Intestinal duplication is a rare congenital anomaly; nonetheless, it comprises more than half of all alimentary duplication disorders. Our case report describes the hemorrhagic sequelae of this entity with surgical and pathologic findings. A review of anatomical classification, embryology, and natural history of duplication cyst follows; differentiating characteristics of duplication cyst versus Meckel's diverticulum are outlined. Intestinal duplication cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of GI bleeding, especially in children.

The embryologic origin of fistulous communications between a coronary artery and the pulmonary artery has traditionally been explained as the persistence of an immature supernumerary coronary artery with its origin in the pulmonary trunk. Although this hypothesis is consistent with the occurrence of the termination of the fistula in the posterior sinus of the pulmonary artery, it does not completely explain several morphologic and physiologic aspects. In this report, we present a case illustrating the classic anatomic features of left anterior descending artery to pulmonary artery fistulas and

There is now more or less general agreement how to classify and how to work out the development of symmetrical malformations of the female genital tract. On the other hand, asymmetrical malformations, as well as abnormalities of the development of the cervix and the isthmus are only rarely written about in the literature. It has not yet been possible to draw up a system to display the physiopathology and the embryology of these malformations. We here report a rare case of atresia of the cervix and isthmus as well as a pseudo unicornous uterus. This case should take its place as a piece in the …

Two specimens of laryngeal atresia were studied. In the first case stenosis was hard due to noncanalization of the anterior cricoid cartilage. In the second case there was a soft stenosis from limited canalization of the endoluminal soft tissue. Additionally, the first case had a posterior cleft with a persistent pharyngotracheal duct. The stenotic soft-tissue elements in both cases contained striated muscle fibers that interdigitated across the midline. The mucosa on the inferior surface of the hard stenosis was grossly thickened and contained large mucous glands. The embryologic significance

A case of primary adenocarcinoma of the umbilicus is reported along with a review of the literature and discussion of possible origins of glandular tissue within this area. Multiple connections are present within the umbilicus (vascular, lymphatic, and embryologic) that may give this area access to metastatic lesions. The primary tumors may originate within the usual umbilical tissue (skin and soft tissue). Glands that are not normally present in the region of the umbilicus rarely develop malignant neoplasms. As postulated, glandular tissue may arise either as metaplasia from squamous epitheli

A fetal posterior cerebral artery (FPCA) is an anatomic variant in which the posterior cerebral artery is an embryological derivative of the internal carotid artery. Although most cases of ischemic strokes in patients with FPCAs involve embolic infarcts, emergent large vessel occlusion of a FPCA is extremely rare. We present two cases of successful endovascular intervention for emergent occlusion of a FPCA, one of which is only the second reported case of a mechanical thrombectomy of a FPCA. We review the embryology of FPCA, the controversy regarding its association with cerebral infarcts, and…

Paraduodenal hernia is a rare internal congenital hernia due to an embryological abnormality. It is often associated with non-specific abdominal symptoms. In this report the authors describe the case of a woman who was referred to the emergency ward for intestinal obstruction. Preliminary examinations (x-ray and computed tomography scan) failed to yield a clear diagnosis. The patient underwent a surgical procedure and a left paraduodenal hernia was diagnosed. A sound knowledge of embryological anatomy is essential for safe, effective surgical treatment of such internal hernias. A review of the

Congenital malformations of the oral cavity may involve the lips, jaws, hard palate, floor of mouth, and anterior two thirds of the tongue. These malformations may be the product of errors in embryogenesis or the result of intrauterine events disturbing embryonic and fetal growth. This article begins with a review of the pertinent embryologic development of these structures. After reviewing the normal embryology, specific malformations are described. Recommended management follows the brief description of each malformation. An attempt is made to point out where these malformations deviate from…

Mentosternal fistula is a very rare entity. 70 cases had been reported in the French literature up until 1984. Mentosternal fistula is very different from cyst and fistula of the thyroglossal duct. There is no consensus concerning both pathologically and embryologically, the ethiopathogenesis of mentosternal fistula, but the most widely accepted embryological theory seems to be inclusion of ecto or endodemic material at the time of fusion of the branchial tissues in the cervical midline. Clinical features, in the complete form, are very typical and must be distinguished from thyroglossal duct

Franklin Mall (1862-1917) made fundamental discoveries in the embryology of malrotation and the development of the diaphragm, pathological conditions basic to pediatric surgery. As the inaugural professor of anatomy at the new Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine when it opened in 1893, Mall was among the first fulltime researchers in basic medical science in American medical schools, a new role that came to characterize the modern academic medical center.

Congenital hand anomalies have a wide range of presentations and functional consequences. Understanding and treatment of these deformities require an understanding of embryology of upper-extremity development. In this report, common anomalies of the hand and upper extremity have been reviewed according to the International Federation for Societies for Surgery of the Hand classification system. We examine the epidemiology, etiology, functional consequences, and current treatments available for each anomaly.

We present a very rare cardiac lesion where we found a combination of abnormal pulmonary venous drainage and left-sided obstructive lesions. This case gives new insight into the complex malformation of the heart, raising questions about cardiac embryology and timing of interfering events. Here we describe the lesion for the first time and review the related literature. To the best of our knowledge, this combination has never been reported.

This article describes an extremely rare case, encountered in the anatomy laboratory, of a skull base found to have duplication of both occipital condyles. In addition, this specimen was noted to have a large bony excrescence near the basion, a small third occipital condyle, a left paracondylar process, elongation of the right styloid process, and a bony septation of both hypoglossal canals. The embryology and clinical implications are discussed.

We report the case of a newborn, who developed intestinal obstruction soon after birth. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a congenital vascular band anomaly extending from the antimesenteric border of the terminal ileum to the gallbladder in association with ileal atresia. Surgical intervention was performed for correction of the disorder. A review of the embryology and congenital vascular bands is presented together with discussion as to possible etiopathogenesis leading to small bowel atresia.

Disorders of the first branchial cleft are rare and often present difficulties in diagnosis. A case is reported that presented with the clinical and histological features of cholesteatoma. The embryology, diagnosis and treatment of branchial arch defects are also reviewed. The case highlights the fact that a high index of suspicion should be aroused for patients with a discharging ear in the presence of an intact tympanic membrane.

The aim of this study is to report two similar cases with an "accessory biliary duct" confluent to the main pancreatic duct. There was pancreatic juice inside the "gallbladder". There was no connection between "accessory biliary duct" and intra or extrahepatic biliary ducts. This anomalous junction of the "cystic duct" and the main pancreatic duct may be explained by embryology. These two cases could be the first human "pancreatic" bladders reported.

A disturbance during the embryology of tooth formation of the seven-year-old girl presented in this case resulted in her having the unusual combination of nearly a complete complement of primary teeth but anodontia of the permanent dentition. It could not be determined if this child had any of the many syndromes or conditions characterized by missing teeth. Clinical characteristics and management of this case are described.

An unusual combination of first and second arch anomlies is presented. This has resulted in absent middle and external ears with gross naso- and oropharyngeal defects. A brief reference is made to the embryology of this region to explain the anatomical and functional defects. Vascular abnormality during the peri-gestational period is suggested as a possible cause and a conservative line of treatment has been followed with good result.
