Observation in inner ear of tree shrew using scanning electron microscope and the Atoh1 distribution in cochlea.

This study aimed to observe the ultrastructure on the surface of the inner ear of a normal tree shrew using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The specimens of cochlea, macula utriculi, macula sacculi, and crista ampullaris of the normal adult tree shrew were collected and observed by SEM. We used immunofluorescence for cochlear protein Atoh1 staining. We observed that cochlea of the tree shrew is centered on the cochlear axis, circling about 3.5 times from bottom to top of the cochlea. The organ of Corti is located between medial and lateral grooves, including inner and outer hair cells as w

Comparison of the Surgical Techniques and Robotic Techniques for Cochlear Implantation in Terms of the Trajectories Toward the Inner Ear.

OBJECTIVES: The ideal outcome of cochlear implant surgery involves the insertion of the array inside the scala tympani of the cochlea with the least mechanical trauma. Recently, round window insertion and the direction in which the cochlea is approached have gained attention in this respect. The Angles of Cochlear Approach (ACA) can be defined with a plane in the plane of the basal turn, termed the in-plane angle, and the plane orthogonal to this plane, termed the out-plane angle. The aim of this study was to compare the trajectory angles for different surgical techniques of Veria, suprameatal

Vascular endothelial growth factor is required for regeneration of auditory hair cells in the avian inner ear.

Hair cells in the auditory organ of the vertebrate inner ear are the sensory receptors that convert acoustic stimuli into electrical signals that are conveyed along the auditory nerve to the brainstem. Hair cells are highly susceptible to ototoxic drugs, infection, and acoustic trauma, which can cause cellular degeneration. In mammals, hair cells that are lost after damage are not replaced, leading to permanent hearing impairments. By contrast, supporting cells in birds and other non-mammalian vertebrates regenerate hair cells after damage, which restores hearing function. The cellular mechani

Antioxidants reduce cellular and functional changes induced by intense noise in the inner ear and cochlear nucleus.

The present study marks the first evaluation of combined application of the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and the free radical spin trap reagent, disodium 2,4-disulfophenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (HPN-07), as a therapeutic approach for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Pharmacokinetic studies and C-14 tracer experiments demonstrated that both compounds achieve high blood levels within 30 min after i.p injection, with sustained levels of radiolabeled cysteine (released from NAC) in the cochlea, brainstem, and auditory cortex for up to 48 h. Rats exposed to 115 dB octave-band noise (10-20 kHz

Loss of osteoprotegerin expression in the inner ear causes degeneration of the cochlear nerve and sensorineural hearing loss.

Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a key regulator of bone remodeling. Mutations and variations in the OPG gene cause many human diseases that are characterized by not only skeletal abnormalities but also poorly understood hearing loss: Paget's disease, osteoporosis, and celiac disease. To gain insight into the mechanisms of hearing loss in OPG deficiency, we studied OPG knockout (Opg(-/-)) mice. We show that they develop sensorineural hearing loss, in addition to conductive hearing loss due to abnormal middle-ear bones. OPG deficiency caused demyelination and degeneration of the cochlear nerve in vivo.

Historical Aspects of Inner Ear Anatomy and Biology that Underlie the Design of Hearing and Balance Prosthetic Devices.

This review presents some of the major historical events that advanced the body of knowledge of the anatomy of the inner ear and its sensory receptors as well as the biology of these receptors that underlies the sensory functions of hearing and balance. This knowledge base of the inner ear's structure/function has been an essential factor for the design and construction of prosthetic devices to aid patients with deficits in their senses of hearing and balance. Prosthetic devices are now available for severely hearing impaired and deaf patients to restore hearing and are known as cochlear impla

Low-frequency therapeutic ultrasound with varied duty cycle: effects on the ischemic brain and the inner ear.

Sonothrombolysis is a promising modality for acute stroke treatment. In vitro data suggest a duty cycle dependence of sonothrombolytic efficacy of low-frequency applications. The aim of our study was to examine its impact on safety issues in a rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion. Rats were exposed to transcranial 60-kHz ultrasound with varied duty cycles. To determine effects on the inner ear, the acoustic threshold was determined in additional healthy animals (acoustic evoked potentials). A short duty cycle (20%) resulted in significant adverse effects (ischemic volume, hemorrhage,

Histology and synchrotron radiation-based microtomography of the inner ear in a molecularly confirmed case of CHARGE syndrome.

