Developing the ACEIG-scale: An adverse childhood experience scale for Inuit youth in Greenland.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been identified as a major public health challenge in Greenland. No previous studies have created a multi-item ACE- scale among an Arctic Indigenous population. OBJECTIVE: To develop a multi-item ACE-scale among Inuit youth in Greenland (the ACEIG scale). METHODS: The ACEIG scale was created with data from the 'Wellbeing among Inuit youth in Greenland'-survey. Scale items were based on a recognised ACE-scale and further adapted to the context of Inuit youth in Greenland by adding items relevant for the population. The scale was validated

SRY-related HMG-box 5 enhances chemosensitivity in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma through toll-like receptor 4/NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3-mediated pyroptosis.

Despite established roles in multiple cancers, the specific function and molecular mechanism of SRY-related HMG-box 5 (SOX5) remain elusive in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). SOX5 expression in ESCC tissues, its correlation with prognosis, and its relationship with toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) were assessed with bioinformatic methods. Expression of SOX5 and TLR4 in ESCC cells was detected by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. In SOX5-overexpressing or TLR4-knockdown ESCC cells, cell death was ev

The Clostridium perfringens Tet P determinant comprises two overlapping genes: tetA(P), which mediates active tetracycline efflux, and tetB(P), which is related to the ribosomal protection family of tetracycline-resistance determinants.

The complete nucleotide sequence and mechanism of action of the tetracycline-resistance determinant, Tet P, from Clostridium perfringens has been determined. Analysis of the 4.4 kb of sequence data revealed the presence of two open reading frames, designated as tetA(P) and tetB(P). The tetA(P) gene appears to encode a 420 amino acid protein (molecular weight 46,079) with twelve transmembrane domains. This gene was shown to be responsible for the active efflux of tetracycline from resistant cells. Although there was some amino acid sequence similarity between the putative TetA(P) protein and ot

School adjustment in sixth graders: parenting transitions, family climate, and peer norm effects.

This study examined whether sixth graders' (mean age = 11.86 years) adjustment to the school context (assessed by grades, achievement scores, and disruptive behavior) was affected by factors from both the family context (represented by students' reports of the number of parenting transitions experienced as well as current levels of supervision, acceptance, autonomy granting, and conflict in the family) and the peer context (represented by students' perceptions of peer norms supporting academic excellence). School adjustment was related to the number of parenting transitions experienced, family

Discrepancies in mother and child perceptions of spina bifida medical responsibilities during the transition to adolescence: associations with family conflict and medical adherence.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated mother-child discrepancies over perceptions of who is responsible for spina bifida (SB) medical tasks in relation to family conflict and medical adherence. METHOD: 140 youth with SB and their mothers completed questionnaires regarding who is responsible for specific SB medical tasks, family conflict, and medical adherence. An observational measure was also used to assess family conflict. RESULTS: Although children viewed themselves as more responsible for medical management than mothers did, mother-child discrepancies were not associated with family conflic

Adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: mother-adolescent interactions, family beliefs and conflicts, and maternal psychopathology.

A group of 83 adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were subdivided into those with ADHD alone (n = 27) and those with ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder (ADHD/ODD, n = 56). They were compared to each other and a community control group (n = 77) on measures of family conflicts, family beliefs, maternal adjustment, and observations of mother-adolescent interactions during both a neutral and conflict discussion. Both ADHD groups had more topics on which there was conflict and more angry conflicts at home than control adolescents on parent reports. Only the ADHD/ODD

[Paranoid delusions and homicides inside or outside the family].

Paranoia is a mental pathology which severely complicates interpersonal relationships. Its mechanisms and its delusional themes often mean that paranoid subjects have strained, or even violent relations inside and/or outside their family. These difficuIt relationships can sometimes even lead to serious assaults without causing death or more rarely result in homicides with frequent pre-incident indicators.

The bottom-up approach in multigenerational family therapy: The child as the family guide.

