Body dysmorphic disorder in outpatients with major depression.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a distressing and impairing preoccupation with an imagined or slight defect in appearance, with depression as its most frequent comorbid condition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the rate of BDD in a cohort of consecutive outpatients with typical and atypical major depressive disorder. METHODS: Three hundred and fifty consecutive outpatient subjects with major depression who entered an antidepressant treatment study were evaluated drug-free with the SCID-P, SCID-II, a diagnostic module for BDD, and other measures. Depressed subjects wit

A spectrum for obsession and personality disorders.

Obsession was introduced by Kraepelin in 1915 and has been studied extensively since. When a person with obsession becomes physically exhausted with chronic rumination accompanied by suspicion, he or she is driven to impulsive acts, and develops a personality disorder that displays persistent abnormal activities. Obsession is related closely to depression and schizophrenia. Obsession is induced when uncertainty and instability dominates intelligence and creativity. The current social hierarchy of a strongly controlled society rejects diversity of humanity and often triggers personality disorde

Lobotomy in private practice.

In a follow-up of 43 private psychiatric patients referred for open bimedial prefrontal lobotomies between 1948 and 1970, patients were rated by personal interviews and review of medical records for symptom improvement and organic brain syndromes. Initial diagnoses were obsessive-compulsive neurotic (27), hypochondriacal neurotic (five), manic-deprresive (depressed) (one), and schizophrenic (ten). All had been severely impaired by illness intractable to extensive previous treatment. Thirty-five were found to be virtually free of symptoms that prompted operation, six had some improvement, and t

Sibling risk of anxiety disorders based on hospitalizations in Sweden.

AIMS: This study used nationwide hospital records to examine sibling risk of any type of anxiety disorder in Sweden over a 40-year period. METHODS: This study, carried out between 1 January 1968 and 31 December 2007, of the entire population of Sweden, linked information on family relationships from the nationwide Multi-Generation Register with information from the nationwide Swedish Hospital Discharge Register on first diagnosis of anxiety disorder. A total of 42,602 persons hospitalized for anxiety disorders and 2093 affected siblings were identified. Standardized incidence ratios (SIR) wer

[Psychiatric comorbidities and secondary emotional difficulties in Asperger syndrome].

People with developmental disorders frequently have psychiatric comorbidities and problematic emotional reactions and behaviors. We commonly calls these conditions "nizi-shougai (secondary difficulties)" in Japan. But there is no clear definition of "nizi-shougai", and it is impossible to distinguish "secondary difficulties" from the problems derived from Asperger syndrome itself. In this paper, I focus on psychiatric comorbidities and emotional difficulties of Asperger syndrome. Early detection and intervention for children with developmental disorders can prevent some kind of "secondary diff

In light of the DSM-5 dimensional model of personality: Borderline personality disorder at the crossroads with the bipolar spectrum.

BACKGROUND: State-of-the-art research highlights that borderline personality disorder (PD) and bipolar spectrum disorders have clinical characteristics in common, which imply uncertainty in differential diagnoses. Although there is a growing body of literature on the DSM-5 dimensional model of personality disorder, its discriminative features between these clinical samples are still understudied. In this study, we seek to identify the best set of predictors that differentiate between borderline PD and bipolar spectrum, based on pathological and normative personality traits and symptoms. Towards zebrafish models of personality disorders.

Personality disorders (PDs) are increasingly recognized and highly prevalent, yet remarkably poorly understood, diagnosed and treated mental conditions. Common PDs include antisocial, avoidant, borderline, dependent, histrionic, narcissistic, obsessive-compulsive personality, and paranoid disorders. Experimental (animal) models are a valuable tool to study various brain illnesses, including PDs. However, characterized by complex and frequently overlapping aberrant behaviors, PDs pose major challenges for their preclinical modeling. Here, we discuss the potential utility of zebrafish (Danio rer

People behind unhealthy obsession to healthy food: the personality profile of tendency to orthorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Our aim was to measure the personality profile of people with high orthorexic tendency using an assessment method which is acknowledged in the research of the classical eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: In our research, 739 participants completed a self-administered, online questionnaire consisting of two measures: Temperament and Character Inventory-56 (TCI-56) and Ortho-11-Hu. RESULTS: The orthorexia nervosa (ON) grouping variable has a significant effect on three factors of TCI: MANOVA revealed higher harm avoid

[Hypothalamic hamartoma: detailed presentation of a case].

