The left inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus subserves language semantics: a multilevel lesion study.

Consequential works in cognitive neuroscience have led to the formulation of an interactive dual-stream model of language processing: the dorsal stream may process the phonological aspects of language, whereas the ventral stream may process the semantic aspects of language. While it is well-accepted that the dorsal route is subserved by the arcuate fasciculus, the structural connectivity of the semantic ventral stream is a matter of dispute. Here we designed a longitudinal study to gain new insights into this central but controversial question. Thirty-one patients harboring a left diffuse low-…

Psychotherapy and neuroscience: towards closer integration.

The original aim of psychology was to study and understand the spirit-from the Latin spiritus, literally "breath." The limitations of scientific methods in the past favoured psychology's aloofness in terms of studying the "intangible," while medicine developed methods of examining the body (Latin corpus: essential part). Until 20 years ago, knowledge of the localization of brain functions was limited to inferences from clinical observation of brain-lesioned patients or parallel studies of primate brains. Current neuroscience, with its integrative approach, is bringing together research from mo

The fusiform face area: a cortical region specialized for the perception of faces.

Faces are among the most important visual stimuli we perceive, informing us not only about a person's identity, but also about their mood, s … pothesis falls squarely on one side of a longstanding debate in the fields of cognitive science and cognitive neuroscience concerning the extent to which the mind/brain is composed of: (i) special-purpose ('domain-specific') mechanisms, each dedicated to processing a specific kind of information (e.g. faces, according to the face-specificity hypothesis), versus (ii) gen …

Behaviour change solutions driven by cognitive insights for improving TB health care seeking among vulnerable population: an exploratory multi-state qualitative study in India.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis disproportionately affects vulnerable groups due to low health awareness and suboptimal care-seeking behaviour. Individualised person-centric approaches are scarce in India's national TB program. This study assessed the usefulness of behaviour change solutions (BCS) in improving TB case identification and treatment adherence among mining/industrial workers, migrants, tea-garden workers, tribals, and urban vulnerable. METHODS: In this qualitative study we conducted 147 in-depth interviews (IDI) with adult (78 men, 69 women) BCS beneficiaries, facilitators (auto drivers

Prefrontal cortical activation associated with prospective memory while walking around a real-world street environment.

Rostral PFC (area 10) activation is common during prospective memory (PM) tasks. But it is not clear what mental processes these activations index. Three candidate explanations from cognitive neuroscience theory are: (i) monitoring of the environment; (ii) spontaneous intention retrieval; (iii) a combination of the two. These explanations make different predictions about the temporal and spatial patterns of activation that would be seen in rostral PFC in naturalistic settings. Accordingly, we plotted functional events in PFC using portable fNIRS while people were carrying out a PM task outside…

Shedding light on imagined scents: an fNIRS feasibility study of olfactory mental imagery and semantic cueing.

Mental imagery is the ability to evoke sensory experiences without a corresponding stimulus, with established roles in memory, cognition, and behavior across multiple sensory modalities. Whilst visual and auditory imagery have been extensively characterized using neuroimaging, olfactory imagery remains comparatively understudied despite representing a particularly compelling target for investigation. Unlike other sensory systems, olfactory information projects directly to limbic structures including the amygdala and hippocampus without thalamic relay, providing a neurobiological basis for the

Tai Chi exercise and neuroplasticity: a narrative review according to neural mechanisms and clinical utilizations in brain health.

BACKGROUND: Neuroplasticity is the core process by which the brain responds to aging, learning, and injury. Reporting positive non-pharmacological intervention approaches to promote neural plasticity is a core focus of contemporary neuroscience and rehabilitation medicine. Tai Chi (TC), as a traditional Chinese physical and mental practice that deeply combines soothing body movements, breathing regulation, and spiritual focus, is increasingly attracting attention from the scientific community for its role in facilitating brain health. OBJECTIVE: Our review seeks to combine recent evidence, el

Visual-spatial processing impairment in the occipital-frontal connectivity network at early stages of Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia worldwide, but its pathophysiological phenomena are not fully elucidated. Many neurophysiological markers have been suggested to identify early cognitive impairments of AD. However, the diagnosis of this disease remains a challenge for specialists. In the present cross-sectional study, our objective was to evaluate the manifestations and mechanisms underlying visual-spatial deficits at the early stages of AD. METHODS: We combined behavioral, electroencephalography (EEG), and eye movement recordings during the performance

Electroencephalographic spectral power as a marker of cortical function and disease severity in girls with Rett syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a mutation in the X-linked MECP2 gene. Individuals with Rett syndrome typically develop normally until around 18 months of age before undergoing a developmental regression, and the disorder can lead to cognitive, motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction. Understanding the mechanism of developmental regression represents a unique challenge when viewed through a neuroscience lens. Are circuits that were previously established erased, and are new ones built to supplant old ones? One way to examine circuit-level changes is with

The dynamics of dynamic time warping in fMRI data: A method to capture inter-network stretching and shrinking via warp elasticity.

