The incidence of hand dermatitis and contact allergies was analyzed among dental technicians. A survey was carried out by postal questionnaire. It was returned by 106 technicians (88%); 30 had had skin problems, and 20 (19%) had present eruptions. All 20 were invited to a detailed dermatological investigation, but only seven participated. Epicutaneous tests to prosthetic materials were negative in these patients. The hand eruptions in 4 patients appeared to be irritant. 4 other patients (4%), who had had previous hand dermatitis, had a history of positive patch test reactions to methyl methacr…

2 cases of contact dermatitis to methyl methacrylate monomer are presented. The patients are nurses who mixed bone cement at orthopedic operations. During the procedure, they used 2 pairs of gloves (latex). Butyl rubber gloves are recommended for methyl methacrylate monomer to avoid sensitization and/or cumulative irritant contact dermatitis on the hands.

A 30-year-old woman had a pruritic skin lesion from which a yeastlike organism, Sporobolomyces holsaticus, was isolated. Members of this group of yeasts are found in the soil throughout the world and have been implicated only twice before in human infection. We report a third case of infection due to a Sporobolomyces organism.

Eczema (dermatitis) of the hands of medical personnel is a common skin disease. Occupational dermatitis of the hands arises from frequent contact with irritants and sensitizing agents. Differential diagnosis in hand eczema is usually only possible from the case history. One diagnostic tool is the screening of relevant contact allergies by patch-testing. The most frequent allergen in 114 cases of eczema of the hands in medical personnel between 1976 and 1980 at the Department of Dermatology and Allergology of the Municipal Hospital Schwabing in Munich was formaldehyde in 24 instances (i.e. 21%)…

An attempt is made to formulate some kind of working hypothesis concerning the pathophysiology, clinical appearance and treatment of irritant contact dermatitis. Acute irritant dermatitis may be caused by one single overwhelming external exposure of comparatively short duration. It is usually accidental and therefore recognized early as cause and effect. Chronic irritant dermatitis may be the result of a too early repetition of one impairing factor (chronic irritant dermatitis "traumiteration' type), but is more commonly the result of the influence of a variety of stimuli, each starting to be …

Eleven patients with dermatitis herpetiformis, all requiring dapsone to control their rash and taking a normal diet, were given disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) 1.5-1.6 g daily. Eight out of the eleven patients continued to take DSCG for periods varying from 6-11 months, the other three patients chose to discontinue the DSCG before 6 months. Of the eight patients taking DSCG for at least 6 months, none was able to stop taking dapsone. In three of the eight, the dapsone requirements were unaltered, whilst in two it decreased and in three it increased. The mean daily dose of dapsone was 105 mg/day b…

Two patients are described with dermatitis herpetiformis and Sjögren's syndrome. The increased incidence of autoantibodies in dermatitis herpetiformis would suggest that this association is significant. Antinuclear antibodies commonly occur in dermatitis herpetiformis (Seah et al,, 1971) yet are rarely associated with autoimmune disease in these patients (Moncada, 1974). This report records two patients with dermatitis herpetiformis and Sjögren's syndrome.
