Quality of life for families with spina bifida in Kenya.

Spina bifida (SB) affects children worldwide. Studies from developed nations have explored the impact of SB on the quality of life of children and their parents. However, there are no such studies available from developing countries. We have therefore undertaken to document the impact of the disability on the families of affected children in Kenya. A questionnaire was administered to 40 mothers and their children, who were receiving treatment for SB at our institution. The results of this study should indicate where community and governmental resources and educational efforts for the disabled

Leading through strain and satisfaction: A mixed methods study of principal well-being through the dual-factor and job demands-resources frameworks.

Guided by the job demands-resources model and dual-factor model of mental health, this study used a mixed method survey to examine principals' experiences with job demands, resources, and their compassion fatigue and satisfaction in the context of postpandemic recovery based on a survey study conducted among 247 principals in California. Quantitative and qualitative analyses on survey responses suggested that staffing shortages, the spillover effect of COVID-19, the school community's needs, and workload were identified as top stressors. Regression and path analyses demonstrated a significant

Impact of Urinary Tract and Vaginal Infections on the Physical and Emotional Well-being of Women.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a common bacterial infection that can affect various parts of the urinary system, with symptoms including frequent urination, painful urination, and lower back pain. UTIs are more common in women due to their shorter urethra, and they can lead to serious complications if left untreated. Vaginitis is an inflammation or infection of the vagina caused by factors like bacteria, fungi (Candida), or protozoa (Trichomonas). Symptoms include vaginal itching, abnormal discharge, and discomfort during urination or sexual activity. Treatment depends on the underlying caus

Good communication with adults with learning disabilities in long-term care settings: A realist review.

BACKGROUND: Good communication is vital to high-quality care for adults with learning disabilities in long-term care settings, influencing their health and well-being. Evidence on how best to support their communication needs is limited. OBJECTIVES: To develop an initial programme theory that synthesises knowledge on how communication interventions work in these settings, how they can be best designed, implemented, and evaluated, and the resources needed. METHODS: A realist review was conducted following RAMESES II standards, using seven databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, Medline, PsycINFO, Scopus,

Tell Your Story: Strengthening Scientific Engagement and Welfare Leadership among Animal Technologists.

BACKGROUND: Animal Technologists (ATs) are vital in the scientific community, offering crucial expertise in animal care, welfare, and experimental procedures. As projects become more complex, there is an increasing opportunity for ATs to engage actively in scientific projects, decision-making, and collaborative research processes. Unfortunately, many ATs may feel that their professional background is insufficient or may not consistently recognise the significant scientific value of their daily activities. These perceptions can result in missed opportunities for personal and professional growth

From assembly to action: how planning language guides execution in indigenous climate adaptation.

Indigenous Peoples of the USA are already feeling the disproportionate impacts of climate change and the challenges created to their resource-based livelihoods from effects like sea level rise, species migration and extinction, and more severe and frequent storms. In response, American Indigenous communities have initiated hundreds of adaptation actions. At the center of the Indigenous climate response are efforts to identify local climate threats and prioritize adaptation actions through careful planning. To better understand their potential, 14 tribal climate adaptation plans were reviewed t

B vitamin-mediated interactions in synthetic microbial communities.

Microbial communities drive fundamental processes across the globe, from biogeochemical cycling to human health. Yet, their complexity often obscures mechanistic understanding. Synthetic communities (SynComs) have emerged as powerful tools to distill this complexity into tractable, rationally designed systems to study community function. Metabolic interactions - competition and sharing of resources between organisms - are a frequent focus of these controlled studies. The role of B vitamin cross-feeding remains a critical frontier because B vitamins are required in trace quantities for metaboli

Personalized Lifespan Approach to Autism Assessment: A Clinical and System Framework for Developmentally Informed Assessment Across the Life-Course.

The increasing prevalence of autism has led to considerable system challenges as specialist-driven approaches have struggled to keep pace. Recent research has challenged status quo models by demonstrating that community-based pediatric clinicians can accurately diagnose autism in young children. This research provides an opportunity to further expand capacity of community systems to conduct developmentally relevant, context-specific assessments of autistic people over their lifespan. In this Commentary, we propose a personalized lifespan approach to autism assessment as a precision care and sy

Taiwan ended third COVID-19 community outbreak as forecasted.

Accurate forecasting of community outbreaks is crucial for governments to allocate healthcare resources correctly and implement suitable non-pharmaceutical interventions. Additionally, companies must address critical questions about stock and staff management. Society's key concern is when businesses and organizations can resume normal operations. Between December 31st 2019 and 2021, Taiwan experienced three separate COVID-19 community outbreaks with significant time intervals in between, suggesting that each outbreak eventually came to an end. We identified the ratio of the 7-day average of l

Jails, prisons, and the health of urban populations: a review of the impact of the correctional system on community health.

This review examined the interactions between the correctional system and the health of urban populations. Cities have more poor people, more people of color, and higher crime rates than suburban and rural areas; thus, urban populations are overrepresented in the nation's jails and prisons. As a result, US incarceration policies and programs have a disproportionate impact on urban communities, especially black and Latino ones. Health conditions that are overrepresented in incarcerated populations include substance abuse, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other infectious diseases, perpetr
