The AA. examined 36 uncomplicated ON (Optic neuritis) observed from 1-1-1970 to 31-12-1980. An ophthalmological, neurological, and electrophysiological test (VEP, SEP, BAER) is made on this patients from 1-1-1986 to 31-3-1986. The importance of the electrophysiological examination is evaluated to recognize subclinical Multiple Sclerosis.

A study was conducted in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) neonates to correlate structural damage to the central nervous system due to intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) with electrophysiological function of the lower auditory system as measured by brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP). BAEP testing of 61 VLBW neonates was completed at 36 weeks conceptional age. BAEP Wave III and V latencies significantly increased with increasing severity of ICH. Although significant at conventional levels (P less than 0.05), these correlations were of modest size. Furthermore, after adjusting for the effects of…

Twenty-five hyperlipidemic, neurologically and audiologically asymptomatic patients were compared to 20 normolipemic control subjects regarding different interpeak latency differences (IPLD) of auditory brain stem evoked potentials (ABEP). ABEP were recorded in response to click stimuli presented at a rate of 10/sec and 55/sec. The net effect of increasing stimulus rate (ISR) on IPLD of ABEP was significantly greater in the hyperlipidemic patients for IPLD (V-I) and IPLD (III-I). ISR of ABEP indicates a trend of subclinical impairments of brain stem function in hyperlipidemic patients, probabl…

The effects of hyperventilation on the pattern-reversal visual evoked potential (VEP) were studied in seven normal subjects and 13 multiple sclerosis patients with visual pathway involvement. Significantly greater reductions in P100 latency occurred in the multiple sclerosis patients than in controls and normalisation of the half-field response topography occurred in one patient after hyperventilation. The VEP changes are attributed to improved impulse transmission in demyelinated fibres in the visual pathway as a result of the alkalosis and changes in ionised calcium levels induced by hyperve

Evoked potentials (EPs) were studied in patients with endogenic depression prior to and during the therapy. It was found that a reduction in the maximum amplitude of EPs reflecting the initial severity of depression could not serve as an indicator of its time-course in the treatment by tricyclic antidepressants. In contrast, the newly identified electrophysiological sign of endogenic depression, a number of EP waves, shifted toward normalization in the process of the treatment parallelled by a decrease in the severity of the depressive syndrome.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the diagnostic value of using brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BSEP) in patients with the lateral medullary (Wallenberg's) syndrome. The observed changes included: prolongation of the interpeak latency intervals from wave I to V and III to V; prolongation of the interaural latency difference for wave V; splitting or absence of wave III, and the presence of a broad partly fused wave III-V complex. The present study showed that BSEP can be used to confirm the diagnosis of this syndrome and ascertain the site of the lesion.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 23 children who had signs of brain-stem or cerebellar dysfunction. In patients with brain-stem gliomas, BAEPs were abnormal in all except one, in whom involvement of the brain-stem auditory pathway was limited to the midbrain tectum. The BAEPs were normal in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, but abnormal bilaterally in inheritable leukoencephalopathies. All patients with Leigh's encephalopathy had BAEP abnormalities; in two, abnormalities occurred before the appearance of lesions on computed tomographic scan. Patients with Friedreich…

In an attempt to resolve some of the reported disagreements between visual evoked potential (VEP) recordings and Snellen visual acuity in patients with multiple sclerosis, we compared these test results with sine-wave grating-contrast sensitivity curves. Disease that depressed visual sensitivity for high spatial frequencies, sparing low spatial frequencies, was associated with depressed visual acuity and attenuated small-check VEPs in the affected eye, while large-check VEPs were not attenuated. When visual sensitivity to all spatial frequencies was depressed, both large-check and small-check

Surface electrodes positioned over the S1 and T12 vertebrae and referenced to T6 were used to record spinal potentials evoked by unilateral stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve at the knee. Data were collected on 24 patients who received spinal cord injuries 2 months to 31 years previously. The recording sites were below the level of spinal injury. The lumbosacral evoked potentials (LSEPs) were compared with the results of measurements obtained from 19 neurologically healthy subjects. Additional data were collected on each patient to characterize segmental reflex responses and preservatio…

Seven adult, conditioned dogs were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium and prepared for measurement of upper lumbar, mid-thoracic and lower cervical spinal evoked potentials (SEPs), cortical evoked potential (CEP), and aortic, right ventricular, and cerebrospinal fluid pressures. Following preparation, one animal was monitored by means of repeated evoked potentials for 2 h, at which time a [14C]iodoantipyrine autoradiographic blood flow study was performed. The 6 other animals were exposed to simulated dives in a compression chamber while anesthesia was maintained through a chamber penetrat…

Computer-averaged short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SLSEP) to unilateral stimulation of the peroneal nerve were recorded from surface electrodes overlying the peripheral nerve, cauda equina, spinal cord, brainstem, and contralateral sensorimotor region. Seven monkeys were studied under normal conditions and at various stages of distal axonopathy induced by systematic acrylamide intoxication. With the use of a noncephalic reference, a series of five small-amplitude positive components were identified that precede the initial cortical activity. On the basis of timing and topography …

Forty-two patients were tested with pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEPs) 1--8 years after an episode of acute unilateral optic neuritis. The stimulation was produced by dot as well as checker-board pattern. An unexpectedly large proportion (12 cases) showed normal VEP latencies from the affected eye. In these patients the initial visual acuity was on the average significantly better than in cases with prolonged VEP latencies. They also had significantly fewer remaining ocular signs than the patients with abnormal VEPs. On the other hand, no correlation was found between the VEP fin…

Clinical and electrophysiological observations are described in 7 patients with clinically well-identified vascular lesions of the brain-stem or diencephalon. In the patients of Group A with a thalamic syndrome, the somatosensory cerebral evoked potentials had a reduced voltage and increased latency on the affected side. No significant anomalies were recorded in the patients of Group B with a Wallenberg or Weber syndrome. In patients of group C with a locked-in syndrome, the cerebral evoked potentials presented marked bilateral anomalies which provided interesting data about the extension of t…

PURPOSE: To establish reproducibility of multifocal visual evoked potential (mfVEP) and traditional pattern-reversal VEP (tVEP) in normals and relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).
METHODS: mfVEP (60-sector dartboard) was recorded twice within a month in 40 normals and 40 RRMS patients [25 eyes with last optic neuritis (ON) ≥6 months, 34 non-ON]. mfVEP amplitude and latency (ms) were calculated as mean logSNR and median relative latency, respectively, for all 60 sectors (global) and 9 regions. tVEP was recorded (15', 60' and 120' checks) in subsets of 34 normals and 30 RRMS patients.
