High efficiency of 70% isopropanol in reducing microbial contamination on healthcare workers' smartphone surfaces: a pre-post study in Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Poor cleaning practices for healthcare workers' mobile phones can promote microbial contamination, posing a latent risk of infections for patients. Despite widespread mobile phone use in healthcare environments, evidence on the effectiveness of disinfection methods in low and middle-income countries remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the disinfectant capacity of 70% isopropanol on the surface of healthcare workers' smartphones in a Peruvian hospital in 2023. METHODS: We designed a pre-post study to collect demographic, occupational, and phone usage information, along with

Evaluation of a hazardous drug surface contamination surveillance program in a large community hospital.

PURPOSE: Risks of occupational exposures to hazardous drugs (HDs) have been documented and identified as needing to be monitored. To decrease potential exposures in a community hospital, this project evaluated the impact of implementing a hazardous drug wipe sampling technology (BD HD Check system; BD, Franklin Lakes, NJ) and accompanying environmental procedures, risk level scoring assessment, and recordkeeping tools on identifying HD surface contamination. METHODS: The 16-week evaluation focused on HD wipe sampling of locations (25 sites) within a cleanroom suite and infusion areas at the l

Efficacy of a foamed disinfectant in reducing pathogen contamination in renovated inpatient in-room sinks: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hospital sinks are reservoirs for epidemiologically important pathogens (EIPs), yet practical, effective strategies for sustained decontamination are lacking. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial of 30 in-room sinks (15 intervention, 15 control) in a newly renovated hospital unit to evaluate the efficacy of a hydrogen peroxide/peracetic acid foamed disinfectant in reducing sink contamination. Intervention sinks received foamed disinfectant to sink drains three times weekly; control sinks underwent standard daily surface cleaning. Weekly sampling was performed from t

Personal stethoscope disinfection practices and bacterial contamination: A cross-sectional study at the University Hospital Emergency Department in Belgrade, Serbia.

BACKGROUND: A significant reduction in bacterial growth on stethoscope membranes has been noticed after performing daily disinfection. Nevertheless, disinfection is rarely performed. We aimed to assess self-reported stethoscope disinfection practices among medical doctors, detect bacterial contamination on personal stethoscopes, and estimate the effectiveness of 70% ethanol as a stethoscope disinfecting agent. METHODS: To determine stethoscope disinfection practices, participants filled out a questionnaire (N = 47), followed by providing stethoscopes for bacterial analysis. Differences in bac

A Multicenter Trial Demonstrating Presence or Absence of Bacterial Contamination at the Screw-Bone Interface Owing to Absence or Presence of Pedicle Screw Guard, Respectively, During Spinal Fusion.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective multicenter study. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess bacterial contamination in current practices of pedicle screw handling and comparing it to a novel method of using an intraoperative, sterile implant guard for screws. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Postoperative infections occur at the higher end of 2%-13%, as cited in the literature, and are underestimated due to various reasons in such publications. Despite concerns associated with vancomycin application immediately before closure, it is theoretically impossible to irrigate the screw-bone inte

Bacterial Cultures at the Time of Artificial Urinary Sphincter Revision Surgery in Clinically Uninfected Devices: A Contemporary Series.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the rate of bacterial colonization in artificial urinary sphincters during revision surgery for noninfectious etiologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated bacterial culture swab data on all explanted artificial urinary sphincter components (cuff, pump and reservoir) in patients who underwent revision surgery between February 2016 and July 2018. Those treated with revision for infection or erosion were excluded from study. Patient demographic variables were assessed to identify factors associated with colonization. RESULTS: Cultures were obtained from 200 components,

ZMapp Reinforces the Airway Mucosal Barrier Against Ebola Virus.

Filoviruses, including Ebola, have the potential to be transmitted via virus-laden droplets deposited onto mucus membranes. Protecting against such emerging pathogens will require understanding how they may transmit at mucosal surfaces and developing strategies to reinforce the airway mucus barrier. Here, we prepared Ebola pseudovirus (with Zaire strain glycoproteins) and used high-resolution multiple-particle tracking to track the motions of hundreds of individual pseudoviruses in fresh and undiluted human airway mucus isolated from extubated endotracheal tubes. We found that Ebola pseudoviru

A Pilot Study on the Efficacy of a Treatment Algorithm to Detoxify Dental Implant Surfaces Affected by Peri-implantitis.

This in vitro pilot study was performed to determine whether a treatment algorithm including mechanical debridement, followed by air powder abrasion with glycine, followed by citric acid conditioning with vigorous flushing of the surface with sterile water after each step, is capable of decontaminating an infected implant surface. A total of 14 dental implants that were deemed hopeless due to advanced peri-implantitis were extracted. Of these, 6 implants served as tests and had their exposed surfaces treated with the decontamination protocol, 6 served as untreated controls, and 2 were mechanic

Sterilization of implantable polymer-based medical devices: A review.