In neuroimaging research, understanding the intricate dynamics of brain networks over time is paramount for unraveling the complexities of brain function. One approach commonly used to explore the dynamic nature of brain networks is functional connectivity analysis. However, while functional connectivity offers valuable insights, it fails to consider the diverse timescales of coupling between different brain regions. This gap in understanding leaves a significant aspect of brain dynamics unexplored in neuroimaging research. We propose an innovative approach that delves into the dynamic couplin

Investigating associations between blood metabolites, later life brain imaging measures, and genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Identifying blood-based signatures of brain health and preclinical pathology may offer insights into early disease mechanisms and highlight avenues for intervention. Here, we systematically profiled associations between blood metabolites and whole-brain volume, hippocampal volume, and amyloid-β status among participants of Insight 46-the neuroscience sub-study of the National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD). We additionally explored whether key metabolites were associated with polygenic risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: Following quality control, levels of 1019 m

Innovations in the Delivery of Exposure and Response Prevention for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is an important cause of global health-related disability. In the last several decades, exposure and response prevention (EX/RP) has emerged as one of the most evidence-based treatments for adult and pediatric OCD. Recommended as a first-line treatment in practice guidelines for OCD, EX/RP, when expertly delivered, can be superior to serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) medications alone and superior to adding antipsychotic medication to augment SRI treatment response. Despite a robust evidence base, EX/RP is not widely available. Moreover, although effective, only

Voluntary Control of Epileptiform Spike-Wave Discharges in Awake Rats.

Genetically inherited absence epilepsy in humans is typically characterized by brief (seconds) spontaneous seizures, which involve spike-wave discharges (SWDs) in the EEG and interruption of consciousness and ongoing behavior. Genetic (inbred) models of this disorder in rats have been used to examine mechanisms, comorbidities, and antiabsence drugs. SWDs have also been proposed as models of complex partial seizures (CPSs) following traumatic brain injury (post-traumatic epilepsy). However, the ictal characteristics of these rat models, including SWDs and associated immobility, are also prevale

The Protocol for: Do peers enhance behavior change in group motivational interviewing? A translational clinical trial investigating brain synchrony in underage emerging adults during an fMRI hyperscanning task and association with alcohol use reductions.

UNLABELLED: US emerging adults under legal drinking age (underage emerging adults; U-EA; ages 18-19) are unlikely to seek or receive indicated health risk behavior interventions, thus it is imperative to find brief, effective interventions to reduce U-EA health risk behaviors, such as drinking. Developmental neuroscience reflects that peers hold higher neural salience during adolescence, as evidenced by differential neural response with real and/or simulated peers, even when those peers are not friends, and particularly in the context of alcohol. Peers also activate positive (prosocial) neural

A Dynamic Mutual Information Measure of Phase-Amplitude Coupling With Uncertainty Quantification.

OBJECTIVE: Phase-amplitude coupling (PAC)-in which the phase of a low-frequency rhythm modulates the amplitude of a higher-frequency oscillation-is widely observed across the brain and linked to cognition and neurological disorders including Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, and depression. Standard PAC metrics aggregate over long windows and return a single summary statistic, obscuring transient structure. We introduce a dynamic PAC framework that captures fast, sample-level fluctuations in coupling strength while supporting multi-trial estimation and uncertainty quantification. METHODS: We dev

Different association patterns of emotion regulation and heart rate variability in older and younger adults.

Several mental health conditions seen in older people are associated with impaired emotion regulation. Heart rate variability (HRV) may be an index of emotion regulation capacity, but it is unclear whether and how aging influences this association. Early neurodegenerative processes, such as Alzheimer's disease-related reduction of locus coeruleus (LC) integrity, may play a role, as LC modulates both HRV and self-regulatory networks. We pre-registered a cross-sectional study to investigate the relationship between measures of emotion regulation, HRV and LC structural MRI integrity in a lifespan
