This study emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnosis and therapy. Modern laboratory techniques were used to scan conjunctival swabs from 287 patients with 305 red eyes between 1.1. 1985 and 1.6. 1985. 17 patients (5.9%) showed Chlamydia infection. The main bacterial organism found was Staphylococcus, mostly of a resistant strain. Allergic conjunctivitis and typical viral infections were not considered in this study. As reported in the recent literature eye infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are increasing in number.

We describe a case of keratitis caused by a new species of the hyphomycetous genus Sarcopodium, S. oculorum. The corneal ulcer developed after 5 months of treatment with corticosteroids in a Brazilian boy diagnosed with allergic conjunctivitis. Fungal hyphae and conidia were detected in corneal scrapings, and repeated cultures were positive for this fungus. The infection was resolved with natamycin and ketoconazole. Eleven antifungals were tested against this fungus, and all except flucytosine and fluconazole showed in vitro activity.

The authors present the result of an open controlled trial of the effectiveness of a new antiallergic ophthalmological preparation, Livostin, for local use, a product of Janssen-CILAG. They evaluate the results obtained in 86 patients with symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis. The preparation was followed up for four weeks, in particular the rate of onset of effect and its duration. Evidence was provided that this preparation is a highly effective local antiallergic drug with a long-term effect.

A case of acute, severe allergic conjunctivitis is reported in a biochemist who had been grinding Bandeiraea simplicifolia, the source of an anti-B lectin.
