COVID-19 Pandemic & Skin Care Guidelines for Health Care Professionals.

The Novel corona virus is bringing multiple challenges for health care professionals. Skin is the biggest organ and the first line of defense against different infections and external factors. Being the front line warriors, health care professionals are susceptible to various skin conditions due to prolonged use of personal protective equipment. These adverse skin conditions are redness, irritation, itching, contact dermatitis, and aggravation of underlying skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and acne vulgaris. In the current global situation, the potential incidence of such adverse der

Langerhans cell histiocytosis: A great imitator.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is an uncommon but serious inflammatory neoplasia that affects many organs, including the skin. Though uncommon, it should remain high on a clinician's differential diagnosis in treatment-resistant cases of conditions, such as seborrheic dermatitis, diaper dermatitis, arthropod bites, and many more. A thorough history nd physical examination for each patient can aid in the diagnosis; however, if clinically suspicious for LCH, a punch biopsy should be performed. Histologic evaluation of LCH is often enough to differentiate it from the many clinical mimickers.

Erythromelalgia involving the face.

Erythromelalgia is a rare disorder characterized by burning pain, erythema, and increased temperature typically involving the distal extremities. Although it can progress to involve the face, erythromelalgia presenting only on the face is particularly rare. This disorder is often misdiagnosed when it presents on the extremities and is even more likely to be misdiagnosed when presenting only on the face, delaying appropriate treatment and causing considerable frustration for the patient. We report a case of a 26-year-old woman with erythromelalgia that involved only the face for a number of yea

Skin diseases associated with Malassezia species in humans. Clinical features and diagnostic criteria.

Malassezia yeasts not only cause the well known pityriasis versicolor and folliculitis, but also play an important role in other skin diseases, including seborrheic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. The presence of Malassezia yeasts may be confirmed by direct microscopic examination and cultures of skin scrapings. In pityriasis versicolor the direct microscopic examination is the rapidest and surest test for confirming the clinical diagnosis. The preparation will show a cluster of globose budding spores with thick or double wall and short hyphae. For detecting Malassezia in the other diseases

[Cutaneous immune and inflammatory reactions to Malassezia furfur].

Initiation and aggravation of several inflammatory skin diseases are associated with Malassezia furfur. These are divided into at least two groups. In one group including tinea versicolor and Malassezia folliculitis, the growth of Malassezia furfur directly triggers the development of the cutaneous lesions. In another group including atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis, cutaneous lesions already developed by other mechanisms are aggravated by the growth of Malassezia furfur. Recent progress of molecular biology techniques revealed that Malassezia furfur is divided into at l…

A review of clinical trials of lithium in medicine.

Since the approval of lithium use in treatment of acute mania, there have been numerous clinical trials of lithium in medical and psychiatric disorders. This paper gives a brief review of the literature on lithium trials in approximately fourteen medical conditions. These are: hyperthyroidism, metabolizing thyroid cancer, syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, premenstrual tension syndrome, anorexia nervosa, Felty's syndrome, chemotherapy-induced neutropenia, aplastic anemia, seborrheic dermatitis, eczematoid dermatitis, cyclic vomiting, diabetes mellitus and asthma. Common Skin Conditions in Children: Neonatal Skin Lesions.

Skin findings during the initial month of life are ubiquitous. One study estimated that more than 95% of newborns have cutaneous findings, which often are distressing to parents but frequently are benign and self-limited. Among them are milia, cutis marmorata, congenital dermal melanocytosis, and the benign neonatal pustular eruptions (eg, benign cephalic pustulosis, erythema toxicum neonatorum, transient neonatal pustular melanosis). Clinicians need to recognize these benign skin conditions and differentiate them from more serious conditions, such as infectious pustular eruptions from bacteri

Skin conditions: common skin rashes in infants.

Infants exhibit many skin rashes. Erythema toxicum neonatorum presents as erythematous macules, papules, and pustules on the face, trunk, and extremities; it typically resolves spontaneously within 1 week. Neonatal acne presents as comedones or erythematous papules on the face, scalp, chest, and back. Infantile acne is similar but starts after the neonatal period. Both conditions typically resolve spontaneously; failure to resolve within 1 year warrants evaluation for androgen excess. Neonatal cephalic pustulosis is an acne variant caused by hypersensitivity to Malassezia furfur. It is typical

Plica "neuropathica" in an 11-month-old boy.

Plica neuropathica is an acquired, irreversible tangling and matting of scalp hair presenting as discrete masses. Many cases are reported in the literature, but it has never been reported in an infant. Herein we report the first case of plica neuropathica in an 11-month-old.

[Relationship between Malassezia Yeast and Infantile Seborrhoeic Dermatitis].

We examined 52 patients with infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis (ISD) and 47 healthy 1-month-old infants. Yeast cells on the right side of the face were counted by direct microscopic examination, and isolates from the left side of the face were identified by Tween test. Yeast cells were more numerous patients with ISD than in the healthy infants. M. furfur and M. globosa were isolated from ISD patients at significantly higher rates than from healthy infants.

[Transcutaneous absorption of ketoconazole in infant after application of Ketoderm].

The percutaneous absorption of ketoconazole was studied in 7 infants (1 to 5 month of age) with extensive seborrhoeic dermatitis (greater than 50% of the surface area), after application of a 2% ketoconazole cream (Ketoderm). The plasma concentrations of ketoconazole were measured by HPLC at the first, 5th and 10th day of the treatment. Despite the large surface involved, plasma levels ranging, from 0.018 to 0.133 micrograms/ml were measured. These values are low, as compared with the concentrations observed following oral administration (4 to 9 micrograms/ml), and suggest that the occurrence
