"I'll Continue If I Have a Positive Mind": Identifying the Ways in Which Depression and PTSD Impact PrEP Adherence Among PrEP-Experienced Pregnant and Postpartum Women in Cape Town, South Africa.

Pregnant and postpartum people (PPPs) face heightened risk for HIV acquisition, yet depression and trauma-related symptoms can undermine adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). To inform the development of a brief mental health-focused adherence intervention, we explored the impacts of depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms on PrEP use among PPPs in Cape Town, South Africa. Twenty-eight PPPs with elevated symptoms of depression and/or PTSD and recent PrEP adherence challenges completed qualitative interviews. Six antenatal providers were also interviewed. Thematic a

Longitudinal relationships between maternal depressive symptoms, perceived social support, and sleep problems across mid-pregnancy to 6 weeks postpartum: A cross-lagged panel network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal depressive symptoms, sleep problems, and social support are interrelated during the perinatal period, but their temporal and symptom-level interactions remain poorly understood. This study examined the longitudinal interrelationships among these three domains from pregnancy to postpartum. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 3376 women was assessed at 24 gestational weeks (T1), 32 gestational weeks (T2), 1 week postpartum (T3), and 6 weeks postpartum (T4). Depressive symptoms were measured with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), sleep quality with the Pittsburgh

Reciprocal Influence of Depressive Symptoms Between Mothers and Fathers During the First Postpartum Year: A Comparison Among Full-Term, Very Low, and Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants.

Background: Perinatal depression (PND) in mothers and fathers of very low and extremely low birth weight (VLBW and ELBW) infants has not been studied extensively. In particular, no studies investigated the reciprocal influence of depressive symptoms during the first 12 months postpartum. This study aimed at exploring the impact of the severity of prematurity on maternal and paternal PND during the first postpartum year; specifically, we used an Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) to test the interdependence of both partners on depressive symptoms. Methods: A total of 177 mothers and 177

Screening for depression in women during pregnancy or the first year postpartum and in the general adult population: a protocol for two systematic reviews to update a guideline of the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care.

BACKGROUND: In 2018, the World Health Organization reported that depression is the most common cause of disability worldwide, with over 300 million people currently living with depression. Depression affects an individual's physical health and well-being, impacts psychosocial functioning, and has specific negative short- and long-term effects on maternal health, child health, developmental trajectories, and family health. The aim of these reviews is to identify evidence on the benefits and harms of screening for depression in the general adult population and in pregnant and postpartum women.

Empowering moms: Supervised HIIT vs. self-performed moderate intensity physical activity during pregnancy and the battle against depression and poor mental health in the postpartum period - The follow-up of a randomized controlled trial.

This study assessed the impact of prenatal High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and educational (EDU) interventions on depression symptoms, psychological well-being, and health among postpartum women. Fifty-three Caucasian women in uncomplicated singleton pregnancies were divided into HIIT (n = 34) and EDU (n = 19) groups. Depression symptoms were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Psychological well-being and mental and physical health were assessed using the Flourishing Scale and SF-12 at three time points: before and after an 8-week int

Outcomes of the ROSE Sustainment (ROSES) Study, a sequential multiple assignment randomized implementation trial to determine the minimum necessary intervention to sustain a postpartum depression prevention program in agencies serving low-income pregnant people.

BACKGROUND: This Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trial (SMART) was conducted to determine minimum implementation support needed for agencies serving pregnant people on public assistance to adopt and sustain the ROSE (Reach Out, Stay Strong, Essentials for mothers of newborns) postpartum depression (PPD) prevention program. METHODS: Enrolled prenatal agencies (N=98) received thorough initial implementation support (initial training + written sustainment planning). Agencies were identified as at risk for non-sustainment within the first 15 months (N=56) were randomized to: (1) no addi

Serial Multiple Mediation of the Marital Satisfaction and Parenting Competence in the Relationship Between Postpartum Depression and Parent-Infant Attachment in First-Time Parents With Low- and High-Risk Pregnancy Experiences: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Little is known regarding the effects of postpartum depression on parent-infant attachment in high-risk parents. Based on Mercer's theory of becoming a mother, this study aimed to (1) examine the mediating effects of marital satisfaction and parenting competence in the relationship between postpartum depression and parent-infant attachment using a serial mediation model in first-time parent couples during the first 6 months postpartum, and (2) compare the serial mediation models between parents who had experienced low-risk and high-risk pregnancies. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 19

Relationship between pre-pregnancy body mass index and postpartum depression, and the mediation effects of cesarean delivery, low birth weight, child anomaly, and breastfeeding: a prospective birth cohort in the Japan environment and children's study.

BACKGROUND: Whereas underweight and obesity have been reported as risk factors for postpartum depression (PD), in Japan, younger women tend to express a stronger preference to have a lower body mass index (BMI). In this study, we aimed to examine the association between pre-pregnancy BMI categories and PD among Japanese pregnant women, and conducted an exploratory analysis of the mediating roles of adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: This prospective study included 91,640 pregnant women from the Japan Environment and Children Study. Pre-pregnancy BMI was classified into seven categories: ≤ 16.9

Postpartum mood disorders.

