Preconceptual paternal ethanol drinking induces sexually dimorphic behavioural changes across 2 generations.

This study aimed to assess both the inter and transgenerational impacts of preconceptual paternal ethanol Exposure (PPEE) using a rat model. Sprague Dawley male rats (F0) underwent chronic voluntary ethanol intake and at the end of the drinking paradigm were kept for one spermatogenesis cycle before being mated with ethanol naïve females. The litters and matched controls were behaviourally assessed, and a cohort of F1 males mated to observe a F2 generation. PPEE caused behavioural changes in both the F1 and F2 generations, including altering litter sizes and delaying development. The F1 also s…

Increased alcohol-biased choice behavior in mouse models of high alcohol drinking.

BACKGROUND: Rodent models have explored the transition from controlled goal-directed consumption to habitual/compulsive intake using different procedures. This study evaluates the effect of concurrent presentation of sucrose on alcohol intake using two models that induce high levels of alcohol intake in mice that experienced chronic intermittent ethanol (CIE) exposure and/or stress. METHODS: In Experiment 1, male mice were exposed to four cycles of CIE or control (air) exposure, and once an increase in voluntary alcohol was observed in CIE mice, mice were offered a choice between alcohol or i

Swiss Webster mice as a model for excessive alcohol binge drinking consumption.

Binge drinking (BD) is a widespread pattern of excessive alcohol consumption among adolescents and young adults with detrimental consequences for brain development. Animal models are essential for investigating the neurobiological mechanisms underlying BD, but selecting an appropriate model is critical to ensure relevance to human behavior. This study aims to validate a murine model of (BD) using Swiss Webster mice. To achieve this, both adolescent and adult mice were exposed to either a single binge (SB) or multiple binge (MB) of BD through intraperitoneal ethanol injections. The findings rev…

Adverse health outcomes associated with drinking highly saline water: a systematic review.

In climate change-affected coastal areas, sea level rise, storm surges, droughts and altered rainfalls are significantly increasing salinity levels in drinking water sources. This is a major public health problem that affects many millions of people. We systematically reviewed and assessed the strength and quality of the evidence on the relationship between drinking water with high sodium levels (> 200 mgNa/l) and adverse cardiovascular, renal, and pregnancy-related health outcomes, following the PRISMA guidelines, the ROBINS-E Cochrane tool and the Navigation Guide. From five bibliographic da…

Health risk assessment via ingestion of disinfection by-products in drinking water.

Disinfection is a critical process to ensure the safety of drinking water. To curb the spread of various bacteria and viruses, disinfectants are extensively employed in communities, hospitals, sewage treatment plants, and other settings. However, disinfectants can produce disinfection by-products (DBPs) that threaten human health. Despite their importance, research and systematic analyses of these risks remain limited. This study monitored DBPs in drinking water across 13 districts and counties in Hangzhou, conducting a risk assessment based on the health risk assessment model recommended by t…

Comprehensive Toxicological Assessment of Halobenzoquinones in Drinking Water at Environmentally Relevant Concentration.

Halobenzoquinones (HBQs), an emerging unregulated category of disinfection byproduct (DBP) in drinking water, have aroused an increasing concern over their potential health risks. However, the chronic toxicity of HBQs at environmentally relevant concentrations remains largely unknown. Here, the occurrence and concentrations of 13 HBQs in drinking water from a northern megacity in China were examined using ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Four HBQs, including 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DCBQ), 2,6-dibromo-1…

Brief report: Aging adult utilization of an mHealth intervention for problem drinking.

Alcohol consumption among aging adults is a growing concern due to its potential to exacerbate age-related health conditions. Developing accessible interventions for this demographic is imperative. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions offer a promising avenue, but their effectiveness and engagement among aging adults remain uncertain. This study is a secondary analysis that aimed to compare the utilization and outcomes of an mHealth intervention between aging (50+) and younger adults in a clinical trial of an mHealth intervention (Step Away) for reduced drinking. At the three-month follow-up,…

Initiation of high-intensity drinking and subsequent substance use in young adulthood.

High-intensity drinking (HID; 10+ drinks/occasion) is associated with acute and long-term risks, including use of other substances. Earlier HID initiation is associated with high-risk alcohol use in young adulthood. Less is known about when HID initiation occurs relative to other substances and how it is associated with subsequent substance use. This study examined survey data from 468 respondents (35.5% female, 65.5% non-Hispanic white) who reported initiating HID by age 20. Weighted descriptive statistics of year of initiation for HID, marijuana, and nicotine were obtained. Weighted linear a…

Harms from others' drinking among college students: Prevalence and risk factors, 2022.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol's harms to others (AHTO) refers to the negative effects experienced by individuals other than the drinker. This study investigates the prevalence and risk factors of AHTOs among US college students (sophomores/juniors), based on the first national probability-based survey conducted in 20 years. METHODS: We assessed AHTOs in the fall of 2021 from 1918 participants across 46 US schools, weighting the data to reflect the US undergraduate sophomore/junior population. We combined survey weights and prevalence estimates to approximate the number of sophomores/juniors in the US

Repeated Δ-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol administration dose dependently increases stablished schedule-induced drinking.

RATIONALE: Schedule-induced drinking (SID) reproduces an excessive and repetitive behavioural pattern that has led to propose this procedure as an animal model to study compulsive behaviours. Although it is known that cannabis can cause several adverse effects, in recent years there has been great interest in the medical application of cannabis derivatives for obsessive-compulsive related disorders. OBJECTIVES: The present study investigated the effects of repeated THC administration on rates of previously acquired SID, as well as the possible alteration of its temporal distribution along int…

Drinking water nitrate and risk of pregnancy loss: a nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Nitrate contamination is seen in drinking water worldwide. Nitrate may pass the placental barrier. Despite suggestive evidence of fetal harm, the potential association between nitrate exposure from drinking water and pregnancy loss remains to be studied. We aimed to investigate if nitrate in drinking water was associated with the risk of pregnancy loss. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cohort study of 100,410 pregnancies (enrolled around gestational week 11) in the Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC) during 1996-2002. Spontaneous pregnancy losses before gestational week 22 were …

Water Drinking Behavior Associated with Aversive Arousal in Rats: An Integrative Approach.

Cholinergic muscarinic stimulation of vast areas of the limbic brain induced a well-documented polydipsia in laboratory rats. This excessive water-drinking behavior has not received any convincing biological and physiological interpretation for the last 50 years. This review offers such an interpretation and suggests that cholinergically induced drinking response, mostly by carbachol, is associated with activation of the ascending mesolimbic cholinergic system that serves for initiation of emotional aversive arousal of the organism. The ascending cholinergic system originates from the laterodo…

Review on heterogeneous oxidation and adsorption for arsenic removal from drinking water.

The long term exposure of arsenic via drinking water has resulted in wide occurrence of arsenisim globally, and the oxidation of the non-ionic arsenite (As(III)) to negatively-charged arsenate (As(V)) is of crucial importance for the promising removal of arsenic. The chemical oxidants of ozone, chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and potassium permanganate may achieve this goal; however, their application in developing countries is sometimes restricted by the complicate operation and high cost. This review paper focuses on the heterogeneous oxidation of As(III) by solid oxidants such as manganese oxid…
