Snowpack variations in cold regions exert profound influences on the ecological functioning of constructed wetlands (CWs), particularly with respect to GHG emissions and nutrient removal. However, the underlying mechanisms have yet to be clarified. This study established pilot-scale vertical subsurface flow CWs in Northeast China, with Phragmites australis and Iris sibirica, and applied doubled snowpack (DS) and natural snow cover (CK) during winter. DS created highly moist, strongly reducing, and alkaline conditions during the dormant period, significantly inhibiting microbial aerobic respira

Nitrogen removal is crucial for global wastewater recycling and reuse. Anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) is a revolutionary wastewater treatment technology, offering sustainable and cost-effective nitrogen removal solutions. However, the generation of 11 % nitrate (NO3-) as a byproduct remains a critical bottleneck, as it limits nitrogen-removal efficiency and requires external electron donors for further denitrification. To overcome this limitation, we propose an innovative integration of a green electrocatalytic reduction system, featuring a copper mesh-embedded membrane cathode, into th

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from soils are a significant environmental concern due to their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Biochar has been considered as a promising soil amendment for its potential to influence soil processes. Iron modification of biochar has been extensively discussed for its ability to enhance adsorption of pollutants, yet its impact on mitigating soil N2O emissions remains poorly understood. In the present study, corn straw (CB) and wood (WB) biochars were treated with FeSO4/FeCl3 (SCB and SWB) and Fe(NO3)3 (NCB and NWB). The effects of these biochars on soil

The influence of macroalgae cultivation on aquaculture carbon sinks is significant, with microbial carbon (C) pumps contributing to a stable inert dissolved carbon pool in this context. Concurrently, dissolved organic matter (DOM) exchange at the marine sediment-water interface profoundly affects global ecosystem element cycling. However, the interactions between DOM and bacterial communities at the sediment-water interface in kelp cultivation areas, especially regarding microbial function prediction, have not been fully explored. This study analyzed the DOM characteristics, environmental fact

Cryoconite holes (water and sediment-filled depressions), found on glacier surfaces worldwide, serve as reservoirs of microbes, carbon, trace elements, and nutrients, transferring these components downstream via glacier hydrological networks. Through targeted amplicon sequencing of carbon and nitrogen cycling genes, coupled with functional inference-based methods, we explore the functional diversity of these mini-ecosystems within Antarctica and the Himalayas. These regions showcase distinct environmental gradients and experience varying rates of environmental change influenced by global clima

The increased demand for rare earth resources has led to an increase in the development of rare earth mines (REMs). However, the production of high-concentration leaching agents (SO4 2-) and heavy metals as a result of rare earth mining has increased, necessitating the removal of contaminants. Here, a series of experiments with different remediation measures, including control (CK), sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) alone (M), chemicals (Ca(OH)2, 1.5 g/kg) plus SRB (CM-L), chemicals (Ca(OH)2, 3.0 g/kg) plus SRB (CM-M), and chemicals (Ca(OH)2, 4.5 g/kg) plus SRB (CM-H), were conducted to investig

The unprecedented global increase in the anthropogenic-derived nitrogen (N) input may have profound effects on phosphorus (P) dynamics and may potentially lead to enhanced eutrophication as demonstrated in short-term mesocosm experiments. However, the role of N-influenced P release is less well studied in large-scale ecosystems. To gain more insight into ecosystem effects, we conducted a five-year large-scale experiment in ten ponds (700-1000 m2 each) with two types of sediments and five targeted total N concentrations (TN) by adding NH4Cl fertilizer (0.5, 1, 5, 10, and 25 mg N L-1). The resul

Coastal wetlands intercept significant amounts of nitrogen (N) from watersheds, especially when surrounding land cover is dominated by agriculture and urban development. Through plant uptake, soil immobilization, and denitrification, wetlands can remove excess N from flow-through water sources and mitigate eutrophication of connected aquatic ecosystems. Excess N can also change plant community composition in wetlands, including communities threatened by invasive species. Understanding how variable hydrology and N loading impact wetland N removal and community composition can help attain desire

The effect of low temperatures on abiotic and biotic nitrate (NO3-) reduction by zero-valent iron (ZVI) were examined at temperatures below 25 °C. The extent and rate of nitrate removal in batch ZVI reactors were determined in the presence and absence of microorganisms at 3.5, 10, 17, and 25 °C. Under anoxic conditions, NO3- reduction rates in both ZVI-only and ZVI-cell reactors declined as temperature decreased. In ZVI-only reactor, 62% and 17% of initial nitrate concentration were reduced in 6 days at 25 and 3.5 °C, respectively. The reduced nitrate was completely recovered as ammonium ions