In therapy, the child is mainly seen as a problem to be labeled or as a victim of various forms of abuse. The idea of the child as a therapeutic resource is the central point of my article where children's symptoms are quickly reframed and get a relational meaning in the family. Once the relational competence of the child is appreciated and his voice is heard, the child becomes a special guide to explore the emotional world of his family, and the genogram can provide a wonderful platform to start this therapeutic journey. Using a multigenerational lens, I describe how to explore family develop

Life satisfaction of young adults with spina bifida.

This study concerns life satisfaction and its determinants in Dutch young adults with spina bifida (SB). Data on life satisfaction (Life Satisfaction Questionnaire [LiSat-9]) were related to hydrocephalus, lesion level, disabilities, and demographic variables. In total, 179 young adults with SB participated (41% male, age range 16-25y; 79% SB aperta, 67% hydrocephalus [HC], 39% wheelchair-dependent). Most were satisfied with their life as a whole (24% dissatisfied). No difference was found from a population reference group (28% dissatisfied). Highest proportions of dissatisfaction were found f

[How to manage HIV seropositive or AIDS patients in rural Burkina Faso?].

This article is based on an ethnographical study carried out in 1996. It describes and analyzes the methods of medical and family management of HIV-positive and full-blown AIDS patients in the rural environment of Burkinabé. A number of recommendations are made. Biomedical management of these patients is almost non-existent (currently there is no serology or screening advice available at the dispensary). The patient is never informed of an AIDS diagnosis. The relations between the medical personnel and the patients are dominated by a sense of powerlessness and constant fear of infection. None

Family Systems and Emotional Functioning in Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing Preschool Children.

This study examined how deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) and typically hearing (TH) children may differ in their family system and emotional functioning and examined the relations between family system and children's emotional functioning. Parents of 106 DHH and 99 TH children (2-6 years) reported on family cohesion and adaptability, parental emotion communication, and their child's emotional functioning. The DHH children were rated lower on family cohesion and positive emotion expression than the TH children. Higher levels of family cohesion related to more positive emotion expression in TH chil

Behavior of children undergoing hypospadias repair.

We performed a prospective study on 10 boys between 2 and 6 years old undergoing repair for hypospadias. Clinical observation in the hospital ward rooms and play environment demonstrated a distinctive postoperative course of withdrawal and aggressive behavior with resultant increased parental anxiety, which results in strained staff-family relations. We speculate that this distinctive behavior may be owing to an interaction among parental attitudes, the pain and immobilization from operation and the level of the child's sexual development. Intervention was designed to give the boys behavioral …

NOD-like receptor X1 promotes autophagy and inactivates NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 inflammasome signaling by binding autophagy-related gene 5 to alleviate cerebral ischemia/reperfusion-induced neuronal injury.

Ischemic strokes pose serious risks to human health. We aimed to elucidate the function of NOD-like receptor X1 (NLRX1) in a rat middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO)-induced cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CIRI) model and in an oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R)-treated human microglial cell line (HMC3) model. Following NLRX1 upregulation, infarct volumes were measured with 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining and pathological examination was conducted with hematoxylin-eosin staining. Results suggested that levels of NLRX1 were decreased in brain tissue of MCAO rat

Pain-Related Gene Solute Carrier Family 24 Member 3 Is a Prognostic Biomarker and Correlated with Immune Infiltrates in Cervical Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Endocervical Adenocarcinoma: A Study via Integrated Bioinformatics Analyses and Experimental Verification.

The aim of this study was to explore cervical carcinoma and screen a suitable gene as the biomarker used for prognosis evaluation as well as pain therapy. Low expression levels of solute carrier family 24 member 3 (SLC24A3) was involved in the appearance and development of numerous malignancies. Nevertheless, the prognostic value of SLC24A3 expression with cervical squamous cell carcinoma and endocervical adenocarcinoma (CESC) patients remains uncertain. During the present study, SLC24A3 expression in CESC was retrieved from TCGA, GEO, and MSigDB databases. Based on TCGA and GEO profiles, we p
