In the recent years an increase of serious invasive infections due to Group A Streptococcus have been reported. Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection characterized by necrosis of the subcutaneous tissues and superficial fascia. We report a case of necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome following cervical adenitis in a previously healthy 11-month-old boy. Cultures from blood and the necrotic lymph node grew Group A Streptococcus. Group A Streptococcus belonging to M1 serotype and producing streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin, SPE A was identified. OBJECTIVE: An increase in the incidence of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) occurring in previously healthy children with primary varicella was noted in the Washington State area between December 1993 and June 1995. Our objective was to investigate ibuprofen use and other risk factors for NF in the setting of primary varicella.
METHODS: Case-control study. Demographic information, clinical parameters, and potential risk factors for NF were compared for cases and controls. Cases of NF were analyzed to identify potential determinants of NF complicated by renal insufficiency and/or streptococcal toxic

Necrotizing fasciitis is a destructive soft tissue infection that is most typically caused by group A streptococci or a combination of facultative and anaerobic bacteria. Patients at risk for the development of necrotizing fasciitis often have compromised immune function or poor tissue perfusion. This report describes a case of necrotizing fasciitis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans, a pathogen not previously associated with this primary destructive soft tissue infection. The process occurred in a patient at risk for the development of opportunistic infection. We briefly review the risk factor

Necrotizing fasciitis of previous surgical wound developed in a leukemic patient after receiving intense postremission chemotherapy. A unique feature was profound granulocytopenia and the recovery of Escherichia coli in the blood and necrotic tissue. We believe the hematogenous seeding of the surgical wound during the episode of E. coli septicemia was the cause of our patient's necrotizing fasciitis.

Perianal infection in a 40-year-old man resulted in extensive necrotizing fasciitis of the retroperitoneal space and septic shock. Despite the fact that radiography revealed linear streaking in the belly of the psoas muscle due to gas formation, the nature of the infection was necrotizing fasciitis and not myonecrosis. This contradicts Brightmore's contention that such a finding always indicates clostridial myonecrosis. Despite the absence of Clostridium welchii, necrotizing fascitis is none the less extremely serious, usually occurring in the limbs or abdominal wall superficial to muscle laye

BACKGROUND: We conducted this study to promote a modified Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis (MLRINEC) score and evaluate the utility in distinguishing necrotizing fasciitis (NF) from other soft-tissue infections.
METHOD: A retrospective cohort study of hospitalized patients with NF diagnosed by surgical finding was conducted in two tertiary hospital in southern Taiwan between January 2015 and January 2020. Another group was matched by controls with non-necrotizing soft tissue infections based on time, demographics, and immune status. Data such as infectious location, comorbi

OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate a scoring system integrating MRI and laboratory findings to differentiate necrotizing fasciitis (NF) from non-necrotizing fasciitis (non-NF).
METHODS: This retrospective study included 144 subjects who underwent surgery in one of three tertiary referral centers for NF or cellulitis with non-NF. The development cohort consisted of 96 subjects (NF = 47; non-NF = 49) from one center, and the validation cohort consisted of 48 subjects (NF = 23; cellulitis with non-NF = 25) from two different centers. The Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis (LRIN

Objective:To summarize the clinical characteristics and management experience of complications in patients with cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) with or without descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM), in order to provide a basis for optimizing diagnosis and treatment strategies. Methods:A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 31 patients diagnosed with CNF and DNM at Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University between October 2019 and March 2024. A comprehensive evaluation was performed based on the patients' clinical characterist

CASE: A 50-year-old woman presented to our emergency department with hand pain and a laceration. Despite administration of antibiotics, the patient progressively worsened leading to a concern for a necrotizing soft-tissue infection. She underwent multiple debridements yet continued to worsen clinically. Tissue biopsy was eventually consistent with a necrotizing neutrophilic dermatosis. The patient was then started on oral steroids with rapid improvement of her clinical status and hand examination.
CONCLUSION: While neutrophilic dermatoses are rare, the orthopaedic surgeon treating soft-tissue

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare but potentially fatal infection, involving the subcutaneous tissue and fascia. The incidence of NF worldwide ranges from 0.30 to 15 cases per 100,000 populations and mortality remains high at 25 %.
OBJECTIVES: To classify severity of necrotizing fasciitis and assess the prognosis of necrotizing fasciitis using the LRINEC Scoring system.
METHODS: A thorough history and detailed clinical examination was done. Patient underwent necessary investigations like hemoglobulin, total leukocyte count, serum sodium, serum creatinine, random blood sugar,

Necrotizing fasciitis is a soft tissue infection that represents an emergency due to its alarmingly fast progression. It requires surgical debridement and antibiotics, but more advanced interventions can be needed, such as reconstructive procedures, including an Ollier-Thiersch dermograft, as in the case we are presenting. We introduce the history and clinical evolution of a patient with necrotizing fasciitis, who underwent dermoplasty of the right temporal region. This case report was conducted in the Plastic Surgery Service at Hospital Militar Escuela Dr. Alejandro Dávila Bolaños, during 202

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a soft tissue infection that is primarily characterized by fast spread along the fascial planes and adjacent cutaneous tissues. Cervico-facial necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) usually presents with severe intense pain with a polymicrobial odontogenic source. Early diagnosis with aggressive management, usually involving appropriate antibiotic selection, surgical debridement, and wound care, is key to achieving a good outcome. Management of CNF requires a multidisciplinary approach and poses several challenges in resource-constrained settings, especially in developing co

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a disease characterized by severe infection of the skin and its underlying soft tissues as the initial symptom. NF is known for its difficulty in early diagnosis and rapid progression. If not treated promptly, NF can quickly evolve into systemic infection, sepsis, and multiple organ failure, and it may even lead to patient death. Currently, many controversies and challenges remain in clinical practice for the diagnosis and treatment of NF. To promote the standardization of NF diagnosis and treatment, Chinese Burn Association, Editorial Board of the Chinese Journal

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection with high mortality. Aggressive and often repeated surgical debridements are considered the mainstay of treatment, but these interventions may cause significant postoperative morbidity. In this article, the authors present a rare case of orbital necrotizing fasciitis, which was treated with the use of a temporary indwelling retrobulbar drain for antibiotic delivery to deep orbital tissues, in lieu of aggressive debridement. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of this technique.
