[Analysis of risk factors of choroidal melanoma extraocular extension].

PURPOSE: To report the risk factors for extraocular extension of uveal melanoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 1144 enucleated eyes with ciliary body or/and choroidal melanoma. RESULTS: Extraocular extension or intrascleral invasion was found in 170 patients (14.86%), the nodular extraocular extension in 71 (6.20%). Extraocular extension was more common in older patients (> 50), large and medium size tumors, located close to the optic disc and mixed type.

Surgery for glaucoma.

Most cases of glaucoma in small animals ultimately require surgical treatment for long-term control of intraocular pressure. Surgical procedures that have the potential to preserve vision in acute cases are categorized into those that reduce aqueous production (cyclodestructive techniques). Salvage procedures for irreversibly blind eyes include enucleation, implantation of an intraocular prosthesis, and pharmacologic ciliary body ablation. The indications, surgical technique, and complications of these procedures are discussed in this article.

Iris melanoma with increased intraocular pressure. Differentiation of focal solitary tumors from diffuse or multiple tumors.

A 70-year-old man presented with an apparent focal iris ciliary body mass and increased intraocular pressure. Fine needle aspiration biopsy 180 degrees from the main lesion demonstrated uveal melanoma cells in the angle. The eye was enucleated, and multiple separate iris and ciliary body melanomas were noted. This case demonstrates the usefulness of fine needle aspiration biopsy for both diagnosis and optimum therapy in selected cases.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa scleritis.

In two patients Pseudomonas aeruginosa scleral infection led to ocular perforation. In one patient, a scleral abscess was identified anteriorly. A scleral perforation occurred at a more posterior focus, but the eye was salvaged with minimal residual visual function. In the other patient, perforation at the corneoscleral limbus occurred after initial corneal improvement with antibiotic therapy; histopathologic examination of the enucleated globe disclosed an abscess extending from the corneoscleral limbus to the equator superiorly.

[Familiary arhinia combined with peters' anomaly and maxilliar deformities, a new malformation syndrome (author's transl)].

A report is given on two sisters with arhinia, hypertelorism, Peters' anomaly and deformities of the maxilla. The lacrimal sacs in both patients were extirpated because of recurrent dacryoadenitis due to bilateral aplasia of the nasolacrimal ducts. One eye showing Peters' anomaly with microphthalmus was enucleated in the elder patient 12 years ago. Differential diagnosis includes frontonasal dysplasia and the different types of holoprosencephaly-syndromes. Probably this new malformation syndrome is a recessive inherited.

Migration of a wooden foreign body into the lens: report of a case.

A penetrating ocular injury caused by a tree branch resulted in a small corneoscleral laceration that healed after primary repair. Post-traumatic inflammation persisted and a vitreous mass developed. The mass finally protruded through the pupil and touched the posterior cornea. Histologic examination of the enucleated eye showed that the lens had been replaced by a wooden foreign body that filled the pupillary space and was surrounded by lens capsule. No intact lens fibers remained.

Suspected Spontaneous Aqueous Humor Misdirection Syndrome in a Boston Terrier.

An eight-year-old female spayed Boston Terrier presented to the North Carolina Veterinary Hospital with glaucoma in the left eye (OS). Initial ophthalmic examination revealed moderate ocular hypertension, a diffusely and markedly shallow anterior chamber with anteriorly displaced iris and lens, vitreal prolapse, and a normal iridocorneal angle (ICA) morphology. The patient displayed a paradoxical response to topical latanoprost with an increase in intraocular pressure. These examination findings led to a putative diagnosis of spontaneous aqueous humor misdirection syndrome (AHMS). The patient

Trabeculectomy in eyes with unsuspected retinoblastoma.

BACKGROUND: To report the management and clinical outcome of children with unsuspected retinoblastoma who underwent trabeculectomy surgery. METHODS: Three children who presented to us after trabeculectomy surgery were diagnosed with retinoblastoma. They were treated with enucleation of the affected eye. Histopathology of the enucleated eyeball showed tumor infiltration into the iris and the ciliary body in two cases, and massive choroidal invasion in the third case. Six cycles of adjuvant systemic chemotherapy with carboplatin, vincristine and etoposide were given. RESULTS: The follow-up ran

Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) adenoma mimicking retinoblastoma in a child.

The authors report a rare case of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) adenoma in a child who presented with blurred vision in the right eye for 5 years. Examination revealed visual acuity of light perception with a giant, retrolental yellowish-white mass in the right eye. Ultrasonography revealed an intraocular mass with areas of calcification within the lesion. MRI confirmed an intraocular lesion which was hyperintense on T1-weighted imaging and hypointense on T2-weighted imaging. A provisional diagnosis of right group E retinoblastoma (RB) was made, and enucleation was performed. Based on clini

Adult ocular toxocariasis mimicking ciliary body malignancy.

