether the gut microbiota is required for this protective effect. To address this, pseudo-germ-free mouse models and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) were used to evaluate whether the gut microbiota is required for RA to restore mucus barrier integrity and alleviate colitis. The study showed that transplanting fecal microbiota from RA-pretreated donor mice into pseudo-germ-free recipients with colitis markedl

Antidepressant-like effects of a chlorogenic acid- and cynarine-enriched fraction from Dittrichia viscosa root extract.

Dittrichia viscosa is a perennial Mediterranean plant used in traditional medicine for "calming purposes", pointing at a possible antidepressant activity of the plant. We conducted chromatographic and bioassay-guided fractionation of D. viscosa root extract to isolate a specific fraction (fraction "K") with antidepressant-like characteristics in vivo and strong antioxidant properties in vitro. A single dose of "K" reduced immobility time in the forced swim test with a mouse model possessing a depressive-like phenotype. Supercritical Antisolvent Fractionation of Antioxidant Compounds from Salvia officinalis.

The increasing interest towards greener antioxidants obtained via natural sources and more sustainable processes encourages the development of new theoretical and experimental methods in the field of those compounds. Two advanced separation methods using supercritical CO2 are applied to obtain valuable antioxidants from Salvia officinalis, and a first approximation to a QSAR model relating molecular structure with antioxidant activity is explored in order to be used, in the future, as a guide for the preselection of compounds of interest in these processes. Separation experiments through antis

A selective antibiotic for Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is on the rise. Caused by a spirochete Borreliella burgdorferi, it affects an estimated 500,000 people in the United States alone. The antibiotics currently used to treat Lyme disease are broad spectrum, damage the microbiome, and select for resistance in non-target bacteria. We therefore sought to identify a compound acting selectively against B. burgdorferi. A screen of soil micro-organisms revealed a compound highly selective against spirochetes, including B. burgdorferi. Unexpectedly, this compound was determined to be hygromycin A, a known antimicrobial produced by Streptomyc

Phenolic compounds as antioxidants to improve oxidative stability of menhaden oil-based structured lipid as butterfat analog.

Phenolic compounds, including propyl gallate, 1-o-galloylglycerol, ferulic, gallic, caffeic, rosmarinic, and carnosic acids, tocopherols, and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), were investigated as antioxidants to improve the oxidative stability of a structured lipid (SL) produced by the enzymatic acidolysis of menhaden oil with caprylic and stearic acids. SL had similar physical properties to butterfat but was more susceptible to oxidation. The above phenolic compounds were each added to SL as antioxidants. SL with 1-o-galloylglycerol, rosmarinic acid, or BHT showed the highest oxidative stabili

Regional Susceptibility to ER Stress and Protection by Salubrinal Following a Single Exposure to Deltamethrin.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a significant contributor to neurodegeneration and cognitive dysfunction. Recently, we reported that repeated exposure to the pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin caused ER stress in the hippocampus of adult mice, which was accompanied by deficits in learning (Hossain et al., 2015). Here, we investigated regional susceptibility to ER stress and the ability of salubrinal, an inhibitor of ER stress, to reduce apoptosis following a single oral administration of deltamethrin (6 mg/kg). Deltamethrin significantly increased the ER stress marker C/EBP-homologous pr

Supplemental substances derived from foods as adjunctive therapeutic agents for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and disorders.

Neurodegenerative disorders and diseases (NDDs) that are either chronically acquired or triggered by a singular detrimental event are a rapidly growing cause of disability and/or death. In recent times, there have been major advancements in our understanding of various neurodegenerative disease states that have revealed common pathologic features or mechanisms. The many mechanistic parallels discovered between various neurodegenerative diseases suggest that a single therapeutic approach may be used to treat multiple disease conditions. Of late, natural compounds and supplemental substances hav

Hypopigmentary effects of ethyl P-methoxycinnamate isolated from Kaempferia galanga.

We isolated crystals from the chloroform fraction of an ethanol extract of Kaempferia galanga and identified it as ethyl p-methoxycinnamate through nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. In the present study, we found that ethyl p-methoxycinnamate significantly decreased melanin synthesis in B16F10 murine melanoma cells stimulated with α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH). In a cell-free system, however, ethyl p-methoxycinnamate did not directly inhibit tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme of melanogenesis. Instead, it inhibited tyrosinase activity in B16F10 cells in a dose-dependent manner.

Prevention of acute cadmium toxicity by Picroliv.

The potential of Picroliv, a herbal extract against acute cadmium (Cd) intoxication, was evaluated in male rats. Biochemical and histopathological profile in rats pretreated with Picroliv (12 mg/kg, oral) followed by a single dose of Cd as cadmium chloride (CdCl2) (3 mg/kg, ip) revealed marked suppression of oxidative stress in liver and testes. The Cd-induced enhanced levels of lipid peroxidation, membrane fluidity and reduced levels of nonprotein sulphydryls and Na(+)K(+)ATPase were significantly restored to near normal by Picroliv pretreatment. In addition, the Cd-induced serum levels of gl

[Allergy to sunscreens].

Introduced in the 1930s, the sun filters (chemical screens) are very widely used as they are contained in photo-protective creams and in many other cosmetics. Allergy to sun filters seems to be rare in the general population (< 2%), but more frequent in populations which are suspected of photo-dermatosis (2 to 25%). It is composed of contact allergies, but also photo contact allergies in 45 to 85% of cases. Photo-biological exploration is comprised of application of photopatches and thus is necessary together with epidermotests. Crossed allergies, though rare, may be seen between filters, but
