A cluster analysis of drug use and sexual HIV risks and their correlates in a sample of African-American crack cocaine smokers with HIV infection.

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to classify a sample of HIV-seropositive African-American crack cocaine smokers into homogenou … eir HIV serostatus. An alarming finding was that a large number of participants inconsistently used condoms with HIV serodiscordant sex partners. Interventions aiming to prevent the secondary spread of HIV infection in African-American crack cocaine smokers should take this variability in account and focus on the differences.

Use of dual protection among female sex workers in Swaziland.

CONTEXT: Female sex workers are at heightened risk of both HIV infection and unwanted pregnancy. Nonbarrier modern contraceptives are highly effective at preventing pregnancy, but offer no HIV protection. A better understanding of sex workers' use of condoms and nonbarrier methods is needed to help them meet their contraceptive and STI protection needs. METHODS: A 2011 respondent-driven sampling survey collected reproductive health and contraceptive use data from 325 female sex workers in Swaziland. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to identify associations between selected ch…

Drug use and sexual behavior of indigent African American men.

A total of 108 African American men in a free lunch program with histories of drug abuse were surveyed to determine the relationships among drug use, sexual activity, AIDS prevention practices, and perceived risk of AIDS. Of the 108, 69.5 percent were homeless and only 12 percent were currently receiving drug abuse treatment. More than half of the participants had injected drugs, and 38 percent had shared needles. Among the 80 percent who were sexually active, 40 percent reported using condoms every time they had sex. Respondents in monogamous relationships tended to use condoms less frequentl…

OBJECTIVES: This study examined endorsement of HIV/AIDS conspiracy beliefs and their relations to consistent condom use and condom attitudes … ier to HIV prevention among African Americans and may represent a facet of negative attitudes about condoms among black men. Validity of a non-invasive determination of the isovolumetric bladder pressure during voiding in men with LUTS.

Invasive pressure flow analysis is the gold standard for discriminating between hypocontractile bladder muscle function and infravesical obstruction in male patients with lower urinary tract symptoms. Here a non-invasive method to determine the isovolumetric bladder pressure to judge contractility is presented. This is based on interruption of urine flow by sudden occlusion of a specially fixed condom catheter. The pressure inside the condom is recorded and used to estimate the isovolumetric bladder pressure. Combined with, for example, home uroflowmetry, this non-invasive method may overcome

The primary aim of this study was to describe patients at sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics in Cape Town, South Africa, in terms of … STD transmission, valued personal autonomy in sexual behaviour and expressed a greater need to use condoms. Males perceived STD symptoms to be more serious, had more misconceptions about the cause of STDs and also more negative beliefs and attitudes towards condom use. Knowledge of contraceptive effectiveness and method use among women in Hanoi, Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between contraceptive knowledge and type of method used. METHODS: We analyzed data from a cross-sectional study of sexually active women in Hanoi, Vietnam, not desiring pregnancy. We used linear and logistic regression to evaluate contraceptive knowledge of users of the intrauterine device (IUD), combination oral contraception (COC) and male condoms. We measured contraceptive knowledge with seven questions on relative effectiveness of methods, reversibility, covert use, contraindications and side effects. RESULTS: Respondents used IUD (n = 128), COC (n …

Substance use and other risk factors for unprotected sex: results from an event-based study of homeless youth.

This study used an event-based approach to understand condom use in a probability sample of 309 homeless youth recruited from service and street sites in Los Angeles County. Condom use was significantly less likely when hard drug use preceded sex, the relationship was serious, the partners talked about "pulling out", or sex occurred in a non-private place (and marginally less likely when heavier drinking preceded sex, or the partnership was monogamous or abusive). Condom use was significantly more likely when the youth held positive condom attitudes or were concerned about pregnancy, the partn

DEEP Model (Differences, Emotional Sensitivities, External Stressors, Communication Patterns) Versus Sexual Health Empowerment on Sexual Function and Attitude Toward Condom Use Among Women Affected with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV): A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Sexual dysfunction is a frequent consequence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), besides the possibility of anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers, emphasizing the need for interventions involving couples' relationship management that address both individual and relational determinants of sexual well-being. This randomized clinical trial compared the DEEP model, grounded in differences, emotional sensitivities, external stressors, and communication patterns, with the Sexual Health Empowerment approach in improving sexual function and condom-use attitudes and behavior among women with HPV. Safer sex strategies for women: the hierarchical model in methadone treatment clinics.

Women clients of a methadone maintenance treatment clinic were targeted for an intervention aimed to reduce unsafe sex. The hierarchical mod … ould be attributed directly to adoption of the female condom. Although some women who had used male condoms previously adopted the female condom, most of those who did so had not used the male condom previously. Since neither theoretical objection to the hierarchical model is sustained in this population, fresh weight is given to emphasizing choice of bar …

Addressing broader reproductive health needs of female sex workers through integrated family planning/ HIV prevention services: A non-randomized trial of a health-services intervention designed to improve uptake of family planning services in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Despite considerable efforts to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI) among female sex workers (FSW), othe … h they work leave FSW vulnerable to unintended pregnancy STIs/HIV. Adding non-barrier FP methods to condoms is crucial to curb unintended pregnancies and their potential adverse health, social and economic consequences. Findings also highlight the need for additional strategies beyond condoms to reduce HIV and STI risk among FSW. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clin …

Preventing HIV transmission in Chinese internal migrants: a behavioral approach.

This study is a step towards a behavioral intervention to prevent HIV transmission among Chinese internal migrants. To explore important and changeable determinants of condom use and inspect effective and feasible methods to increase condom use for the target population, we conducted a three-round web-based Delphi study among a panel of 62 experts between October 2012 and March 2013. The panelists were purposely selected using a stepwise procedure to represent topic-related areas of expertise. The response rate per round ranges from 21% to 81%. The panelists identified 19 possible determinants

Predictors of using a microbicide-like product among adolescent girls.

PURPOSE: This study examined demographic, sexual history and weekly contextual variables, and perceptions about microbicides as predictors of microbicide-like product use. METHODS: Adolescent girls (N = 208; 14-21 years) participated in a 6-month study in which they completed three face-to-face interviews and 24-weekly phone call interviews. Participants were given microbicide-like products (vaginal lubricants) and encouraged to use them with condoms when they had intercourse. RESULTS: Of the girls, 75% had had a sexual opportunity to use the product. Using multi-variable logistic regression…

Knowledge of sexual partner's HIV serostatus and the practice of safer sex among heterosexual men of African descent in London, Ontario.

Objective: Poor knowledge of sexual partners' HIV status is a major contributing factor in the heterosexual spread of HIV in Canada. In addition, the findings show that sexually active, single ACB men are less likely to use condoms. On the other hand, A …
