Classification of human breast cysts according to electrolyte and androgen conjugate composition.

One hundred human breast cyst fluids have been analysed for sodium (Na+), potassium (K+) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA) sulphate. Concentrations varied greatly between individual cyst fluids, Na+ from 20 to 185 mmol/l, K+ from 5 to 160 mmol/l and DHA-sulphate from 1.5 to 87 mumol/l. Analysis of the inter-relationships between Na+, K+ and DHA sulphate revealed two major sub-populations of cyst fluids--one group in which Na+ levels were markedly in excess of K+ and DHA sulphate concentrations were low and the other in which K+ was the predominant cation and DHA sulphate concentrations were hig

Treatment of 242 neonates with dehydrating diarrhea with an oral glucose-electrolyte solution.

Two hundred thirty-four of 242 neonates (96.7%) with a mean dehydration of 5.1% body weight were rehydrated with a glucose-electrolyte solution given orally in an average time of 7 44 hours. Eight (3.3%) neonates required intravenous fluid therapy. Emesis was not an obstacle for complete oral rehydration. Hypernatremia, hyponatremia, and acidosis present on admission were corrected within a few hours. Oral rehydration is an entirely satisfactory choice for treatment of uncomplicated dehydration in neonates.

Cystic fibrosis presenting with chronic electrolyte depletion, metabolic alkalosis and hyperaldosteronism.

A five month old infant who presented with failure to thrive and was found to have severe electrolyte depletion, metabolic alkalosis and hyperaldosteronism is described. The diagnosis of cystic fibrosis was made by demonstrating abnormal sweat electrolytes and pancreatic insufficiency. It is important to exclude cystic fibrosis in any infant presenting with this biochemical abnormality.

Modelling of electrolyte transport in renal and intestinal epithelia. Implications for transport defects.

Epithelia can be classified as "leaky" and "tight epithelia" due to their conductive properties and their modes of solute transport. Both the proximal segment of the nephron and the intestinal tract are "leaky" whereas the distal nephron and the colon are "tight". Consequently, inborn errors and exogenous disorders of solute transport often involve both the proximal tubule and the small intestine. In addition, effects on ion and water transport in the distal nephron closely resemble those in the large intestine. Models of solute transport in leaky and tight epithelia are presented employing po

Ultrastructural evidence for remodelling in a central noradrenergic pathway following electrolytic lesioning.

Electrolytic lesions were carried out in the medial hypothalamus of adult rats to study remodelling responses in a central noradrenergic pathway, the medial forebrain bundle. Four days, two weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks post-lesion, the animals were perfused and processed for correlated fluorescence microscopic (FM) and electron microscopic (EM) study. FM evaluation 4 days post-lesion showed that, compared with control preparations, catecholaminergic fibers became thick, distorted and intensely fluorescent. With increasing survival times the caliber of these fibers became finer and fluorescence i

The action of physalaemin on electrolyte excretion by the mandibular and sublingual salivary glands of the rat.

The effect of physalaemin, an undecapeptide belonging to a family known collectively as the tachykinins, on water and electrolyte excretion of the mandibular and sublingual salivary glands of the rat has been investigated and compared to that of acetylcholine. Drugs were administered intravenously or by close-arterial infusion. Physalaemin is a powerful stimulant of fluid secretion by both glands although less potent than acetylcholine. The Na and K excretion patterns in physalaemin-evoked saliva resembled, but were by no means identical to those evoked by acetylcholine and other parasympathom

[Mechanism of the change in energy and electrolyte metabolism in the respiratory musculature in experimental botulism].

Distinct decrease in concentrations of creatine phosphate and K+ was observed in various respiratory muscles of cat in generalized botulism, accompanied by the syndrom of asphyxia. Content of glycogen and Na+ was unaltered in these cases. In local botulinic paralysis concentrations of creatine phosphate, glycogen and K+ were decreased in the respiratory muscles. Accumulation of Na+ was observed in diaphragm and intercostal muscles. Content of K+ and creatine phosphate was partially restored in respiratory muscles after intraperitoneal administration of guanidine HCl/50 mg/kg of body weight/.

Influence of physiologic hyperglucagonemia on urinary glucose, nitrogen, and electrolyte excretion in diabetes.

To evaluate the effect of physiologic hyperglucagonemia on nitrogen and glucose metabolism and on urinary electrolyte excretion, pancreatic glucagon was administered as a continuous 3-day infusion to three adult-onset non-insulin-dependent diabetics and two insulin-treated juvenile diabetics while on a constant dietary intake. The glucagon infusion resulted in increases in plasma glucagon which were 4-6 fold greater than control values. Despite prolonged hyperglucagonemia, urinary glucose excretion was unchanged. Similarly, urinary urea nitrogen and total nitrogen excretion were not altered by

Effect of serotonin on water and electrolyte transport in the in vivo rabbit small intestine.

The influence of intravenously administered serotonin on water and electrolyte fluxes in the in vivo rabbit jejunum and ileum was examined. Animals were divided into four groups: (1) those receiving saline intravenously while a glucose-free isotonic saline solution perfused the jejunum and ileum; (2) serotonin given intravenously while glucose-free intestinal perfusate was used as in group 1; (3) intravenous saline given while a 10 mM glucose-isotonic saline solution perfused the jejunum and ileum; and (4) intravenous serotonin given while the intestinal perfusate was as in group 3. Serotonin

Electrolyte metabolism of muscle in the salt-losing form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

The study of metabolism of muscle electrolyte in children with the salt-losing form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia reveals two types of alterations. After admission and during initial therapy with salt and desoxycorticosterone, the changes are typical of those seen in experimental animals with adrenalectomy and excessive replacement therapy. Discontinuation of the sodium supplement after three months of therapy resulted in a return of muscle electrolyte values to normal. During the period of poor growth common to these patients a different pattern was observed. Sodium and water accumulated

Water and electrolyte abnormalities in the human brain after severe intrapartum asphyxia.

In a necropsy study of brain water, sodium, and potassium concentrations is newborn infants, abnormalities were found in 10 out of 16 cases who were severely asphyxiated at birth. It is concluded that, although frank cerebral cortical necrosis is not often recognizable in perinatal deaths, early anoxic-ischaemic cerebral damage is frequent after intrapartum asphyxia. Diffuse cerebral swelling was associated with marked electrolyte disturbances and may be regarded as a feature of anoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy in asphyxiated newborn infants.
