Trends in ipecac use: a survey of poison center staff.

The steady decline in syrup of ipecac used by poisoned victims from a peak of 15% in 1985 to 2.3% in 1995 is of concern. A survey compared syrup of ipecac use by CSPI, ABAT, and ABMT/ACMT members as the first response decontamination. The survey asked CSPI, ABAT, and ABMT/ACMT members their professional opinion on the use of syrup of ipecac in a potentially toxic ingestion. The scenario was "Your 2-y-old child/grandchild accidentally ingested a potentially lethal dose of poison (i.e. colchicine) 5 min ago and you have syrup of ipecac at home. Would you consider using it?" Of the 171 CSPI's who

Central mechanisms for apomorphine-induced emesis in the dog.

In order to investigate whether different receptor populations mediate emesis induced by intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) and intravenous (i.v.) apomorphine, adult beagle dogs were tested with various doses of the drug with and without central and peripheral pretreatment with the dopamine antagonist sulpiride. The threshold dose of apomorphine to induce emesis by i.c.v. injections was 30-50 times lower than via the i.v. route, while the response latencies after i.c.v. administration were typically longer and the number of bouts of vomiting greater. I.v. pretreatment with sulpiride was more eff

Acute chromium poisoning in a 2 year old child.

Sodium dichromate ingestion in children is uncommon and potentially lethal. The most appropriate management is uncertain because of the lack of sound data contained in the few reports of successfully treated patients. Immediate treatment should include urgent induction of emesis, administration of ascorbic acid as an antidote, followed by supportive treatment.

Studies on vomitory effect of some acridine compounds.

Vomitory effect of 16 chosen acridine derivatives was observed on pigeons. The expected effect of the preparations as well as their interaction with, causing vomiting lobeline were considered. Two groups were distinguished: 1) preparations which alone caused vomitory reaction (C-283, C-410, C-541, C-609, C-684, C-702, C-829, C-835, C-846, C-1006 and C-1020). 2) Preparations which caused this effect while combined with a subthreshold dose of lobeline (C-429, C-516, C-666, C-857 and C-1005). Dependence of the effects on chemical structure and pharmacological activity of the compounds is discusse

The Chikungunya virus: An emerging US pathogen.

BACKGROUND: The Chikungunya (CHIK) virus was recently reported by the CDC to have spread to the United States. We report an early documented … he responded well to supportive care, including anti-inflammatories, intravenous hydration and anti-emetics. RESULTS: His condition improved within two days and he was ultimately discharged home. CONCLUSIONS: Manifestations of CHIK can be similar to Dengue fever, which is transmitted by the same species of mosquito, and occasionally as a co-infection. C …

Pharmacophores for ligand recognition and activation/inactivation of the cannabinoid receptors.

The cannabinoid CB(1) and CB(2) receptors belong to the Class A, rhodopsin-like family of G protein-coupled receptors. Antagonists for each receptor sub-type, as well as four structural classes of agonists that bind to both receptors, have been identified. An extensive amount of SAR has been developed for agonists and antagonists that bind at CB1, while the SAR of CB2 ligands is only now emerging in the literature. Cannabinoid agonists have been suggested to have potential therapeutic uses as appetite stimulants, analgesics, anti-emetics, anti-diarrheals, anti-spasmodics, tumor anti-proliferat…

[Acute pancreatitis in dogs. A literature study].

The aetiology of acute pancreatitis in dogs is rather obscure. Although experimental studies may reveal a number of causative factors, an ae … Complete withdrawal of food and water is the most important factor. Intravenous fluid therapy, anti-emetics, analgesics and possibly antibiotics are the main adjuncts to treatment. The prognosis will largely depend on the stage of the disease and the extent to which complications have occurred at the time.

Gastrointestinal decontamination in the emergency department.

Pediatric poisoning is a problem commonly encountered in the emergency department. After stabilization of airway, breathing, and circulation, one of the goals of treatment is decontamination in order to limit poison absorption and the resulting systemic toxicity. Decontamination modalities include gastric emptying (ipecac and gastric lavage), inhibiting absorption (activated charcoal), and catharsis (sorbital, magnesium citrate, and whole bowel irrigation). Each modality is discussed. Choice of modality by the practitioner must be individualized to each patient's situation.
