Computational modeling of neuromuscular activation by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation to the lower back.

Objectives.Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) to the lower back is an established electrical therapy for acute and chronic back pain. The efficacy and mechanisms of lower back TENS depend on the penetration depth of electrical current. We compare the intensity and spatial extent (depth) of current flow in the body during TENS with varied electrode positions/shapes on the human back.Materials and Methods.A high-resolution MRI-derived anatomical model of the back was developed, considering major tissue compartments, including skin and muscles. TENS with upper and lower back elect

Voice-Controlled Dual-Site Functional Electrical Stimulation Enables Tenodesis Grasping.

Patients with high-level spinal cord injuries (SCIs) that maintain wrist movement but lack the ability to close the hand volitionally may preserve some degree of hand function by using the tenodesis grasp. The tenodesis grasp consists of extending the wrist to passively shorten the finger flexors, resulting in the fingers closing. However, the tenodesis grasp is unavailable to patients who lack wrist function. To address this, we developed a voice-controlled, dual-site, functional electrical stimulation system that evokes the tenodesis grasp by stimulating the wrist extensors and finger flexor

Altius electrical nerve stimulation for post-amputation pain treatment: a comprehensive review.

Post-amputation pain (PAP), which includes both residual limb and phantom limb pain, affects up to 85% of amputees and severely impairs quality of life, mobility, and psychological well-being while incurring substantial healthcare costs. Conventional treatments - pharmacotherapy and neuromodulation techniques such as spinal cord stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation - often provide inadequate relief and are associated with adverse effects like opioid dependence and systemic toxicity. The Altius High-Frequency Nerve Block System is an innovative therapeutic approach that delivers high-fr

Effects of Percutaneous Electrical Stimulation on Chronic Neuropathic Pain: A Retrospective Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain affects millions worldwide, with 15% to 25% being neuropathic due to conditions like diabetic neuropathy and radiculopathy. Neuropathic pain, often described as burning or shooting, includes symptoms like allodynia, significantly impacting the quality of life and posing high economic costs. While pharmacological treatments are common, many patients require more invasive, costly interventions such as spinal cord stimulation. As an alternative, percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) therapy (PT) offers a less invasive, cost-effective approach that can be admi

Home-based Functional Electrical Stimulation for Treatment of Patients with Facial Nerve Paralysis.

Peripheral facial paralysis results in complete loss of contractibility in facial muscles, atrophy and asymmetry. Patients performed functional electrical stimulation (FES) home training twice daily over 1 year to show its effect and define stimulation parameters. A specific response was obtained in all 10 patients. Since the mean phase duration (PD) could be reduced (155.0 ± 55.0 to 51.0 ± 12.4 msec), this allowed the mean stimulation frequency to be increased (1.3 ± 0.5 to 5.0 Hz ± 1.5 Hz). The PD reduction to generate the same charge increased the voltage (16.2 ± 2.5 to 27.2 V ± 5.9). A sui

[Analysis of the effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on corticomuscular coupling during standing balance].

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been proven to promote human balance, but research on its impact on motor ability mainly focuses on external physical analysis, with little analysis on the intrinsic neural regulatory mechanisms. This study, for the first time, investigated the effects of NMES on cortical activity and cortico-muscular functional coupling (CMFC) during standing balance. Twelve healthy subjects were recruited in bilateral NMES training, with each session consisting of 60 electrically induced isometric contractions. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, electromyogram

Potentiation of cortico-spinal output via targeted electrical stimulation of the motor thalamus.

