We used the indirect microimmunofluorescence test to determine the presence of antibodies in sheep, cattle, goat, cat, and dog sera to phase I and II Coxiella burnetii antigens in Nova Scotia. During an outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis in a locality (Las Rosas, Cojedes State, Venezuela) previously non-endemic, 12.9% of humans, 7% of dogs and 21.4% of donkeys (Equus asinus) had lesions with parasites. Using the indirect hemagglutination test, antibodies against Enterobacteriaceae common antigen (CA) were tested in the sera of 123 horses, 142 cows, 108 sheep, 142 mature pigs and 60 piglets (3-4 weeks of age). The controversial situation of chronic low level nitrate intoxication may involve oxidation of important iron-containing enzymes, much like oxidation of hemoglobin (Fe++) iron to methomoglobin (Fe+++). This oxication causes enzyme inhibition and unlike hemoglobin, which has the methemoglobin reduction system, these enzymes remain in the oxidized state, resulting in the clinical signs and conditions described. This condition may be diagnosed more accurately by measuring erythrocyte catalase activity in addition to blood or dietary levels of nitrate.

The proprioceptive innervation of the external cremaster muscle of some domestic animals was studied. Muscle spindles and tendon organs with their well-known features were found, but this finding was uncommon and unexpected in the investigated animals. For this reason, we believe that there is no relationship between the presence of these proprioceptors and the cremasteric reflex.

A serological examination was carried out for L. monocytogenes antibodies on 9,318 domestic animal--7,809 bovine, 838 horses and 671 swine--in São Paulo, Brazil.
