Analysis and Clustering of Upper Limb Motion during the Hand Dexterity Pegboard Test using Inertial Sensor Systems.

Maintaining hand and upper limb mobility is important from the viewpoint of freedom in daily life and high performance in work. Few studies on the mobility and dexterity of the upper limb have focused on detailed hand and finger movements. Therefore, we measured the motion of the upper limbs during a general hand dexterity pegboard test using inertial sensor systems and our previous measuring method. To clarify the characteristics of each purpose of motion, we divided the peg-in-hole motion in the pegboard test into its three sections, focusing on two sections: the pinch section, and the carry

Meta-Analysis of Keratoconus Transcriptomic Data Revealed Altered RNA Editing Levels Impacting Keratin Genomic Clusters.

INTRODUCTION: Keratoconus (KC) is an ocular disorder with a multifactorial origin. Transcriptomic analyses (RNA-seq) revealed deregulations of coding (mRNA) and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in KC, suggesting that mRNA-ncRNA co-regulations can promote the onset of KC. The present study investigates the modulation of RNA editing mediated by the adenosine deaminase acting on dsRNA (ADAR) enzyme in KC. MATERIALS: The level of ADAR-mediated RNA editing in KC and healthy corneas were determined by two indexes in two different sequencing datasets. REDIportal was used to localize known editing sites, whe

Long-read sequence analysis for clustered genomic copy number aberrations revealed architectures of intricately intertwined rearrangements.

Most chromosomal aberrations revealed by chromosomal microarray testing (CMA) are simple; however, very complex chromosomal structural rearrangements can also be found. Although the mechanism of structural rearrangements has been gradually revealed, not all mechanisms have been elucidated. We analyzed the breakpoint-junctions (BJs) of two or more clustered copy number variations (CNVs) in the same chromosome arms to understand their conformation and the mechanism of complex structural rearrangements. Combining CMA with long-read whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis, we successfully determine

Environmental asbestos exposure and clustering of malignant mesothelioma in community: a spatial analysis in a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood exposure to asbestos increases the risk of developing malignant mesothelioma (MM) in residents who live near asbestos mines and asbestos product plants. The area of Casale Monferrato (Northwest Italy) was impacted by several sources of asbestos environmental pollution, due to the presence of the largest Italian asbestos cement (AC) plant. In the present study, we examined the spatial variation of MM risk in an area with high levels of asbestos pollution and secondly, and we explored the pattern of clustering. METHODS: A population-based case-control study conducted be

Comparative analysis of pulmonary nodules segmentation using multiscale residual U-Net and fuzzy C-means clustering.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary nodules have different shapes and uneven density, and some nodules adhere to blood vessels, pleura and other anatomical structures, which increase the difficulty of nodule segmentation. The purpose of this paper is to use multiscale residual U-Net to accurately segment lung nodules with complex geometric shapes, while comparing it with fuzzy C-means clustering and manual segmentation. METHOD: We selected 58 computed tomography (CT) scan images of patients with different lung nodules for image segmentation. This paper proposes an automatic segmentation algor

Identification of promoter elements in the Dolichospermum circinale AWQC131C saxitoxin gene cluster and the experimental analysis of their use for heterologous expression.

BACKGROUND: Dolichospermum circinale is a filamentous bloom-forming cyanobacterium responsible for biosynthesis of the paralytic shellfish toxins (PST), including saxitoxin. PSTs are neurotoxins and in their purified form are important analytical standards for monitoring the quality of water and seafood and biomedical research tools for studying neuronal sodium channels. More recently, PSTs have been recognised for their utility as local anaesthetics. Characterisation of the transcriptional elements within the saxitoxin (sxt) biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) is a first step towards accessing th

Obesity with radiological changes or depression was associated with worse knee outcome in general population: a cluster analysis in the Nagahama study.

