Memantine in neurological disorders - schizophrenia and depression.

Memantine is used in Alzheimer's disease treatment as a non-competitive modern-affinity strong voltage-dependent N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist. The fundamental role of these receptors is to bind glutamate: the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, believed to play a crucial role in neuronal plasticity and learning mechanisms. Glutamate transmission plays an important role in all internal CNS structures and maintains the physiological state of the brain. Excessive glutamate transmission can lead to enlarged calcium ion current which may cause neurotoxicity; however, insuffic

Symptoms of Depression in Patients with Chemosensory Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with chemosensory dysfunction frequently report symptoms of depression. The current study aims to clarify whether the type (smell dysfunction, taste dysfunction, and mixed smell and taste dysfunction), severity, duration, or cause of dysfunction have differential impacts on the symptoms of depression. METHODS: 899 patients with chemosensory disorders and 62 controls were included. Following a structured interview and an otorhinolaryngological examination, subjects underwent olfactory tests (Sniffin' Sticks), gustatory tests (taste sprays) and an assessment of depressive

[The importance of the kynurenine pathway in depressive disorders].

Depressive disorders are the most frequently diagnosed mental disorder. It is assumed that the etiology of depression is multifactorial and the individual theories complement each other. Referring to the neurochemical hypothesis of the underlying depressive disorder, the relationship between lowering levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine and a change in mood is suggested. Particular attention has been given to serotonin, called the happiness hormone, which is synthesized from the exogenous amino acid tryptophan. The main methods of antidepressant treatment, in particular the use of ser…

Pupillary response abnormalities in depressive disorders.

Depressive disorders lack objective physiological measurements to characterize the affected population and facilitate study of relevant mechanisms. The melanopsin-mediated light signaling pathway may contribute to seasonal variation and can be measured non-invasively by pupillometry. We prospectively studied changes in melanopsin-mediated pupillary constriction in 19 participants with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 10 control across the summer and winter solstices. The melanopsin-mediated response, as measured by the pupil's sustained constriction six s after a high intensity blue light s…

[Enviromental factors related to depressive disorders].

BACKGROUND: As a result of their high prevalence, mayor depressive disorder single episode (MDDSE); major depressive disorder recurrent episodes (MDDREC); and dysthymia are considered an important public health problem. The objective of this paper was to identify and correlate environmental factors in patients with MDDSE, MDDREC and dysthymia. METHODS: 121 patients from the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social's Subzone General Hospital of San Andres Tuxtla, at Veracruz, were questioned by history with the risk variables. RESULTS: 16 of them were diagnosed with MDDREC, 72 with MDD and 33 wit…

The role of oxidative stress in depressive disorders.

UNLABELLED: Studies of the World Health Organization suggest that in the year 2020, depressive disorder will be the illness with the highest burden of disease. Especially unipolar depression is the psychiatric disorder with the highest prevalence and incidence, it is cost-intensive and has a relatively high morbidity. Lately, the biological process involved in the aetiology of depression has been the focus of research. Since its emergence, the monoamine hypothesis has been adjusted and extended considerably. An increasing body of evidence points to alterations not only in brain function, but a…

[Depressive disorders in patients in remission of epilepsy].

Based on the complex study of 150 patients with different forms of epilepsy in the remission phase, we singled out a group of 68 (45.3%) patients with depressive disorders. Variants of depressive disorders and their EEG-characteristics were described. Depressive disorders were stratified by the causes, course and response to pharmacotherapy into following variants: depressive disorders caused by the epileptic process per se; organic depressive disorder and disorder of adaptation with depression and anxiety-depressive disorders. Functional neuroimaging methods suggest the involvement of both th…

Managing depressive and anxiety disorders with escitalopram.

This article reviews escitalopram, the S-stereoisomer of the racemic compound citalopram, and a highly selective and potent member of the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor class of antidepressants. Escitalopram has a straightforward pharmacokinetic profile, little effect on hepatic metabolism, and is relatively safe in overdose. Similar to other members of the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor class, escitalopram (10-20 mg/day) is a well-tolerated and effective treatment of major depressive disorder. Although relatively few head-to-head comparative studies with other antidepressant…

Differentiating avoidant and depressive personality disorders.

The purpose of this study was to test a priori predictions about the way in which avoidant personality disorder (APD) can be differentiated from depressive personality disorder (DPD) in a clinical population. Psychiatric outpatients were administered two measures of DPD, including the SCID-II for other DSM-IV Axis II personality disorders, along with criterion measures upon which the two disorders would be differentiated. APD was found to be most strongly associated with state and trait measures of anxiety, while DPD was most strongly associated with state and trait measures of hostility. Indi

Comorbid depression and anxiety spectrum disorders.

The relationship between depression and anxiety disorders has long been a matter of controversy. The overlap of symptoms associated with these disorders makes diagnosis, research, and treatment particularly difficult. Recent evidence suggests genetic and neurobiologic similarities between depressive and anxiety disorders. Comorbid depression and anxiety are highly prevalent conditions. Patients with panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, and other anxiety disorders are also frequently clinically depressed. Approximately 85% of patients with depression also experience sign

[Poorly understood sleep disorders in depression].

Although the clinical symptoms of severe depression are easily recognized, this is not always the case in minimal forms or in certain masked depressions. Failure to respond to appropriate treatment may then be taken to indicate the possible existence of specific and organic sleep disorders with clinical symptoms similar to those of depressive illness. Sleep disorders mainly comprise sleep apnea and periodic movement of the lower limbs. Diagnosis can only be confirmed by EPS before a specific treatment is selected : correct diagnosis of the disorder is essential, particularly for sleep apnea, s
