A Comprehensive Toolkit to Support Self-Report Questionnaires for Autistic Adults With Cognitive Disability.

OBJECTIVES: Autistic individuals with cognitive disability are underrepresented in research using self-report measures. This study aimed to develop a toolkit of customizable accommodations to facilitate self-report and to explore its usability through implementation with quality of life (QoL) questionnaires. METHODS: A consultation process in three rounds was conducted with 10 experts in autism and/or cognitive disability to identify accommodations. The resulting accommodations were implemented with QoL questionnaires (WHOQoL-BREF-ID, WHOQoL-DIS-ID, ASQoL). Twenty-two autistic participants wi

Comparative analyses of Alzheimer's disease blood biomarkers and cognitive domains.

INTRODUCTION: Whether Alzheimer's disease (AD) blood biomarker-cognition associations differ across cognitive domains, analytic context, and biomarker modeling strategy in population-based cohorts is unclear. METHODS: In 1,170 older adults from the Health and Retirement Study Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol, we examined cross-sectional (2016) and prospective (2016-2022) associations of blood p-tau181, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), neurofilament light (NfL), and amyloid-β42/40 with memory, executive function, language, visuospatial ability, and global cognition using individ

The differential role of language and executive functions in the relation between socioeconomic status and theory of mind in preschool and school-aged children.

This study examined the role of language and executive functions (EFs) as potential mediators of the relation between family socioeconomic status (SES) and Theory of Mind (ToM) in preschool and school-aged children. A total of 375 children aged 3 to 7 years completed assessments of ToM (false beliefs task), language abilities (vocabulary, syntax, and novel word learning), and EFs (inhibition and cognitive flexibility). Family SES was measured based on parental education and occupational status. Structural equation modeling revealed that language mediated the SES-ToM association, whereas EFs di…

Constitutive depletion of brain serotonin differentially affects rats' social and cognitive abilities.

Central serotonin appears a promising transdiagnostic marker of psychiatric disorders and a modulator of some of their key behavioral symptoms. In adult male Tph2 -/- rats, constitutively lacking central serotonin, we tested individual's cognitive, social and non-social abilities and characterized group's social organization under classical and ethological testing conditions. Using unsupervised machine learning, we identified the functions most dependent on serotonin. Although serotonin depletion did not affect cognitive performances in classical testing, in the home-cage it induced compulsive

Hypertension and obesity moderate the relationship between β-amyloid and cognitive decline in midlife.

BACKGROUND: This study tested if central obesity, hypertension, or depressive symptoms moderated the relationship between β-amyloid (Aβ) and longitudinal cognitive performance in late middle-aged adults enriched for Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. METHODS: Participants (n = 207; ages = 40-70 years; 73% parental AD) in the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention study completed 3+ neuropsychological evaluations and a [11C]PiB positron emission tomography scan or lumbar puncture. Linear mixed-effects regression models tested interactions of risk factor × Aβ × visit age on longitudinal Verb

[The OCD spectrum disorder revisited. Toward a bipolar impulsion-compulsion configuration].

The so-called obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder (OCD spectrum) is represented by a large variety of clinical entities. There are in general obsessive-compulsive disorder, trichotillomania or Gilles de la Tourette disease among the impulse control disorders, body dysmorphic disorder and hypochondriasis among the somatoform disorders. Updated overview of the OCD spectrum through a bipolar configuration with the impulsion-compulsion (I-C) spectrum, characterized by a failure to resist and control intrusive thoughts associated with repetitive behaviors that seem to be uncontrollable or requir

Neurocognitive correlates of child obsessive compulsive disorder and Tourette syndrome.

This study investigated the neurocognitive correlates of childhood OCD and TS, which are purported to share frontal-striatal dysfunction. Ne … pants showed trends towards impairments in the areas of response inhibition, divided attention, and cognitive flexibility relative to the OCD and normal control groups. Spatial attention deficits for the OCD group are partially consistent with adult OCD studies indicating deficits in spatial memory. TS findings were less robust and may be construed tentatively as sugge …

Planning and problem solving skills following focal frontal brain lesions in childhood: analysis using the Tower of London.

Problem solving skills were investigated in children with focal lesions using the Tower of London test (TOL; Shallice, 1982). The scoring procedure was elaborated from previous studies to delineate separate processes contributing to overall performance in children. Thirty-one children with focal frontal pathology, 18 children with focal pathology in other brain regions (extra-frontal), 17 children with generalized pathology and 38 healthy children participated in the study. Results suggest a distributed network for problem solving skills, particularly cognitive flexibility and goal setting ski…

Deficit of state-dependent risk attitude modulation in gambling disorder.

Gambling disorder (GD) is often considered as a problem of trait-like risk preference. However, the symptoms of GD cannot be fully understoo … hed functioning of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), which has been heavily implicated in cognitive flexibility. To our knowledge, the present study provided the first empirical evidence of a deficit of state-dependent strategy optimization in GD. Focusing on flexible control of risk attitude under quota may contribute to a better understanding of the psychop …

Selective Inhibitory Circuit Dysfunction after Chronic Frontal Lobe Contusion.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of neurologic disability; the most common deficits affect prefrontal cortex-dependent functions such as attention, working memory, social behavior, and mental flexibility. Despite this prevalence, little is known about the pathophysiology that develops in frontal cortical microcircuits after TBI. We investigated whether alterations in subtype-specific inhibitory circuits are associated with cognitive inflexibility in a mouse model of frontal lobe contusion in both male and female mice that recapitulates aberrant mental flexibility as measured by
