Multilobulated popliteal cyst after a failed total knee arthroplasty.

Popliteal cyst is a rare finding after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), but when present, it might indicate a malfunction of the TKA related to generation of wear-particles, or loosening. We present a case of a multilobulated popliteal cyst developing in a patient 8 years after primary TKA. The cyst was associated with a mechanical prosthetic loosening. The primary complaint of the patient was pain in the posterior region of the knee. A two-stage procedure consisting of cyst excision at first, followed after 5 months by a revision TKA was performed. Intraoperatively, a darkish, multilobulated cy

Rathke's cleft cysts: differentiation from other cystic lesions in the pituitary fossa by use of single-shot fast spin-echo diffusion-weighted MR imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Rathke's cleft cysts are often difficult to differentiate from other sellar cystic lesions using conventional MR imaging. The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of single-shot fast spin-echo (SSFSE) diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI) in the diagnosis of a Rathke's cleft cyst. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We examined retrospectively 29 patients with a histologically verified sellar or suprasellar lesion containing a fluid component; 12 patients had a Rathke's cleft cyst, 6 patients a craniopharyngioma, 5 patients a haemorrhagic pituitary adenoma, and 6 patients a cyst

Polycystic kidney disease: huge kidneys, huge problems, huge progress.

Polycystic kidney disorders are more common than once appreciated, are contributors to significant morbidity, are potentially fatal and are costly to treat. In the past few years much progress has been made toward understanding the pathogenesis of renal cystic disorders. The dominantly inherited disorders are initiated by mutations within genes located in chromosomes 16 and 4 (ADPKD) that cause the kidneys to enlarge several-fold greater than normal. This enlargement is owing to the proliferation of epithelial cells in tubule segments, to the accumulation of fluid within the dilated tubule seg

Giant Leaking Colloid Cyst Presenting with Aseptic Meningitis: Review of the Literature and Report of a Case.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are benign third ventricle lesions that need to be diagnosed correctly because of their association with sudden death. Chemical or aseptic meningitis is a rare presentation of a colloid cyst. METHODS: We present a case of a 69-year-old man with fever, alteration of mental status, and meningismus. Microbiological examination of the cerebrospinal fluid revealed aseptic meningitis. Brain imaging revealed a third ventricular colloid cyst with hydrocephalus. RESULTS: The tumor was resected via endoscopic intervention. There were no persistent operative complications rela

Baker's Cyst with Intramuscular Extension into Vastus Medialis Muscle.

Baker's cysts are one of the most common cystic lesions around the knee joint and mainly caused by fluid distension of the gastrocnemius-semimembranous bursa that is situated along the medial side of the popliteal fossa. Typically, a Baker's cyst extends along the intermuscular planes around the knee joint and may enlarge any direction. However, it is mostly located in the inferomedial or superficial layers of the knee joint and less commonly extends laterally or proximally. Expansion of the cyst tends to respect the intermuscular planes, and Baker's cysts along the intramuscular route have be

Persistent pleural effusion after open heart surgery: giant hydatid cyst of the liver and its demonstrative images. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Approximately in 50% of the patients who have undergone coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG), pleural fluid collection occurs at the early postoperative period and resolves spontaneously. CASE REPORT: CABG was performed on a 54-year-old male. In the early postoperative period, the chest roentgenogram revealed right pleural collection. The preoperative and the postoperative hepatic function tests were nor-mal. MR scanning revealed a giant hydatid cyst at the apex of the liver. The cyst was excised through thoracotomy transphrenically and primary capitonage was applied. CONCLUSION

Chondromatosis within a meniscal cyst of the knee.

A 32-year-old man complained of left gonalgia for 2 years and noticed a soft part tumor on the lateral side of his left knee. Roentgenograms showed some small calcified shadows at the same site of the tumor. Arthroscopy revealed a lateral meniscus to be an incomplete discoid with degenerative tears. At the operation, a multilocular soft part tumor was noticed in continuity with the lateral meniscus macroscopically. Small, loose bodies and gelatinous fluid were found in the cavity of the tumor. Histologically loose bodies were chondroma and the soft part tumor was meniscal cyst. The meniscal cy

Neuroendoscopic treatment of a rapidly enlarging choroidal fissure cyst: a case report and literature review.

Choroidal fissure cysts (CFCs) are rare cystic lesions arising in the region of the choroidal fissure. Most are discovered incidentally and remain clinically silent. Rapid interval enlargement with associated mass effect is distinctly uncommon. We report an infant with a rapidly enlarging choroidal fissure cyst. A cystic lesion in the choroidal fissure was first detected on neuroimaging at 6 months of age. Follow-up imaging at 10 months demonstrated marked cyst enlargement with compression of adjacent brain tissue. The patient subsequently underwent neuroendoscopic cyst fenestration with fistu

Simultaneous resolution of arachnoid cyst and chronic subdural hematoma after middle meningeal artery embolization: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts are cerebrospinal fluid-filled spaces that are typically congenital and treated conservatively or with fenestration when symptomatic. Chronic subdural hematomas (cSDHs) can arise in the presence of arachnoid cysts due to fragile leptomeningeal vessels or veins within the cyst wall or cyst lumen, leading to bleeding and subsequent hematoma formation. Middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization is regularly used for the treatment of cSDH as an alternative to craniotomy and evacuation. OBSERVATIONS: Here, the authors present the first known report of the simultaneous r

[Deep Vein Thrombosis Due to Compression of Huge Hepatic Cyst Successfully Treated by Inferior Vena Cava Filter and Cyst Drainage].

