A 38-year-old man with hypogammaglobulinemia and pulmonary Nocardia asteroides infection developed an intraocular Nocardia infection. The diagnosis was confirmed by examination of a specimen removed at pars plana vitrectomy. In this case report, a 42-year-old man who had sex with other men presented with conjunctivitis, which later was diagnosed as gonorrhoeal conjunctivitis. Gonorrhoeal conjunctivitis is associated with a high risk of severe eye infections and resulting complications. It is important to perform swabs for gonorrhoea from all relevant anatomical locations. Through complete microbiological diagnostics and treatment with recommended antibiotics, a gonorrhoeal conjunctivitis infection can be effectively treated.

We studied bacterial contamination of corneal donor material following processing by two techniques prior to immersion in McCarey-Kaufman medium. If the whole eye was immersed in Neosporin, 24.5% of cultures were positive. If eyes were only rinsed with Neosporin, 47.5% of cultures were positive. No eyes receiving this tissue developed infections. Cultures were much more likely to be positive if the donors had been on a respirator prior to death.

PURPOSE: To evaluate a keratoprosthesis, implanted by penetrating keratoplasty, in rabbits.
METHODS: We implanted our keratoprosthesis (optics and flange portions of polymethylmethacrylate and a polyurethane skirt with micropores) into 14 eyes of 14 rabbits. In four eyes, we evaluated histologically the junction between the keratoprosthesis and host cornea. Long-term keratoprosthesis survival was evaluated in ten eyes by slit-lamp biomicroscopy.

The histological reactions in 12 eyes of 12 leprosy patients were studied (5 BT, 1 BB, 1 BL and 5 LL).