Cerebral white matter lesions prevent cortico-spinal descending inputs from effectively activating spinal motoneurons, leading to loss of motor control. However, in most cases, the damage to cortico-spinal axons is incomplete offering a potential target for therapies aimed at improving volitional muscle activation. Here we hypothesize that, by engaging direct excitatory connections to cortico-spinal motoneurons, stimulation of the motor thalamus could facilitate activation of surviving cortico-spinal fibers thereby immediately potentiating motor output. To test this hypothesis, we identify opt

Electrical stimulation and conductive materials: electrophysiology-based treatment for spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury is a serious disease of the central nervous system. The electrophysiological properties of the spinal cord that are essential to maintaining neurotransmission can be impaired after the injury. Therefore, electrophysiological evaluation is becoming an important indicator of the injury extent or the therapeutic outcomes by reflecting the potential propagation of neural pathways. On the other hand, the repair of damaged nerves is one of the main goals of spinal cord injury treatment. Growing research interest has been concentrated on developing effective therapeutic solutions t

Complex memories induced by intracranial electrical brain stimulation are related to complex networks.

The precise and fleeting moment of rich recollection triggered by an environmental cue is difficult to reproduce in the lab. However, epilepsy patients can experience sudden reminiscences after intracranial electrical brain stimulation (EBS). In these cases, the transient brain state related to the activation of the engram and its conscious perception can be recorded using intracerebral EEG (iEEG). We collected various EBS-induced reminiscences for iEEG analysis, classifying them as follows: no or weak details (familiarity); moderate details and context (semantic and personal semantic memories

Adapting spatiotemporal gait symmetry to functional electrical stimulation during treadmill walking.

Individuals with neurological impairments often exhibit asymmetrical gait patterns. This study explored the potential of using functional electrical stimulation (FES) as a perturbation method during treadmill walking to promote gait symmetry adaptation by investigating whether the FES perturbation could induce gait adaptation concerning spatial and temporal gait symmetry in healthy subjects. In the FES perturbation, both legs received electrical pulses at the same period as the subjects' initial stride duration, and the temporal gap between the two pulses for each leg was manipulated over a 7-

Scalp acupuncture guidance for identifying the optimal site for transcranial electrical stimulation of the hand.

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) often targets the EEG-guided C3/C4 area that may not accurately represent M1 for hand muscles. This study aimed to determine if the neuroanatomy-based scalp acupuncture-guided site (AC) was a more effective spot than the C3 site for neuromodulation. Fifteen healthy subjects received one 20-minute session of high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (HD-tACS) intervention (20 Hz at 2 mA) at the AC or C3 sites randomly with a 1-week washout period. Subjects performed ball-squeezing exercises with the dominant hand during the HD-tACS in

Electrical stimulation as an adjunctive therapy for diabetic ulcers: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Diabetic ulcers are chronic wounds that are notoriously difficult to treat, leading to significant physical and psychological distress and increased healthcare costs. Their multifactorial aetiology necessitates long-term interdisciplinary collaboration and various complementary treatment measures. While numerous studies suggest that electrical stimulation (ES) positively impacts diabetic ulcer healing, the robustness and consistency of these findings require further evaluation to optimize clinical application. We searched databases including PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science

The Clinical Management of Electrical Stimulation Therapies in the Rehabilitation of Individuals with Spinal Cord Injuries.

Background: People with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) often have trouble remaining active because of paralysis. In the past, exercise recommendations focused on the non-paralyzed muscles in the arms, which provides limited benefits. However, recent studies show that electrical stimulation can help engage the paralyzed extremities, expanding the available muscle mass for exercise. Methods: The authors provide an evidence-based approach using expertise from diverse fields, supplemented by evidence from key studies toward the management of electrical stimulation therapies in individuals with SCIs.

Refining and in-situ growth of polyaniline endows the cellulose fibers with electrical stimulation sterilization.

Bacteria and virus infections have posed a great threat to public health and personnel safety. For realizing rapid sterilization of the bacteria and virus, electrical stimulation sterilization was adopted to endow cellulose fibers with instantaneous antibacterial and antiviral properties. In the proposed strategy, the fiber is fluffed by mechanical refining, and then by means of the hydrogen bond between hydroxyl and aniline, the polyaniline (PANI) directionally grows vertically along the fine fibers via in-situ oxidative polymerization. Benefiting from the conductive polyaniline nanorod array