CHARGE (Coloboma of the iris or retina, heart defects, atresia of the choanae, retardation of growth and/or development, genital anomalies, ear anomalies) syndrome (OMIM #214800) affects about 1 in 10,000 children and is most often caused by chromodomain helicase DNA-binding protein-7 (CHD7) mutations. Inner ear defects and vestibular abnormalities are particularly common. Specifically, semicircular canal (SCC) hypoplasia/aplasia and the presence of a Mondini malformation can be considered pathognomonic in the context of congenital malformations of the CHARGE syndrome. The inner ears of Northern Canadian freshwater fishes following exposure to seismic air gun sounds.

An earlier study examined the effects of exposure to seismic air guns on the hearing of three species of fish from the Mackenzie River Delta in Northern Canada [Popper et al. (2005). "Effects of exposure to seismic airgun use on hearing of three fish species," J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 117, 3958-3971]. The sound pressure levels to which the fishes were exposed were a mean received level of 205-209 dB re 1 microPa (peak) per shot and an approximate received mean SEL of 176-180 dB re 1 microPa(2) s per shot. In this report, the same animals were examined to determine whether there were effects on the

The influence of loud sound stress on expression of osmotic stress protein 94 in the murine inner ear.

Osmotic stress protein 94 (OSP94), a member of the heat shock protein 110/SSE subfamily, is expressed in certain organs such as the kidney, testis, and brain where it can act as a molecular chaperon. In general, its alteration in expression is in response to hyper-ionic and osmotic stress as well as heat shock stress. Since many cells in the inner ear are involved in active ion transportation and are constantly exposed to two ionic different environments, we hypothesize that OSP94 may be expressed in the inner ear and its expression may be influenced by loud sound stress (LSS). With immunohist

[The influence of glucocorticoids on the view of chicken's inner ear damage after exposure to wide-band-noise].

The aim of the study was to assess the influence of glucocorticoids on the view of hair cell regeneration process being in the chicken's inner ear (basilar papilla - BP) after exposure to wide-band noise at the level 120 dB (A) for 48 hours. We found that glucocorticoids given during and/or after exposure to the noise have a cytoprotective activity to the hair cells, they limitate the extensiveness and decrease the dynamics of hair cells injury. We observed that new "young" hair cells reappeared at the sensory epithelium on the 7th day after the end of exposure. Regenerated hair cells have imm

New implantable hearing device based on a micro-actuator that is directly coupled to the inner ear fluid.

A new hearing therapy called direct acoustical cochlear stimulation (DACS) was developed and validated in a first clinical trial with four patients. The key component of this therapy based on an implantable hearing device is a micro-actuator that is implanted in the mastoid right behind the external auditory canal of a patient. It generates vibrations that are directly coupled to the inner ear fluids and bypass therefore the outer and the middle ear. This allows treating severe to profound mixed hearing loss. The actuator transfer function has to be similar to the transfer function of a normal

The inner ear morphology and hearing abilities of the Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) and the Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens).

Concern regarding the spread of silver carp (Hypopthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Aristichthysc nobilis) through the Illinois River has prompted the development of an Acoustic Fish Deterrent (AFD) system. The application of this technology has resulted in a need to understand the auditory physiology of fish other than the target species, in order to minimise the effect of the AFD barrier on the ecology of indigenous fish populations. To this end, both the structures involved in sound reception and the hearing abilities of the paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) and the lake sturgeon (Acipe

[Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of acquired abnormalities of the inner ear and cerebello-pontine angle].

CT and MRI of acquired abnormalities of the inner ear and cerebello-pontine angle present themselves with very typical findings. The imaging should be adapted to the pathology looked for and either CT or MRI should be used alone or in combination. CT, especially high resolution CT (HRCT), provides an excellent bone contrast, while MRI has a much superior soft tissue contrast. Acute inflammatory changes of the inner ear are solely depicted by contrast-enhanced MRI. HRCT excellently depicts osseous changes of the inner ear and cerebellopontine angle such as chronic ossifying labyrinthitis occurr
