OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical efficacy of a modified paramedian lower lip-submandibular approach for maxillary (subtotal) total resection.
METHODS: Eleven patients of maxillary tumors underwent maxillary (subtotal) total resection through the modified paramedian lower lip-submandibular approach. Clinical follow-up visits were conducted to evaluate appearance restoration, facial nerve functional status, parotid gland functional status, and orbital region complication.
RESULTS: During the follow-up period of 6-36 months, the appearance of all 11 patients recovered well. All cases pres

BACKGROUND: Patients with large vestibular schwannomas are at high risk of poor facial nerve (cranial nerve VII [CNVII]) function after surgery. Subtotal resection potentially offers better outcome, but may lead to higher tumor regrowth.
OBJECTIVE: To assess long-term CNVII function and tumor regrowth in patients with large vestibular schwannomas.
METHODS: Prospective multicenter nonrandomized cohort study of patients with vestibular schwannoma ≥2.5 cm who received gross total resection, near total resection, or subtotal resection. Patients received radiation if tumor remnant showed signs of

Facial erythema may not only present clinically as a distinct entity, but can also be a symptom of other diseases. It is seen in common dermatoses such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and urticaria, as well as in rarer conditions such as disorders of keratinization, infectious diseases, porphyrias and neoplasia. Facial erythema may also present as a symptom of carcinoid syndrome, drug allergies, cardiac disease or in rare cases as a feature of Bloom's syndrome, sarcoidosis, lymphoma, amyloidosis and other disease processes. We would like to concentrate on the practical aspects of facial erythema as

The circular excisions of facial skin lesions were performed in 202 sites on 126 patients. The shapes of the resultant defects were observed to identify the directions of skin tensions in a static state. The round shapes remained in the forehead, temple, and nose. In the other areas of the face, the wounds were stretched in certain directions and became elliptical. The orientations of the facial static tensions were identical to the wrinkle lines in many facial areas. It is suggested that the wrinkle lines show the optimal directions of selective incisions in most facial areas except for the m

Fifty-four maxillofacial three-dimensional computed tomographic examinations were performed during a 12-month period for the purpose of surgical planning. Pathologic entities in the series included trauma, neoplasia, cleft palate, and other developmental anomalies. Computer-assisted mandibular disarticulation was performed routinely after each study to permit direct viewing of the mandible or maxilla in isolation. Three-dimensional computed tomography is a useful technique for maxillofacial surgical planning.

The ability of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the face to cause ophthalmoplegia or central nervous system dysfunction via perineural spread is not well recognized. Five patients presenting to a general neurology unit are described in whom partial or complete ophthalmoplegia developed following fifth and seventh cranial nerve involvement by cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. Two patients subsequently developed a contralateral hemiparesis; and one, multiple cranial nerve palsies as the tumor spread centrally. Normal radiologic findings or complete healing of the primary skin lesion caused

Facial nerve schwannomas (FNSs) eroding through the external auditory canal (EAC) are unusual and present difficult management options. When facial nerve function is normal, observation is generally recommended. If the tumor completely obstructs the EAC creating a conductive hearing loss as in this case, mapping of the motor fibers of the facial nerve may be considered with partial resection to alleviate the conductive hearing loss.Test injection of a small volume of lidocaine did not cause facial paresis.Intraoperative mapping allow successful tumor debulking and wide patency of the EAC. We developed the orbicularis oris myomucosal island flap (OOMMIF) to reconstruct the nasal lining in one stage. The OOMMIF blood supply derives from the intramuscular vascular network which communicates with the submucosal vascular plexus via the vascular network formed by the deep ascending branches of the superior labial artery. An oral mucosal flap of approximately 2 x 3cm can be harvested from the upper lip pedicled solely on the orbicularis oris muscle. We transferred this flap to a nasal lining defect located in the ala in four patients, the nasal floor in two patients, and the columella

Nine patients with cancer of the parotid glands were operated on. Parotidectomies involved resection of the facial nerve. In 3 patients neuroplasty was simultaneously carried out: the nerve was epineurally sutured end-to-end. Facial nerve function recovered in these patients.

In the light of four clinical cases of paediatric facial reconstruction, the authors discuss the advantages and indications of the cutaneous expansion technique which can be combined with other plastic surgery procedures to obtain an abundant skin with ideal texture and sensitivity and minimal scars. Operations for cicatricial alopecia, very extensive forehead naevus, preauricular tumour and nasal mutilation are described.

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) expand slowly in the internal auditory canal, in the cerebellopontine angle, inside the cochlear and the labyrinth. Larger tumors can displace and compress the brainstem. With an annual incidence of 1:100,000 vestibular schwannoma represent 6-7% of all intracranial tumors. In the cerebellopontine angle they are by far the most neoplasm with 90% of all lesions located in this region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), audiometry, and vestibular diagnostics are the mainstays of the clinical workup for patients harboring tumors. The first part of this paper delivers an
