[Analysis of the Reasons for the Inconsistent Opinions on the Mental Disability Assessments].

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the factors contributing to inconsistent opinions on assessments of mental disability degrees caused by traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 50 cases of re-assessment of mental disability caused by TBI at Forensic Medicine Center of Sun Yat-sen University from 2018 to 2019. General demographic information of the assessed individuals, TBI conditions, and initial and re-assessment opinions were collected. Descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation analysis and generalized estimating equations were used to analyze the differenc

Mediators and Effect Modifiers of the Causal Pathway Between Child Exposure to Domestic Violence and Internalizing Behaviors Among Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Literature Review.

Childhood exposure to domestic violence (DV) can lead to mental health problems including internalizing symptoms. This systematic literature … le of studies were second reviewed by authors. One individual-level mediator was identified, namely emotional intelligence, and two effect modifiers were identified: relational victimization and participation in extracurricular activities. Familial mediators included maladaptive parenting and parenting stress, while effect modifiers included positive parenting (maternal …

Neuroanatomical correlates of behavioral rating versus performance measures of working memory in typically developing children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The frequent lack of correspondence between performance and observational measures of executive functioning, including working memory, has raised questions about the validity of the observational measures. This study was conducted to investigate sources of this discrepancy through correlation of volumetric and cortical thickness (CT) neuroimaging values with performance and questionnaire measures of working memory (WM). METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the NIH MRI Study of Normal Brain Development (Volumes, N= 347, 54.3% female; CT, N= 350, 54.6% female; age range: 6 to 16.9 y

Williams syndrome: a relationship between genetics, brain morphology and behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Genetically Williams syndrome (WS) promises to provide essential insight into the pathophysiology of cortical development because its ∼28 deleted genes are crucial for cortical neuronal migration and maturation. Phenotypically, WS is one of the most puzzling childhood neurodevelopmental disorders affecting most intellectual deficiencies (i.e. low-moderate intelligence quotient, visuospatial deficits) yet relatively preserving what is uniquely human (i.e. language and social-emotional cognition). Therefore, WS provides a privileged setting for investigating the relationship between

X-linked genes and mental functioning.

The X-chromosome has played a crucial role in the development of sexually selected characteristics for over 300 million years. During that time it has accumulated a disproportionate number of genes concerned with mental functions. Evidence is emerging, from studies of both humans and mice, for a general influence upon intelligence (as indicated by the large number of X-linked mental retardation syndromes). In addition, there is evidence for relatively specific effects of X-linked genes on social-cognition and emotional regulation. Sexually dimorphic processes could be influenced by several mec

Evaluation of the efficacy of piracetam in treating information processing, reading and writing disorders in dyslexic children.

Piracetam, a new class of drug (nootropil) thought to enhance specific cognitive skills, was given in a 3300 mg daily dose to half of a group of fifty-five dyslexic boys aged 8-13 years, in a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The other half of the subjects received placebo. All subjects met the following criteria: normal intelligence, normal educational opportunities, no severe emotional problems, no neurological handicaps, good physical health, not taking other psychotropic medication, and scoring at least one and one half years below their mental age equivalent on the Gilmore

Design and Formative Evaluation of a Virtual Voice-Based Coach for Problem-solving Treatment: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence has provided new opportunities for human interactions with technology for the practice of medicine. Among the recent artificial intelligence innovations, personal voice assistants have been broadly adopted. This highlights their potential for health care-related applications such as behavioral counseling to promote healthy lifestyle habits and emotional well-being. However, the use of voice-based applications for behavioral therapy has not been previously evaluated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to conduct a formative user evaluation of Lumen, a virtual voice

Spontaneous but not explicit processing of positive sentences impaired in Asperger's syndrome: pupillometric evidence.

Emotional prosody provides important cues for understanding the emotions of others in every day communication. Asperger's syndrome (AS) is a developmental disorder characterised by pronounced deficits in socio-emotional communication, including difficulties in the domain of prosody processing. We measured pupillary responses as an index of emotional prosodic processing when 15 participants with AS and 19 non-clinical control participants listened to positive, negative and neutral prosodic sentences. This occurred under a spontaneous and an explicit task instruction. In the explicit processing

Unique associations between young adult men's emotional functioning and their body dissatisfaction and disordered eating.