We describe a seven year old child with a hypothalamic hamartoma. Classical symptoms of hypothalamic hamartoma include gelastic epileptic laughter, precocious puberty, aggressiveness, and progressively worsening epilepsy. After a normal first few years of life, this case presents all these symptoms except the precocious puberty. He has a markedly morbid personality disorder: he assaults strangers and relatives, bites people, spits in their faces unpredictably, is coprolalic and coprophagic, has gelastic laughter, puts pencils, erasers, and other non-comestible objects in his mouth, chews and i

Neurodevelopmental Model Explaining Associations between Sex Hormones, Personality, and Eating Pathology.

Clinical scientists have been investigating the relationships between sex hormones, personality, and eating disorders for decades. However, there is a lack of direct research that addresses whether personality mediates or moderates the relationships between sex hormones and eating pathology. Moreover, the neural mechanisms that underlie the interactive associations between these variables remain unclear. This review aims to summarize the associations between these constructs, describe a neural mechanism mediating these relationships, and offer clinical strategies for the early identification a

Relationship between social-cognitive and social-perceptual aspects of theory of mind and neurocognitive deficits, insight level and schizotypal traits in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of the current study was to investigate different aspects of theory of mind (ToM), including social-cognitive (ToM-reasoning) and social-perceptual (ToM-decoding) in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We also aimed to investigate the relationship between ToM, neurocognition and a number of clinical variables including overvalued ideas, schizotypal personality traits, level of insight, and disease severity. METHOD: Thirty-four patients who have been diagnosed with OCD according to DSM-IV and 30 healthy controls were included in the study. All participants were give

Characteristics of monozygotic twins discordant for bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: We studied monozygotic (MZ) twins who were discordant for bulimia nervosa in order to identify environmental factors that could have contributed to the expression of bulimia nervosa in only one member of these genetically identical twin pairs. METHOD: Female twin pairs from the Virginia Twin Registry were identified. One twin met DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa (excluding the frequency and duration criterion) and the co-twin either reported some symptoms of bulimia nervosa but never met full diagnostic criteria (n = 20 pairs) or reported no symptoms of bulimia nervosa (n = 1

A sociodemographic, phenomenological, and long-term follow-up study of patients with body dysmorphic disorder in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: The main characteristic of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance in a normal-appearing person or an excessive preoccupation with appearance in a person with a small physical defect. In this non-controlled study, our objective was to describe the socio-demographic, phenomenological, and long-term outcome features of a Brazilian sample of patients with BDD. METHODS: We performed a chart-review of the 166 patients who attended the Obsessions, Compulsions, and Impulsions Subprogram of the Institute of Psychiatry of the Federal Universit

Sexual dysfunction and satisfaction in obsessive compulsive disorder: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health condition recognized as one of the most serious causes of disability and impaired quality of life. In the literature, there is no review about sexual dysfunction and satisfaction in OCD. The current paper presents the protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize data (1) comparing the presence of sexual dysfunction between groups with OCD and non-clinical groups, (2) investigating prevalence of each one of the sexual dysfunctions in patients with OCD, (3) comparing risk for sexual dysfunction in

On phenomenology and classification of hoarding: a review.

OBJECTIVE: Hoarding is a behavioural abnormity characterized by the excessive collection of poorly usable objects. It is described mainly in association with obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCDs) and in geriatric populations. Yet the literature on the phenomenon is heterogeneous and the notion obviously lacks a consistent definition. This review attempts to describe the psychopathological and clinical spectrum of hoarding and may contribute to clarify its classification. METHOD: Systematic review and discussion of the literature on hoarding. RESULTS: Hoarding is a complex behavioural phenome

[Self-evaluation of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Adaptation and validation of two psychometric scales to the French version].

Reliable and valid measures of obsessive-compulsive behaviors are essential to investigation of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). With observer-rated scales, accurate self-assessment is also required in the evaluation of OCD. In a collaborative study, two psychometric instruments for self assessment of OCD were translated and adapted into a french version: The Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI). and the Lynfield Obsessional-Compulsive Questionnaire (LOCQ) with 2 scores generated for "resistance" (LOCQ-R) and "interference" (LOCQ-I). The validity and the reliability of these two

Assessing Core Affective Dimensions in OCD: Development and Validation of the Obsessive-Compulsive Core Dimensions Scale (OC-CDS).

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex condition characterized by obsessions and compulsions driven by different affective dimensions, including guilt, disgust and not just right experiences (NJREs). However, research has often examined these factors separately, without analysing their interaction. To address this gap, we developed and validated the Obsessive-Compulsive Core Dimensions Scale (OC-CDS), a self-report measure designed to simultaneously assess guilt avoidance, disgust avoidance and NJRE avoidance that drive OCD symptoms. Two studies conducted on Italian non-clinical samp