Recently, we determined that BioR, the GntR family of transcription factor, acts as a repressor for biotin metabolism exclusively distributed in certain species of α-proteobacteria, including the zoonotic agent Brucella melitensis and the plant pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens. However, the scenario is unusual in Paracoccus denitrificans, another closely related member of the same phylum α-proteobacteria featuring with denitrification. Not only does it encode two BioR homologs Pden_1431 and Pden_2922 (designated as BioR1 and BioR2, respectively), but also has six predictive BioR-recognizable

This study integrated metagenomic and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic approaches to investigate microbial metabolic potential for organic matter decomposition and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) acquisition in soils of an ombrotrophic peatland in the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF), Minnesota, USA. This analysis revealed vertical stratification in key enzymatic pathways and taxa containing these pathways. Metagenomic analyses revealed that genes encoding laccases and dioxygenases, involved in aromatic compound degradation, declined in relative abundance with depth, while the r

NOx, a significant portion of fossil fuel flue gases, are among the most serious environmental issues in the world and must be removed in an additional costly gas treatment step. This study evaluated the growth of the green alga Chlorella sp. C2 under a nitrite-simulated NOx environment and the removal rates of actual flue gas fixed salts (FGFSs) from Sinopec's Shijiazhuang refinery along with lipid production. The results showed that nitrite levels lower than 176.5 mM had no significant adverse effects on the cell growth and photosynthesis of Chlorella sp. C2, demonstrating that this green al

Soil microbial functional potential is crucial to maintaining forest productivity and ecosystem functions. However, how microbially mediated soil nutrient cycling responds to environmental changes, particularly those caused by variations in elevation, remains poorly understood. Using the natural temperature gradient in a temperate mountain forest, this study investigated the differences in functional microbial groups and functional genes involved in soil carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling along the elevation gradient, and analyzed the associations between environmental factors and these d

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), particularly hydrophilic DON, is usually more effective than dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in stimulating phytoplankton growth and increases the risk of eutrophication in receiving waterbodies. Proteins, amino acids, and nucleic acids, which are the main sources of DON in the effluent, are produced during the hydrolysis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in activated sludge. Herein, a yeast strain Candida tropicalis O2, which was highly efficient in degrading DON in EPS was screened. Within 48-h b

The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to the large-scale usage of chlorinated disinfectants in cities. Disinfectants and disinfection by-products (DBPs) enter rivers through urban drainage and surface runoff. We investigated the variations in residual chlorine, DBPs, and different aquatic organisms in the Hanjiang, Fuhe, and Qinglinghe Rivers in Wuhan during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sampling sites were from the wastewater treatment plant outlets to the downstream drinking water treatment plant intakes. Total residual chlorine and DBPs (dichloromethane and trichloromethane) detected in the river w

The synergy of Tubifex tubifex (T. tubifex) and mussels on SFCWs (named SFCW-MT) performance was well studied in laboratory throughout a year. The SFCW-MT were steady operated with high TN and TP treatment, with the removal efficiencies of 37.85 ± 5.22% and 39.26 ± 5.20% even in winter. The mussels had excellent NH4-N removal efficiency, and avoid the shortage of NH4-N removal with T. tubifex in winter. Simultaneously, the SFCW-MT improved the NO3-N treatment by 51% than that in control group. The plant growth was improved in SFCW-MT, which reflected in the improvement of total chlorophyll con

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) can be point-sources of nutrients, organic matter, anthropogenic contaminants, and microbes to lotic environments, and the input of WWTP effluent can alter the activity and composition of stream microbial assemblages in the benthos and water column. Within the stream benthos, fine particulate matter (FPM) supports especially high levels of microbial activity, but the effect of WWTP effluents on the microbial communities specifically associated with benthic FPM in rivers has not been studied. The present work sought to address this knowledge gap by analyzing

The human oral microbiome is a diverse ecosystem in which bacterial species have evolved to occupy specific niches within the oral cavity. The Neisseriaceae family, which includes human oral species in the genera Neisseria, Eikenella, Kingella, and Simonsiella, plays a significant role in both commensal and pathogenic relationships. In this study, we investigate the distribution and functional adaptations of Neisseriaceae species across oral habitats, focusing on their site tropisms and ecological roles. We employed a metapangenomic approach in which a curated set of reference genomes represen

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 on the bacterial community and nitrogen metabolism genes in the aerobic composting of pig manure. The experimental treatments were set up as control (C), 1% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 2% MgSO4 (CaPM1), and 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 3% MgSO4 (CaPM2), which were used at the end of composting for potting trials. The results showed that Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 played an excellent role in retaining nitrogen and increasing the alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK) contents of the composts. Adding Ca

Marine phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria share a very close but usually changeable relationship. However, the ultimate fate of their unstable relationship on a long-term scale is unclear. Here, the relationship between Synechococcus and heterotrophic bacterial communities underwent a dramatic shift from antagonism to commensalism and eventually to mutualism during long-term cocultivation. The relationship change is attributed to the different (even opposite) effects of diverse bacterial members on Synechococcus and the ratio of beneficial to harmful bacteria. Different bacterial members