Research on emotional functioning, body dissatisfaction, and disordered eating in males is predominated by studies of negative affect and emotion regulation. Other aspects of emotional functioning, namely emotion recognition and attentional biases toward emotional stimuli, have received little empirical attention. The present study investigated the unique associations between different aspects of men's emotional functioning and their disordered eating attitudes, muscularity dissatisfaction, and body fat dissatisfaction. Results from 132 male undergraduates showed that muscularity dissatisfacti

Direct assessment of children's social-emotional comprehension.

Social-emotional comprehension includes the ability to encode, interpret, and reason about social-emotional information. The better developed children's social-emotional comprehension, the more positive their social interactions and the better their peer relationships. Many clinical tools exist to assess children's social behavior. In contrast, fewer clinically interpretable tools are available to assess children's social-emotional comprehension. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of a group of direct assessments of social-emotional comprehension. Scores on these assessments refl

Neural mechanisms of emotion regulation in childhood anxiety.

BACKGROUND: The present study was designed to examine the cortical processes that mediate cognitive regulation in response to emotion-eliciting stimuli in anxious children. METHODS: Electroencephalographic (EEG) activity was recorded from clinically anxious children (n = 29) and typically developing children (n = 34). Event-related potential components were recorded while children performed a go/no-go task using facial stimuli depicting angry, calm, and happy expressions. RESULTS: Anxious children had significantly greater posterior P1 and frontal N2 amplitudes, components associated with at

Sexual violence and associated factors among women in HIV discordant and concordant relationships in Uganda.

HIV serodiscordance is a sexual partnership in which one partner is infected with HIV while the other is not. Managing emotional and sexual intimacy in HIV serodiscordant unions can be difficult due to concerns about HIV transmission and the challenge of initiating and maintaining safe sex. In situations where couples are jointly aware of their HIV status, women in serodiscordant unions may face increased risk of partner violence. We conducted an investigation to assess risk factors for HIV serodiscordance and determine if HIV serodiscordance is associated with incident sexual violence among a

Deficits in the ability to recognize one's own affects and those of others: associations with neurocognition, symptoms and sexual trauma among persons with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

While many with schizophrenia experience deficits in metacognition it is unclear whether those deficits are related to other features of illness. To explore this issue, the current study classified participants with schizophrenia as possessing a deficit in both awareness of their own emotions and those of others (n=30), aware of their own emotions but unaware of the emotions of others (n=50) and aware of their own emotions and of other's emotions (n=17). Groups were compared on assessments of neurocognitive function, symptoms, and history of sexual trauma. ANCOVA controlling for education foun

Social cognition moderates the influence of child physical abuse on inpatient psychiatric rehabilitation.

Moderating effects of social cognition in the relationship between the severity of history of child physical abuse (CPA) and social functioning were examined using 12-month longitudinal data among 143 participants with severe mental illness (SMI) in an inpatient psychiatric rehabilitation program. The adverse effects of the severity of history of CPA on social functioning were compensated for by greater social inference and lower external locus of control. Specifically, despite the severity of history of CPA, individuals with intact or greater social inference showed greater social functioning

Recognition of 'fortune of others' emotions in Asperger syndrome and high functioning autism.

'Fortune of others' emotions, such as envy and gloating over the other's misfortune, are complex emotions experienced in situations where events are presumed to be desirable or undesirable for another person. The present paper explores the notion that individuals with AS and HFA are impaired in understanding of envy and gloating. We tested the ability of adults with AS/HFA to understand envy and gloating and compared their performance to that of age-matched healthy controls. The 'fortune of others' emotion task and an additional theory-of-mind (ToM) task were based on a task designed to assess

Understanding of emotional experience in autism: insights from the personal accounts of high-functioning children with autism.

In this study, the authors investigate emotional understanding in autism through a discourse analytic framework to provide a window into children's strategies for interpreting emotional versus nonemotional encounters and consider the implications for the mechanisms underlying emotional understanding in typical development. Accounts were analyzed for thematic content and discourse structure. Whereas high-functioning children with autism were able to discuss contextually appropriate accounts of simple emotions, their strategies for interpreting all types of emotional (but not nonemotional) exper
