The rash associated with picking daffodils has long been recognized, but the distribution and differing types of lesions have not been explained. This study, from observations in the field, attempts to clarify the position. The method of picking and then gathering the flowers explains the development of the rash at the points of contact of plant sap with skin. Crystals of calcium oxalate in the sap, in conjunction with alkaloids, act as an irritant, and also cause the characteristic sores.

This paper reports the evaluation of a skin care education programme conducted on a fine chemicals manufacturing site where over 1,000 employees are located. Approximately 60% are involved in chemical manufacture. Over a 12 month period production staff received training in prevention of occupational dermatoses linked to a site-wide poster initiative. The incidence of new cases of occupational dermatoses fell from 0.055 (70 cases in 1,277 employees) to 0.021 (27 cases in 1,277 employees) before and after the intervention respectively (p < 0.0001). After other factors such as chemicals handled,

An outbreaks of cases of airborne irritant contact dermatitis developed among incinerator workers employed in a sewage treatment facility. Contamination of the workplace and workers' clothing by sludge from the interstices of an incinerator exhaust fan proved to be the cause of the problem. The irritancy of the sludge was determined by tests in rabbits. There was no recurrence of the problem after the institution of hygienic measures designed to control contact with the sludge during subsequent fan maintenance procedures.

Irritant Contact Dermatitis (ICD) is the most common occupational skin disorder. During ICD, keratinocytes initiate the inflammatory cascade by producing cytokines including IL-6. This laboratory previously reported that IL-6 deficiency exacerbates skin inflammation during ICD, yet the role of the IL-6Rα in keratinocyte function has yet to be elucidated. To investigate how IL-6Rα function in keratinocytes influences the inflammatory response during ICD, keratinocyte-specific IL-6Rα KO (IL6raΔker) and WT mice were exposed to two well-known occupational irritants; JP-8 jet fuel, and benzalkonium

The Korean list of occupational skin diseases was amended in July 2013. The past list was constructed according to the causative agent and the target organ, and the items of that list had not been reviewed for a long period. The revised list was reconstructed to include diseases classified by the International Classification of Diseases (10th version). Therefore, the items of compensable occupational skin diseases in the amended list in Korea comprise contact dermatitis; chemical burns; Stevens-Johnson syndrome; tar-related skin diseases; infectious skin diseases; skin injury-induced celluliti

Hairdressing is one of the most developing branch of the service industry in Poland. Providing representatives of this occupational group with preventive health care services it should be remembered that they are at risk of skin and respiratory diseases, which occur due to a quite frequent exposure to harmful agents in the work environment of hairdressers and hairdressing apprentices. Interestingly, a much lower number of researches concentrate on respiratory symptoms than on skin disorders in hairdressers. The authors of this article have carried out the first Polish follow-up study focused n

Skin-protection products are used in the occupational field to protect the skin against hazards from the workplace. They are only to be used for non-toxic, non-cancerogenous and non-sensitizing low-grade irritants such as water, detergents, and cutting fluids and cannot replace other protective measures such as gloves. The recommendation of products mainly focuses on the physico-chemical properties of the irritant and the protective cream. More in vivo studies and intervention studies are needed to prove the efficacy of skin-protection products under real-life conditions.

A national data base on chemical products (the Danish Product Register (PROBAS)) was searched in order to survey occupational exposure to isothiazolinones. 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one/2-methyl-4-isothiazolin+ ++-3-one(MCI/MI) was registered in 550 products, 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one(BIT) in 156 products and 2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one in 16 products. For the MCI/MI-containing products, of which 343 had information on concentration, 64% of the products contained above or equal to 0.001% (10 ppm) MCI/MI. Main product categories were paints, hair shampoos, skin care products, and c

Allergic contact dermatitis is one of the most common recorded occupational diseases. There are many different substances that the skin comes into contact with on a daily basis and that can cause ACD, e.g., preservatives, surfactants, and antimicrobial agents. The development of a mouse model of ACD has provided insight into the immune mechanisms involved. Drugs used in the treatment of skin diseases have many side effects. Therefore, alternative methods of suppressing the immune response to reduce the symptoms of skin diseases are being sought. In recent years, high hopes have been placed on

Health care workers may be at risk of occupational allergic contact dermatitis because of their frequent exposure to medical hand skin cleansers. We identified American Contact Dermatitis Society Core 80 Allergens found in medical hand skin cleansers (waterless skin soaps, water-needed skin soaps, and skin disinfectants) in the United States and developed a list of "low-allergen" medical hand skin cleansers. Waterless skin soaps most commonly contained fragrance, tocopherol, and sodium benzoate. Top allergens in water-needed skin soaps included fragrance, chloroxylenol, propylene glycol, and c
