Dehydration from fluid loss secondary to glycosuria is the central pathogenesis of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Decreased oral intake and increased insensible water loss are also common in DKA. Severe dehydration should lead to hypovolemia and hypotension. We present a case of DKA with severe dehydration and hypertension in contrast to expected hypotension. The aim of this article was to increase awareness that pediatric DKA could present with hypertension, and this should be looked at and included in DKA management protocols.

PURPOSE: To determine the maximum extent of corneal thinning induced solely by dehydration and to establish the threshold at which corneal lysis begins, thereby refining therapeutic indications, with the aim of improving clinical management.
METHODS: Dehydration was induced in 28 corneas, after 4 ex vivo experimental models. Corneal thickness was regularly measured using swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT). This study investigated non-volatile metabolites in laver (Neopyropia yezoensis) roasted under different temperature/time conditions. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry-based metabolomics identified 69 metabolites, including mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and their dehydrated derivatives. Intravenous fluid therapy is often the only effective treatment of severely dehydrated calves. In farm animal practice, application of IV fluid therapy is still comparatively rare. A protocol for treatment of dehydration and acidosis in the field is described, along with the rationale behind each fluid used. Even without the support of sophisticated laboratory analysis, an estimated 50% of calves that are expected to die of dehydration recover after IV fluid therapy is given.