An 88-year-old woman complained of right quadrant abdominal pain and severe edema in both legs. She had a history of pulmonary embolism one month ago. Abdomen CT showed a huge hepatic cyst compressing the intrahepatic portion of the inferior vena cava (IVC). The venogram CT showed multifocal thrombosis in the iliocaval and both lower extremity veins. Percutaneous hepatic cyst drainage was carried out. Fluid analysis presented leukocytosis, which suggested an infected hepatic cyst. To prevent secondary pulmonary thromboembolism, an IVC filter was inserted before catheter drainage for the hepati

Laparoscopic Treatment of a Retroduodenopancreatic Endometriotic Cyst Observed Postpartum.

Endometriosis occurs in 5%-10% of fertile women, usually in the pelvic region, such as the ovaries, uterine ligaments, pelvic peritoneum, and rectovaginal septum. A mesenteric endometriotic cyst is an exceptional observation and difficult to diagnose preoperatively. We report a case of a large mesenteric endometriotic cyst treated by laparoscopy. A 21-year-old Caucasian woman was admitted as an emergency to our Academic Hospital on the 30th day postpartum for abdominal pain and a palpable epigastric mass. A CT scan revealed a mass measuring 7.5 × 5.5 cm showing a fluid content, located below t

Ovarian origin of plasma and peritoneal fluid prorenin in early pregnancy and in patients with ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

Prorenin is the major product of renin gene expression in the ovary. Plasma levels of prorenin are elevated in ovarian-stimulated patients and during early pregnancy. To further elucidate the source of the elevated plasma levels of prorenin, we measured prorenin, renin activity, angiotensinogen, and steroid hormone levels in the plasma, luteal fluids (luteal cysts), ascitic fluid, and in ovarian venous samples collected from a patient with severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) and ectopic pregnancy. Prorenin/renin was also measured in plasma and in peritoneal fluid obtained during, t

Spinal cord stimulation for the treatment of chronic pelvic pain after Tarlov cyst surgery in a 66-year-old woman: A case report.

Tarlov cysts are extradural meningeal cysts with collections of cerebrospinal fluid within the nerve sheath. These cysts are uncommon but tend to present more often in women. Symptomatic Tarlov cysts can lead to a variety of neurologic symptoms and painful conditions, including chronic pelvic pain. There is no consensus regarding the best treatment for symptomatic cysts. Surgical management has high rates of complication, including chronic pain, but better long-term results for symptom and cyst resolution. We describe a patient who developed worsening pelvic pain and lumbar radiculopathy after

Choledochal cyst rupture with an intrahepatic pseudocyst mimicking hepatic mesenchymal hamartoma in an infant.

Spontaneous choledochal cyst rupture and consequent biliary peritonitis are rare in children. Here, we report a unique case of intrahepatic bile duct rupture of choledochal cyst type IV that resulted in loculated biliary peritonitis with an intrahepatic pseudocyst mimicking a hepatic mesenchymal hamartoma in a 3-month-old boy. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography can help differentiate these conditions. Regardless of the location, pseudocysts resulting from biliary peritonitis should be considered in cases of choledochal cysts with adjacent fluid collection or cystic lesions.

Management of an iris stromal cyst by fine needle aspiration with absolute alcohol irrigation and argon laser photocoagulation to induce sclerosis.

PURPOSE: To describe the management of an iris stromal cyst by fine needle aspiration and irrigation with absolute alcohol to induce cyst sclerosis. METHODS: We present the case of a 45-year-old patient with no previous history referred for a 3-month history of an iris lesion in his right eye. Examination revealed a 2.1×3mm cyst with transparent walls at the right inferonasal iris root, and a primary acquired iris stromal cyst was diagnosed. Initially, observation was recommended, but at the 2-month follow-up, growth of the lesion was observed, so fine needle aspiration and cryotherapy were p

Infected Renal Cyst: Elusive Diagnosis and Percutaneous Management.

Background: Benign renal cysts are relatively common in older adults, usually found incidentally on CT. However, an infected renal cyst is a rare complication. While a course of antibiotic therapy is generally the first-line treatment, indications for definitive operative intervention include chronic pain, recurrent urinary tract infection, hematuria, abscess formation, and/or impaired renal function. Case Presentation: A 61-year-old male urologist with no significant medical history was hospitalized at an outside facility for fever, chills, and abdominal pain. Initial diagnosis was pyelonephr

Anoctamin 1 induces calcium-activated chloride secretion and proliferation of renal cyst-forming epithelial cells.

Polycystic kidney diseases are characterized by multiple bilateral renal cysts that gradually enlarge and lead to a decline in renal function. Cyst enlargement is driven by transepithelial chloride secretion, stimulated by enhanced levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate, which activates apical cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator chloride channels. However, chloride secretion by calcium-dependent chloride channels, activated through stimulation of purinergic receptors, also has a major impact. To identify the molecular basis of calcium-dependent chloride secretion in cyst expa

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: recent advances in pathogenesis and potential therapies.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common progressive hereditary kidney disease. In 85-90% of cases, ADPKD results from a mutation in the PKD1 gene, and the other 10-15% of the cases are accounted for by mutations in PKD2. PKD1 and PKD2 encode polycystin-1 and polycystin-2. Polycystin-1 may be a receptor that controls the channel activity of polycystin-2 as part of the polycystin signaling complex. ADPKD is characterized by the progressive development of fluid-filled cysts derived from renal tubular epithelial cells that gradually compress the parenchyma and compr
