The Impact of Neuroimmune Alterations in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) involves a complex interplay of both genetic and environmental risk factors, with immune alterations and synaptic connection deficiency in early life. In the past decade, studies of ASD have substantially increased, in both humans and animal models. Immunological imbalance (including autoimmunity) has been proposed as a major etiological component in ASD, taking into account increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines observed in postmortem brain from patients, as well as autoantibody production. Also, epidemiological studies have established a correlation of

Nutrient-restricted fetus and the cardio-renal connection in hypertensive offspring.

A suboptimal intrauterine environment has a number of deleterious effects on fetal development and postpartum health outcomes. Epidemiological studies on several human populations have linked socioeconomic status and low birth weight to an increased incidence of diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. A growing number of experimental studies in a variety of animal models demonstrate that maternal stressors, such as nutrition and reduced uterine perfusion, affect the intrauterine milieu and result in increased blood pressure in offspring. Several mechanisms

How to use sequence analysis for life course epidemiology? An example on HIV-positive Sub-Saharan migrants in France.

BACKGROUND: Life course epidemiology is now an established field in social epidemiology; in sociodemography, the quantitative analysis of biographies recently experienced significant trend from event history analysis to sequence analysis. The purpose of this article is to introduce and adapt this methodology to a social epidemiology question, taking the example of the impact of HIV diagnosis on Sub-Saharan migrants' residential trajectories in the Paris region. METHODS: The sample consists of 640 migrants born in Sub-Saharan Africa receiving HIV care. They were interviewed in healthcare facil

Systematic literature review of the epidemiology of glycogen storage disease type 1a.

Glycogen storage disease (GSD) type 1a is an inherited autosomal recessive metabolic disease caused by a deficiency in glucose-6-phosphatase activity. The objectives of this research were to systematically review the published literature on the epidemiology of GSD 1a and to assess the performance of reported epidemiology measures in a simulation model. In this systematic literature review 2,539 record titles and abstracts were screened. Of these, only 11 studies contained relevant data on GSD 1a disease epidemiology. Reported disease frequency ranged from 0.085/100,000 to 10.3/100,000 newborns

Physical abuse of children as a public health problem.

This review of the physical abuse of children by their parents or other adults is an attempt to present the epidemiological data on this subject in terms of a model which will facilitate public health intervention. Child abuse is a public health problem of sizable proportions in many nations. Studies of the problem have been largely concentrated in the United States, but the problem has also been of concern in many other nations throughout the world. Epidemiological findings are summarized, and a number of the major sociological and psychiatric theories of child abuse are discussed. A model of

A systematic review of machine learning approaches to bovine tuberculosis in cattle.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a chronic zoonotic disease, caused by Mycobacterium bovis which despite years of eradication attempts, is still prevalent globally. Machine learning (ML), a technology allowing for computerised discovery of patterns in data, has been applied widely to the field of epidemiology for decades, more recently venturing into the detection and diagnosis of bTB with varying success. This systematic review was performed to identify the existing published research utilising ML with bTB datasets oriented directly or indirectly around the identification of infected animals or i

Stage- and sex-specific associations of prenatal individual and mixed metals exposure with adiposity peak and adiposity rebound among children: a prospective birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Adiposity peak (AP) and adiposity rebound (AR) are key indicators of early childhood growth, which are closely related to obesity, premature puberty, and metabolic abnormalities. Epidemiological studies have shown that prenatal metal exposure is linked to obesity in children. However, studies concerning the association of metals during pregnancy with AP and AR in children are scarce. METHODS: We measured the concentration of 17 serum metal elements including aluminum (Al), vanadium, manganese (Mn), iron, cobalt (Co), nickel, copper, zinc, selenium, cadmium, barium (Ba), thallium (

Maternal prenatal mercury exposure from rice and its association with newborn neurobehavioral development.

Methylmercury (MeHg) exposure is a global environmental concern. Rice-derived MeHg exposure poses a potential neurodevelopmental risk in inland populations with low fish intake, yet epidemiological evidence remains scarce. This representative mother-infant cohort study was conducted in a mercury mining area in China, involving 420 mother-infant pairs, of which 206 were from mercury-exposed regions and 214 were from control regions. It was first found that the median total mercury and methylmercury levels in rice from mercury-exposed areas (11.19 ng/g and 5.07 ng/g) were significantly higher th

Helicobacter pylori: Does Gastritis Prevent Colitis?