Depression is a common disorder in women of childbearing age. Many women experience depressive symptoms during the postpartum period, ranging from mild postpartum blues to significant mood disorders such as postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. The 'baby blues' are extremely common, affecting 30-75% of new mothers. This form of postpartum mood change is self-limited and requires no specific treatment other than education and support. While less common, occurring in 10-15% of births, postpartum depression has the potential for significant impact on both the health of the mother and ba

UNDERSTANDING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN ATTACHMENT TRAUMA AND MATERNAL SELF-EFFICACY IN DEPRESSED MOTHERS.

Maternal self-efficacy predicts sensitive and responsive caregiving. Low maternal self-efficacy is associated with a higher incidence of postpartum depression. Maternal self-efficacy and postpartum depression can both be buffered by social support. Maternal self-efficacy and postpartum depression have both been linked independently, albeit in separate studies, to the experience of violent trauma, childhood maltreatment, and spousal abuse. This study proposed a model in which postpartum depression mediates the relation between attachment trauma and maternal self-efficacy, with emotional support

Early detection of mental illness for women suffering high-risk pregnancies: an explorative study on self-perceived burden during pregnancy and early postpartum depressive symptoms among Chinese women hospitalized with threatened preterm labour.

BACKGROUND: The mental health of pregnant women, particularly those with elevated risks, has been an issue of global concern. Thus far, few studies have addressed the mental health of pregnant women with threatened preterm labour (TPL). This study investigated the prevalence of self-perceived burden (SPB) among Chinese women hospitalized due to TPL during pregnancy and early postpartum depressive disorders, exploring the effect of SPB and other potential risk factors on the early signs of postpartum depressive disorders. METHODS: A self-reported survey was conducted in the obstetrics departme

Prevalence and incidence of probable perinatal depression among women enrolled in Option B+ antenatal HIV care in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression is a common condition of pregnancy and the postpartum period. Depression negatively affects engagement in HIV care, but systematic screening for perinatal depression is not done in most sub-Saharan African countries. Estimating the burden and timing of perinatal depression can help inform medical programs with the current scale-up of HIV care for pregnant women. METHODS: Women (n = 299) initiating antiretroviral therapy for HIV were recruited from a government antenatal clinic in Malawi in 2015-2016 into a cohort study. Probable perinatal depression was assess

The healthy migrant effect and predictors of perinatal depression.

PROBLEM: Although prenatal depression is a risk factor for postpartum depression, current screening tools for prenatal depression fail to predict postpartum depression in some marginalized populations. BACKGROUND: The assessment of other risk factors along with prenatal depression may be needed to improve prediction of postpartum depression and these risk factors may be specific to immigrants. AIMS: We investigated the predictive utility of several measures in relation to postpartum depressive symptoms in: recent immigrants, less recent immigrants and Canadian-born women. METHODS: Measures

Association between Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and Serum Levels of Ketone Bodies and Vitamin D, Thyroid Function, and Iron Metabolism.

Suicide due to postpartum depression is the most common perinatal-related death and is a social concern in Japan. Nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy may contribute to postpartum depression; therefore, we investigated the relationship between postpartum depression and nutritional status during pregnancy and postpartum. We focused specifically on ketone bodies because they are known to protect brain cells. The relationship between the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) scores and the serum levels of ketone bodies and vitamin D, thyroid function, and iron metabolism was examined.

Factors associated to depressive symptoms in mothers with children hospitalized in pediatric and neonatology units of Peru: a case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression has increased significantly worldwide, but in the central Peruvian mountain, there are no studies that address this problem. OBJECTIVES: To identify and to establish risk factors for postpartum depression in mothers whose children are hospitalized in pediatrics/neonatology units in Huancayo. METHODS: This is a case-control study. Medical records of mothers whose children were hospitalized in pediatrics/neonatology units during 2017 were included. The cases were defined as patients who “had symptoms of postpartum depression." This variable was crossed with

Depression precedes, but does not follow, gestational diabetes.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether past history of depression is associated with increased rates of gestational diabetes, and whether history of gestational diabetes is associated with increased rates of postpartum depression. RESEARCH DESIGN: Data for this case-control study consisted of de-identified chart records for 1439 women who received pregnancy care at a large university hospital between 1998 and 2017. RESULTS: A history of depression prior to pregnancy was associated with gestational diabetes requiring insulin, although not with subtler degrees of gestational hyperglycemia. Diabetes

Examining multilevel resilience as a moderator of associations between gendered racial microaggressions and postpartum mental health and functioning.

The United States is currently facing a maternal health crisis, and mental health issues are a leading preventable cause of maternal mortality. We assessed the influence of resilience on the relationship between gendered racial microaggressions (GRM) and postpartum depressive symptoms and functioning. We analyzed data among 265 postpartum Global Majority participants across four Philadelphia and New York hospitals. We administered the adapted Gendered Racial Microaggressions Scale (α = 0.97) to participants before discharge. Postpartum depressive symptoms, postpartum functioning, and resilienc
