Repeated intravesical injections of platelet-rich plasma are safe and effective in the treatment of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a challenging chronic inflammatory condition affecting the urinary bladder, with limited treatment options. This study aims to assess the clinical efficacy of repeated intravesical platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for promoting urothelial regeneration and reducing inflammation in patients with IC/BPS and investigate its correlation with subjective and objective treatment-related outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four monthly intravesical PRP injections were given to 98 patients with non-Hunner-type IC/BPS. Treatment outco

The Efficacy and Safety of a Human Perirenal Adipose Tissue-Derived Stromal Vascular Fraction in an Interstitial Cystitis Rat Model.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic and intractable disease that can severely deteriorate patients' quality of life. Recently, stem cell therapy has been introduced as a promising alternative treatment for IC in animal models. We aimed to verify the efficacy and safety of the human perirenal adipose tissue-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) in an IC rat model. METHODS: From eight-week-old female rats, an IC rat model was established by subcutaneous injection of 200 μg of uroplakin3A. The SVF was injected into the bladder submucosal layer of IC rats, and pain scale analysi

[S2K guideline on the diagnosis and treatment of interstitial cystitis (IC/BPS) : Discussion of the current guideline using a case study].

IC/BPS is a chronic progressive disorder that is often difficult and unsatisfactory for the person affected and the treating therapist. Treatment should therefore be comprehensive, interdisciplinary, multimodal and take into account the biopsychosocial model. The guideline forms a thread through the diverse diagnostic and therapeutic options and provides extensive background information on the definition, epidemiology and aetiopathogenesis of this rare disease. However, practice and theory/guideline are different. Adaptation to the individual case is therefore necessary and explicitly desired.

Relationship between the frequency of electrocautery of Hunner lesions and changes in bladder capacity in patients with Hunner type interstitial cystitis.

Electrocautery is a promising treatment option for patients with Hunner type interstitial cystitis (HIC), but frequently requires multiple sessions due to recurrence of the lesions. In the present study, we assessed the relationship between the frequency of electrocautery of Hunner lesions and changes in maximum bladder capacity (MBC) at hydrodistension in a large cohort of 118 HIC patients. Three mixed-effect linear regression analyses were conducted for MBC against (1) the number of sessions; (2) the number of sessions and the time between each session and the first session; and (3) other re

Risk of Autoimmune Diseases in Patients With Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome: A Nationwide Population-Based Study in Taiwan.

Objective: The association between autoimmune diseases (ADs) and interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) has long been investigated. However, the lack of comprehensive descriptions of patients in the literature has made comparison and evaluation impossible. We aim to investigate the risk of systemic ADs in patients with IC/BPS in Taiwan using a population-based administrative database. Methods: This study evaluated 1,095 patients newly diagnosed with IC/BPS between 2000 and 2013, using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. These patients were randomly mat

Clinical characterization of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome in women based on the presence or absence of Hunner lesions and glomerulations.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical characteristics of three groups of female patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) classified according to the presence or absence of Hunner lesions (HL) and glomerulations. METHODS: The clinical records of 100 female patients with IC/BPS who underwent their first bladder hydrodistension at our institution were retrospectively reviewed. They were divided into patients having (HL-IC; n = 57) or lacking (BPS; n = 43) HL. BPS patients were further classified as those with (29) and without (14) glomerulations. Among these three subtype

Bladder Hydrodistention Does Not Result in a Significant Change in Bladder Capacity for Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome Patients.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of multiple (2 or more) bladder hydrodistentions (HODs) on anesthetic bladder capacity (BC) in a large cohort of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) patients. Urinary HOD under anesthesia is a third line therapeutic approach used to treat patients with IC/BPS. There is some concern that performing multiple therapeutic HODs may be contraindicated due to the potential for contributing to a diminished BC over time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of IC/BPS patients from a single institution who had undergone 2 or more b

Long noncoding RNA (MEG3) in urinal exosomes functions as a biomarker for the diagnosis of Hunner-type interstitial cystitis (HIC).

BACKGROUND: Toll-like receptor-7 (TLR7) is functionally involved in the pathogenesis of Hunner-type interstitial cystitis (HIC). In addition, maternally expressed gene 3 (MEG3) is implicated in many urethral diseases. In this study, we aimed to verify the hypothesis that exosomal MEG3 in urine can be used as a novel diagnostic biomarker for HIC. METHODS: Electron microscopy was utilized to observe the distribution of urinary exosomes between the case group and the control group. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was utilized to compare the diagnostic values of MEG3 and miR-19a-3p. Co

Repeated intravesical injections of platelet-rich plasma are effective in the treatment of interstitial cystitis: a case control pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Interstitial cystitis (IC), also known as bladder pain syndrome (BPS), is a debilitating chronic disease. There are few treatment options for IC/BPS refractory to current medical therapy. This study investigated the clinical efficacy of intravesical injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in IC/BPS. METHODS: Fifteen patients with IC/BPS received 4 intravesical injections, at 1-monthly intervals, of 12 mL PRP extracted from 50 mL of the patient's whole blood, followed by cystoscopic hydrodistention. The primary endpoint was the change in O'Leary-Sant symptom (OSS) index from baseli

Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome: the influence of modern diagnostic criteria on epidemiology and on Internet search activity by the public.

Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) is a chronic debilitating condition that is characterised by suprapubic pain and urinary symptoms such as urgency, nocturia and urinary frequency. The prevalence of the condition is increasing due to more inclusive diagnostic criteria. Herein, we review the evolving epidemiology of IC/PBS and investigate health seeking behaviour for the condition through Internet search activity. Study selection was performed in accordance with PRISMA. In addition, global search trends for the terms 'Interstitial Cystitis' and 'Painful Bladder Syndrome' f