BACKGROUND: In knee osteoarthritis (OA), pain is the most frequent and dominant symptom. However, which factors other than radiological changes contribute to the symptoms is unresolved. The aims of this study were to identify factors affecting knee pain from various variables with radiological changes taken into count and exploratively examine what subgroups or phenotype could be identified by cluster analysis using the identified knee pain factors. METHODS: Patients 60 years or older who underwent radiographic evaluation were included in this cross-sectional study, and those subjects who com…

Spatiotemporal and Socioeconomic Risk Factors for Dengue at the Province Level in Vietnam, 2013-2015: Clustering Analysis and Regression Model.

Dengue is a serious infectious disease threat in Vietnam, but its spatiotemporal and socioeconomic risk factors are not currently well understood at the province level across the country and on a multiannual scale. We explore spatial trends, clusters and outliers in dengue case counts at the province level from 2011-2015 and use this to extract spatiotemporal variables for regression analysis of the association between dengue case counts and selected spatiotemporal and socioeconomic variables from 2013-2015. Dengue in Vietnam follows anticipated spatial trends, with a potential two-year cycle

Profiling obesity phenotypes and trajectories in older adults of the Quebec NuAge cohort on nutrition and successful aging: A cluster analysis.

Obesity in older adults results from several interacting factors. Consequently, interventions have shown mitigated effects. We determined (a) the different subgroups of older adults with obesity based on clusters of associated comorbidities and (b) the trajectory of these clusters to assess their stability over 3 years and factors contributing to transitions. Obese men (n = 193; body mass index [BMI] = 33.15 ± 2.69 kg/m2 ) and women (n = 220; BMI = 33.71 ± 3.71 kg/m2 ) aged between 68 and 82 years were studied. Outcome variables were body composition, strength, physical capacity (PC), nutritio

Phenotypes Determined by Cluster Analysis and Their Survival in the Prospective European Scleroderma Trials and Research Cohort of Patients With Systemic Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a heterogeneous connective tissue disease that is typically subdivided into limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc) and diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc) depending on the extent of skin involvement. This subclassification may not capture the entire variability of clinical phenotypes. The European Scleroderma Trials and Research (EUSTAR) database includes data on a prospective cohort of SSc patients from 122 European referral centers. This study was undertaken to perform a cluster analysis of EUSTAR data to distinguish and characterize homogeneous phenotypes without any…

Multiomics analysis profile acute liver injury module clusters to compare the therapeutic efficacy of bifendate and muaddil sapra.

The pathogenesis of acute liver injury has been plagued by biologists and physicians. We know little about its therapeutic mechanism. Therefore, this study explored the mechanism of bifendate and muaddil sapra in the treatment of acute liver injury. Firstly, co-expression and cluster analysis of disease-related genes were carried out, and the Go function and KEGG pathway of modules and related genes were identified. Secondly, pivot analysis of modules can identify key regulators. On the other hand, based on the acute liver injury induced by CCl4, we use the combined analysis of proteomics and …

Identification of Vaccine-Altered Circulating B Cell Phenotypes Using Mass Cytometry and a Two-Step Clustering Analysis.

Broadening our understanding of the abundance and phenotype of B cell subsets that are induced or perturbed by exogenous Ags will improve the vaccine evaluation process. Mass cytometry (CyTOF) is being used to increase the number of markers that can be investigated in single cells, and therefore characterize cell phenotype at an unprecedented level. We designed a panel of CyTOF Abs to compare the B cell response in cynomolgus macaques at baseline, and 8 and 28 d after the second homologous immunization with modified vaccinia virus Ankara. The spanning-tree progression analysis of density-norma

antiSMASH: rapid identification, annotation and analysis of secondary metabolite biosynthesis gene clusters in bacterial and fungal genome sequences.

Bacterial and fungal secondary metabolism is a rich source of novel bioactive compounds with potential pharmaceutical applications as antibiotics, anti-tumor drugs or cholesterol-lowering drugs. To find new drug candidates, microbiologists are increasingly relying on sequencing genomes of a wide variety of microbes. However, rapidly and reliably pinpointing all the potential gene clusters for secondary metabolites in dozens of newly sequenced genomes has been extremely challenging, due to their biochemical heterogeneity, the presence of unknown enzymes and the dispersed nature of the necessary