Purpose. To discuss an unusual presentation of ocular toxocariasis. Methods. Case report. Results. A 40-year-old woman presented with decreased vision in the left eye with a long history of recurrent red eye from uveitis. Eosinophilia and positive ELISA titers for Toxocara canis favored the diagnosis of ocular toxocariasis. Over 3 months, an anterior scleral mass had a rapid growth raising the possibility of medulloepithelioma, which rarely can mimic uveitic syndromes. Surgical plan changed from local excision to enucleation. Histopathology demonstrated a large homogeneous mass of chronic infl

Anterior chamber collapse syndrome in a koala.

BACKGROUND: Anterior chamber collapse syndrome has been recognised in various species and is associated with early-life ocular disease or trauma. It is important to differentiate this acquired condition from a congenital malformation. CASE REPORT: An adult female koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) was referred for assessment of buphthalmos and severe keratitis of the right eye. The degree of keratitis obstructed examination of intraocular structures. Enucleation of the affected eye was performed and the histopathological diagnosis was anterior chamber collapse syndrome and secondary glaucoma. Thi

Astrocytic hamartoma in tuberous sclerosis mimicking necrotizing retinochoroiditis.

A pale, elevated peripapillary lesion discovered in a young child with no family history of phakomatoses, grew larger, caused vitreous hemorrhage and underwent necrosis. Secondary inflammation developed in the eye, finally producing rubeosis irides with elevated intraocular pressure and a blind, painful eye which required enucleation. Clinically, the lesion was variably diagnosed and treated as toxoplasmosis and toxocara canis. These diagnoses were made despite low titres, a negative ELISA test and a normal eosinophil count. On histopathologic examination, a diagnosis of toxocara canis was ent

Mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body associated with a nevus.

A ciliary body tumor that was believed clinically to be a malignant melanoma developed in a 28-year-old woman and led to enucleation of her eye. The light microscopic appearance of the tumor was interpreted by light microscopy as a neurogenic neoplasm, possibly a choristomatous astrocytoma. Electron microscopic studies disclosed the smooth muscle origin of the tumor. Results of experimental embryologic studies performed on lower animals have proved that the neural crest contributes most of the connective tissues, "mesectoderm," of the globe and orbit in these species. The occurrence of hybrid

A rare case of traumatic subretinal migration of crystalline lens, corroborated histologically.

Blunt trauma is the most common cause of posterior dislocation of the crystalline lens. We describe a rare case of subretinal migration of crystalline lens through the giant retinal tear following blunt ocular trauma. This incidental finding of subretinal dislocation of lens following blunt ocular trauma was confirmed on histopathological examination of the enucleated eye. This complication has not been described by histopathological examination in literature so far.

ELISA for diagnosis of ocular toxocariasis.

The enzyme-linked immunosorbed assay test was positive in 37 of 41 patients (90%) suspected of having clinical Toxocara infections. The antigen used in this test is prepared from the Toxocara egg and is felt to be extremely specific in making the diagnosis. The prevalence of Toxocara infection is much greater than previously believed. It is hoped that this test will help the surgeon fell more secure in not enucleating eyes containing masses suggestive of Toxocara infection.

Acute-onset endophthalmitis following pars plana vitrectomy for symptomatic vitreous opacities: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for symptomatic vitreous opacities, commonly referred to as floaterectomy, is an increasingly performed elective procedure that can meaningfully improve quality of life. However, like all intraocular surgery, it carries the risk of endophthalmitis. To our knowledge, only 2 cases of this complication following floaterectomy have previously been reported. The purpose of this study is to report the largest series of acute-onset bacterial endophthalmitis following floaterectomy, characterizing clinical presentation, causative organisms, antibiotic susceptibi

Multifocal Retinocytoma Associated With Intronic Acceptor Splice Site Variants in the RB1 Gene.

Retinocytomas are benign tumors that arise from mutations in the RB1 gene. Previous research describes the appearance of retinocytomas as that of treated retinoblastoma (Rb) lesions, with characteristics such as chorioretinal atrophy, calcification, and a lack of necrosis or mitotic activity on histopathology. We present the unusual case of an asymptomatic seven-year-old girl with two independent translucent masses in the peripheral retina of the right eye (OD) and extensive intraretinal tumor and vitreous seeds. Initial fundus examination and B-scan ultrasonography documented the two lesions

Implantation of the Black Artisan Iris-Claw Intraocular Lens: A Case Series.

In this case series, we report the use of the black Artisan iris-claw intraocular lens (IOL) (Ophtec, The Netherlands) in 6 patients with various visually debilitating symptoms requesting occlusion of one eye. Between 2016 and 2019, 6 (5 female, 1 male) patients underwent implantation of the custom-made black Artisan iris-claw IOL after other management strategies had failed to relieve their symptoms. The black Artisan IOL is an opaque anterior chamber IOL that is fixated to the iris by enclavation. Data were obtained from the electronic patient records (Epic, Verona, WI, USA). All implantatio