BACKGROUND: Since its discovery in the early 1980s, Helicobacter pylori has been linked to a variety of gastric and extragastric diseases. Chronic infection with H. pylori causes histologically evident gastritis in all colonized individuals and is the predominant risk factor for gastric and duodenal ulcers as well as gastric adenocarcinoma. However, increasingly robust experimental and epidemiological evidence suggests that H. pylori may at the same time be beneficial to its carriers, as it efficiently prevents allergic disorders and chronic inflammatory conditions. The purpose of this review

Multifactorial theory applied to the neurotoxicity of paraquat and paraquat-induced mechanisms of developing Parkinson's disease.

Laboratory studies involving repeated exposure to paraquat (PQ) in different animal models can induce many of the pathological features of Parkinson's disease (PD), such as the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the nigrostriatal dopamine system. Epidemiological studies identify an increased risk of developing PD in human populations living in areas where PQ exposure is likely to occur and among workers lacking appropriate protective equipment. The mechanisms involved in developing PD may not be due to any single cause, but rather a multifactorial situation may exist where PQ exposure may cause P

Toxicity of dipyridyl compounds and related compounds.

Five dipyridyl isomers, 2,2'-, 2,3'-, 2,4'-, 3,3'-, and 4,4'-dipyridyl, are products resulting from the pyrolytic degradation of tobacco products and degradation of the herbicide paraquat, and therefore may be present in the environment. In this article, the toxicological properties of these dipyridyl isomers in humans and animals are reviewed. Epidemiological studies suggest that cancerous skin lesions in workers involved in the manufacturing of paraquat may be associated with exposure to dipyridyl compounds. Experimental animal studies suggest that dipyridyl isomers may have several toxicolo

Myopia and models and mechanisms of refractive error control.

Myopia represents a failure of the normal process of emmetropization, which is essentially endogenous to the eye. Emmetropization involves defocus detection at the level of the amacrine and bipolar cells of the outer retina, diffusion of a signal or signals across the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid, and alteration of the scleral matrix, likely through modulation of proteoglycan synthesis. Elucidating and effectively bolstering the deficient steps in this regulatory pathway would mark a significant advance given myopia's tremendous impact. Clinical experience, longitudinal studies, epid

Epidemiological and molecular characterization of Rift Valley fever outbreak in livestock in Burundi, May - November 2022.

An outbreak of Rift Valley fever (RVF) was officially reported for the first time in Burundi on 10th May 2022. The outbreak originated in the northern provinces and progressively spread to other regions of the country. This study presents (i) epidemiological investigations that were carried out through a countrywide emergency response and (ii) the characterization of the genotype of the RVF virus that caused the outbreak through phylogenetic analyses. Field teams visited each affected farm, collected data on observed syndromes, species and number of animals affected, farm's locations, and herd

An overview of low back pain and occupational exposures to whole-body vibration and mechanical shocks.

This paper offers an overview of the relation of low back pain (LBP) to occupational exposures to whole-body vibration (WBV) and mechanical shocks. LBP is a condition of multifactorial origin and is a very common health problem in the general population. Among occupational risk factors, epidemiological studies of driving occupations have provided evidence for strong associations between LBP and occupational exposures to WBV and mechanical shocks. Since it is hard to separate the contribution of WBV exposure to disorders in the lower back from that of other individual, ergonomic or psychosocial

A latent factor panel approach to spatiotemporal causal inference.

Unmeasured confounding can severely bias causal effect estimates from spatiotemporal observational data, especially when the confounders do not vary smoothly in time and space. In this work, we develop a method for addressing unmeasured confounding in spatiotemporal contexts by building on models from the panel data literature and methods in multivariate causal inference. Our method is based on a factor confounding assumption, which posits that effects of unmeasured confounders on exposures and outcomes can be captured by a shared latent factor model. Factor confounding is sufficient to partia

Estimation of time-varying recovery and death rates from epidemiological data: A new approach.

The time-to-recovery or time-to-death for various infectious diseases can vary significantly among individuals, influenced by several factors such as demographic differences, immune strength, medical history, age, pre-existing conditions, and infection severity. To capture these variations, time-since-infection dependent recovery and death rates offer a detailed description of the epidemic. However, obtaining individual-level data to estimate these rates is challenging, while aggregate epidemiological data (such as the number of new infections, number of active cases, number of new recoveries,
