Nasal fractures have been reported as 1 of the 3 most commonly encountered pediatric facial bone fractures. The most common causes of nasal fractures in this age group are auto accidents (40%), sports injuries (25%), intended injuries (15%), and home injuries (10%). Nasal fractures are usually treated with closed reduction (Higuera S, Lee EI, Stal S. Nasal trauma and the deviated nose. Plast Reconstr Surg 2007;120:64S-75S). This results in a significant incidence of posttraumatic deformities, often requiring secondary surgical treatment. For this reason, it is paramount to pay careful attentio

INTRODUCTION: Facial fractures of children are relatively infrequent compared to adults. There are variations in facial fractures depending on the socioeconomic, cultural, and educational factors of the country and time. Our aim is to describe epidemiological trends of facial fractures in the pediatric population, understand differences amongst the age groups, and the impact this has on clinical outcomes and management in South Australia.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted from January 2012 to January 2017 at the Women and Children's Hosptial, Adelaide. All facial fractures of chil

OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare the prevalence and pattern of dental and craniofacial injuries sustained by conventional two-wheeler riders versus electric two-wheeler (e-bike/e-scooter) riders involved in road traffic accidents (RTAs), and to evaluate the role of protective gear, riding practices, and behavioral factors on injury outcomes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six hundred and fifty-two riders (340 conventional two-wheelers, 312 e-bike/e-scooter) were examined and interviewed from an urban setting using a structured questionnaire. Data encompassed demographics, vehicle type, compliance with…

Temporal bone cholesteatoma is a common invasive lesion affecting the temporal bone, leading to a series of extracranial and intracranial complications, with facial nerve paralysis being one. The treatment of temporal bone cholesteatoma typically requires surgical resection to prevent its complications. The article discusses the preservation of the facial nerve during temporal bone cholesteatoma surgery, the management of intraoperative facial nerve injury, and the treatment of cholesteatoma-associated facial paralysis.

Tracing the facial nerve trunk is an essential action in parotid surgery, because of the implications of injury to the nerve or its branches. More than a few landmarks that may help the surgeon in this task have been proposed (e.g., the posterior belly of the digastric muscle, the tragal pointer, among others), under the assumption that additional access methods improve the surgical technique and reduce the possibility of harmful post-operative consequences. Here we present evidence that the posterior auricular nerve may be used to trace the facial nerve trunk. We dissected 75 cadaveric hemine

Animal bites, primarily from dogs and cats, pose a significant threat, especially to children. Wound infections are common complications caused by bacterial flora in the animal's mouth, making surgical debridement and delayed primary closure the standard treatment. However, recent studies reported no increased infection rates with primary closure compared to delayed closure after adequate debridement, particularly for facial wounds. Primary closure offers better cosmetic and functional outcomes. This study presents a case series to guide decision-making on primary suturing versus leaving wound

BACKGROUND: The mandible and maxilla are the most robust facial bones, protecting the facial skull. Fractures of these bones rank among the most common facial injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents due to the exposed location of the face. Such injuries can have serious health consequences, from functional impairment to death.
METHODS: The review adhered to the PRISMA Guidelines. Conducted across four electronic databases: Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar. Keywords were selected based on a search strategy structured around the Population, Intervention, Comparison, and …

BACKGROUND: Significant hemorrhage from fractures of the midface is a recognized phenomenon, but because it is an uncommon occurrence, there is little in the literature to guide management of these patients.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective study of life-threatening hemorrhage in facial fracture patients attending the Royal Adelaide Hospital over 20 years and report four recent cases.
RESULTS: The incidence of massive hemorrhage was found to be 0.33 percent of patients with fracture of the midface or skull base over the 20 years before 2004 and 1.7 percent in the subsequent yea

BACKGROUND: With little in the published literature on the conservative management of facial fractures we set out to determine whether our current criteria for treatment are valid.
METHOD: Two hundred and thirty adult patients with fractures of the facial skeleton were treated conservatively by our unit between February 1997 and January 2003. Their notes were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: Most patients were males (76%), the average age was 38 years, and drugs or alcohol were a significant aspect of the history in 30% of the cases. The most common mechanism of injury was assault (47%), f

Facial burns frequently occur in child. A total of 197 burned patients with facial localisation were seen during the time period (1991-1996) covered by this retrospective study. One hundred and sixteen patients were less than three years old. A quarter of the child were issued from poor social classes with nine cases of child abuse by burning. One hundred and thirteen injuries were performed by hot water or drinks. The total burn area was less than 10% in 63% of the cases. The average facial burned area was 4%. The cheek, the front and the chin were often concerned. Low limbs and trunk were un

BACKGROUND: The nature of duties in the Armed Forces predisposes its personnel to various kinds of injuries. The rise in violence coupled with an exponential increase in motorized population has contributed towards maxillofacial injuries. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence, cause and pattern of various injuries resulting in fracture of the zygomaticomaxillary complex in Armed Forces personnel and their families.
METHODS: A study was conducted between January 2001 - December 2002 in maxillofacial surgical wing of an Army Dental Centre with specific regard to age, sex, locatio…

BACKGROUND: The optimal timing for surgical exploration of traumatic facial paralysis to best preserve facial function is currently controversial. This article reviews the final outcomes of facial function in patients with traumatic intratemporal facial nerve injury according to the timing of surgical exploration.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 58 patients with complete facial nerve paralysis caused by temporal bone fractures as a result of head trauma between 1998 and 2007. Patients were divided into three groups according to the type of trauma. The only difference between p

Road traffic accidents (RTA) are the major cause of maxillofacial injuries (MFIs) in developing countries (Akama et al. 2007). Road traffic accidents were reported to be the 9th most common cause of death and morbidity in the world and are expected to rise to 3rd position by 2020 (Peden et al. 2002). Maxillofacial injuries remain a serious clinical problem because of the involvement of complex anatomic region. Facial fractures occur most commonly in males in the third decade of life (Motamedi et al. 2014). The goal of treatment in facial fractures is to achieve anatomic reduction and restore f…

BACKGROUND: Mandibular fractures account for up to 48.8% of pediatric facial fractures; however, there are a wide range of available treatment modalities, and few studies describe trends in adverse outcomes of these injuries. This study describes fracture cause, pattern, management, and treatment outcomes in pediatric mandibular fracture patients.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of patients younger than 18 years who were evaluated for mandibular fractures at a pediatric level I trauma center between 2006 and 2021. Variables studied included demographics, cause, medical history,
