Validity of Administrative ICD-10 Diagnosis Codes for Ventricular Arrhythmia and Cardiac Arrest in a French University Hospital.

PURPOSE: Drug-induced QT interval prolongation increases the risk of ventricular arrhythmias and cardiac arrest. Assessing these outcomes in electronic health databases and evaluating their association with drug exposure requires prior validation of administrative diagnostic codes. This study aimed to evaluate the positive predictive value (PPV) of International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10) codes for ventricular arrhythmias and cardiac arrest in the French hospital discharge summary database (Programme de Médicalisation des Systèmes d'Information (PMSI)). METHODS: In a r

Beyond the guidelines: challenges, controversies, and unanswered questions.

Transgender and gender-nonconforming youth have unique medical and psychosocial needs that frequently go unmet. For youth who wish to have their physical appearance congruent with their gender identity, treatment guidelines are available that advocate the use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues (puberty blockers) and cross-sex hormone regimens. Although medical transition was once considered highly controversial, there is a mounting body of evidence that providing a supportive and affirming environment, as well as appropriate medical intervention, results in improved health outc

Rule-based clinician-developed programmes can facilitate haemodialysis clinical workflows.

There are routine hospital workflows that are not addressed by certain institutional electronic medical records, including the detection of patients requiring haemodialysis who are admitted under non-nephrology services. In this study, the feasibility and performance of a clinician-developed automated haemodialysis patient finder was evaluated. The programme ran with zero downtime for 6 months and had zero false negatives or false positives. This work demonstrates the potential benefits that may be gained when clinicians can meaningfully alter electronic clinical workflows.

Machine learning prediction algorithms for 2- , 5- and 10-year risk of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and dementia at age 65: a study using medical records from France and the UK General Practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Leveraging machine learning on electronic health records offers a promising method for early identification of individuals at risk for dementia and neurodegenerative diseases. Current risk algorithms heavily rely on age, highlighting the need for alternative models with strong predictive power, especially at age 65, a crucial time for early screening and prevention. METHODS: This prospective study analyzed electronic health records (EHR) from 76,427 adults (age 65, 52.1% women) using the THIN database. A general risk algorithm for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and deme

Effects of Sterilization on Shape Memory Polyurethane Embolic Foam Devices.

Polyurethane shape memory polymer (SMP) foams have been developed for various embolic medical devices due to their unique properties in minimally invasive biomedical applications. These polyurethane materials can be stored in a secondary shape, from which they can recover their primary shape after exposure to an external stimulus, such as heat and water exposure. Tailored actuation temperatures of SMPs provide benefits for minimally invasive biomedical applications, but incur significant challenges for SMP-based medical device sterilization. Most sterilization methods require high temperatures

The application of medical informatics to the veterinary management programs at companion animal practices in Alberta, Canada: a case study.

Companion animals closely share their domestic environment with people and have the potential to, act as sources of zoonotic diseases. They also have the potential to be sentinels of infectious and noninfectious, diseases. With the exception of rabies, there has been minimal ongoing surveillance of, companion animals in Canada. We developed customized data extraction software, the University of, Calgary Data Extraction Program (UCDEP), to automatically extract and warehouse the electronic, medical records (EMR) from participating private veterinary practices to make them available for, disease