This review article is focused on the sterilization techniques used for polymer-based implantable medical devices as well as the regulatory aspects governing sterile medical devices. Polymeric materials are increasingly used in implantable devices due to their biodegradable and biocompatible nature. Patients and medical staff often prefer long-term implantable devices and these can be achieved using high molecular weight polymers. Sterilization of polymer-based implantable devices is critical. Since all implantable devices must be sterile, the effect of the sterilization method on the differen

Bacterial colonization of penile prosthesis after its withdrawal due to mechanical failure.

INTRODUCTION: Prosthetic surgery to treat erectile dysfunction has a risk of infection of up to 3%, but this risk can increase to 18% when the surgery involves replacement. This increased risk of infection is attributed to the bacterial colonization of the prosthesis during the initial surgery. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the presence of germs in the prosthesis that is withdrawn due to mechanical failure (not infection), as well as the surgical results and its progression. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A retrospective study was conducted of all replacements performed between 2013 and 2016 at a single cent

[Outbreaks related to contaminated duodenoscopes: causes and solutions].

Duodenoscopes for Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) are used for diagnostic and, presently predominantly, for minimally invasive therapeutic procedures involving the biliary tree and the pancreatic duct. In 2012, in the Erasmus MC in the Netherlands, a large outbreak of multidrug-resistant bacteria was caused by a contaminated duodenoscope; its design was such that thorough cleaning was not possible. Worldwide, an increasing number of outbreaks involving multidrug-resistant bacteria caused by contaminated duodenoscopes have been reported on. This raises the question whether

Disinfection of aircraft : Appropriate disinfectants and standard operating procedures for highly infectious diseases.

For infectious diseases caused by highly pathogenic agents (e. g., Ebola/Lassa fever virus, SARS-/MERS-CoV, pandemic influenza virus) which have the potential to spread over several continents within only a few days, international Health Protection Authorities have taken appropriate measures to limit the consequences of a possible spread. A crucial point in this context is the disinfection of an aircraft that had a passenger on board who is suspected of being infected with one of the mentioned diseases. Although, basic advice on hygiene and sanitation on board an aircraft is given by the World

Evaluation of the Sagittal Saw Blade as an Intraoperative Fomite During Diabetic Foot Surgery.

UNLABELLED: Surgical site infection is a major potential complication of all operative interventions, and the diabetic foot is particularly at risk for bacterial recontamination and infectious sequelae. The objective of this study was to identify whether the sagittal saw blade used during partial foot amputations and diabetic foot debridements carries the potential to serve as a bacterial fomite. We physically cultured the sagittal saw blade during 20 foot debridements involving the resection of bone in patients diagnosed with a diabetic foot infection. The culture was taken after the initial

Cross-contamination of clinical specimens with Bacillus anthracis during a laboratory proficiency test--Idaho, 2006.

On July 18, 2006, the Utah Department of Health notified epidemiologists at the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare that Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent for anthrax, had been isolated from a patient. On the same day, the Idaho epidemiologists were notified by the Idaho Bureau of Laboratories of a specimen from a second patient received for anthrax testing. The two reports resulted briefly in alerts to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and precautionary treatment of one of the patients for anthrax. Subsequent investigation revealed that, during July 2006, the Idaho Bureau of

The role of biofilms in otolaryngologic infections: update 2007.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Biofilms have been shown to play a role in otitis media, sinusitis, cholesteatoma, tonsillitis, adenoiditis, and device infections. This article is written to review recent advances in the field. RECENT FINDINGS: The role of biofilms in the persistence of chronic, mucosal-based ENT-related infections was first recognized in otitis media. Definitive proof was lacking until the demonstration of bacterial biofilms on the middle-ear mucosa of children, not only with chronic otitis media with effusion, but also with recurrent otitis media. Strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isola

Enzymatic detergent treatment protocol that reduces protease-resistant prion protein load and infectivity from surgical-steel monofilaments contaminated with a human-derived prion strain.

The unconventional nature of the infectious agent of prion diseases poses a challenge to conventional infection control methodologies. The extraneural tissue distribution of variant and sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease has increased concern regarding the risk of prion disease transmission via general surgical procedures and highlighted the need for decontamination procedures that can be incorporated into routine processing. In this study, the ability of preparations of enzymatic medical instrument cleaners to reduce the infectivity associated with a rodent-adapted strain of human prion disea

Disinfection of needleless catheter connectors and access ports with alcohol may not prevent microbial entry: the promise of a novel antiseptic-barrier cap.

BACKGROUND: Needleless valve connectors for vascular catheters are widely used throughout the United States because they reduce the risk of biohazardous injuries from needlesticks and exposure to bloodborne pathogens, such as human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus. Patients with long-term central venous catheters are at significant risk of acquiring catheter-related bloodstream infections caused by microbes that gain access through the connection between the administration set and the catheter or an injection port. Most healthcare practitioners wipe the membranous septum of the nee
