A case of mesenteric fibrosis secondary to post-traumatic mesenteric hematoma, resulting in duodenal stenosis eight years after the traumatic event is presented. A 50 year-old man was hospitalized with nausea and vomiting. An intraabdominal cystic mass was seen in abdominal ultrasonography and CT. Duodenum was found to be obstructed due to extrinsic compression in upper endoscopy. BACKGROUND: Lansoprazole is a new proton pump inhibitor for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease.
METHODS: A double-blind, multicentre study was undertaken in 296 patients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcer to compare the efficacy and safety of lansoprazole 15, 30 or 60 mg with placebo. Endoscopic reflectance spectrophotometry measures the index of oxygen saturation (ISO2), which is significantly correlated with blood flow. In a 50-year-old man with extrahepatic cholestasis and iron-deficiency anaemia, local operative excision of a 4 cm submucous tumour of the papilla of Vater revealed on histological and immunochemical examination a somatostatinoma. Subsequent duodenopancreatectomy further demonstrated in the surgical specimen a lymph node metastasis and a 5 mm somatostatinoma in the papilla minor. The patient has now been free of symptoms for 12 months on substitution treatment with pancreatic enzymes.

The healing rate of duodenal ulcers may be accelerated by secretory inhibitors such as histamine H2-receptor antagonists and pirenzepine, by antacids, by protective drugs such as sucralfate and colloidal bismuth, and by antidepressant drugs such as trimipramine. The effect of these drugs on the rate of healing is comparable; they differ with respect to practicability of treatment, incidence and types of side effects, and suitability for long-term administration. Currently, the most versatile and most thoroughly investigated drugs are the histamine H2-receptor antagonists.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to compare the Biohit Lactose Intolerance Quick Test (BLIQT) to the criterion standard biochemical duodenal lactase (DL) activity assay in the paediatric population using standard statistical comparative tests.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Several gastrointestinal diseases are localised in the small bowel and are confirmed by duodenal biopsies upon upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. However, the clinical value of routine duodenal biopsies during endoscopy has not been satisfactorily defined and was assessed in the current study.
METHODS: In 1000 consecutive patients duodenal biopsies were performed during routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Endoscopic diagnoses, symptoms and the prevalence of anaemia were correlated with the histological diagnoses.
