Orthopaedic manifestations of congenital myotonic dystrophy during childhood and adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Congenital myotonic dystrophy (CMD) is a dominantly inherited disorder manifested in childhood by muscle weakness which can be profound at birth, but which progressively improves over the first few years. Congenital myotonic dystrophy represents the severe end of the spectrum of myotonic dystrophy, which in milder cases may not be diagnosed until adulthood. The goal of the study was to identify and quantitate the musculoskeletal deformities which may significantly affect the function of children with CMD. METHODS: A retrospective chart and radiograph review was performed after Ins

A dyadic perspective on parent and adolescent social media use: the roles of communication, joint technology use, and validation motives in problematic social media use.

BACKGROUND: Parents significantly influence adolescent behavior, yet research often overlooks dyadic interactions in shaping media use. Understanding how family members’ technology habits and communication relate to problematic media use (PMU) is critical for developing effective interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study used actor–partner interdependence modeling (APIM) to examine associations among time on social media, PMU, and three mediators (open communication, joint technology use, and validation motives) within parent–adolescent dyads. METHODS: Participants were 85 parent–adolescent dyads (

Parental self-efficacy in food allergy management: Determinants and challenges.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy management requires dietary adherence, prevention of accidental exposures, and prompt reaction management. Identifying sociodemographic factors linked to low self-efficacy may improve management. METHODS: This study was conducted among parents of children diagnosed with food allergy who presented to our clinic. Participants completed the Turkish version of the Food Allergy Self-Efficacy Scale for Parents (T-FASE-P, previously validated as EBA-ÖZ) and the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). RESULTS: A total of 280 parents (mothers, 85.4%; fathers, 14.6%) were included

Prominent Optic Disc Featured in Inherited Retinopathy.

Background We investigated the relationship between prominent optic disc (POD) and inherited retinal dystrophy (IRD). Patients and Methods A cross-sectional consecutive study was performed in 10 children and 11 adults of 7 non-related families. We performed clinical phenotyping, including a detailed examination, fundus autofluorescence, and colour fundus and OCT imaging. Genetic testing was subsequently performed for all family members presenting retinal pathology. Results In 4 members of a 3-generation family, hyperfluorescent deposits on the surface of POD were related to a p.(L224M) heteroz

Pubertal development in Mexican American girls: the family's perspective.

Mexican American (MA) girls are entering puberty earlier than in the past, yet few studies have explored the perceptions surrounding puberty among this group. We conducted separate focus groups for fathers, mothers, and daughters aged 6 to 12 years to explore perceptions of body image, pubertal development, communications, and sources of puberty-related information in MA participants. Our results revealed parental concerns about daughters' weight and pubertal development, as well as differences in their communication with their daughters. Although both parents willingly discussed pubertal issu

Families with physically handicapped children: social ecology and family systems.

This paper reviews research on families with physically handicapped children, and integrates this work within a social ecological perspective. Methodological difficulties in past research that contribute to a lack of consensus in the area are discussed. Research on stresses experienced by various subsystems within families with handicapped children is presented, with recommendations for future family-oriented research and intervention. The interactions of families with handicapped children with their social support networks are reviewed, underscoring the importance of these processes for copin

Perioperative trajectories and predictors of parental and child anxiety in pediatric ureterorenoscopy for urolithiasis: A prospective multi-time-point study.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric kidney stone disease is a health problem that may require invasive surgical interventions during childhood and can impose a substantial psychological burden on both the child and the family. Uncertainty regarding anesthesia, perioperative safety, postoperative pain, and early recovery/stone clearance may increase both parental and child anxiety. This study assessed perioperative anxiety in children undergoing kidney stone surgery and their parents, and identified demographic and clinical factors associated with anxiety. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective observationa

The Association of Headache and Physical Activity in Times of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Prospective studies of the risk of headache with low levels of physical activity are limited. Pandemic-related lifestyle changes and the potential headache risk associated with Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination may complicate this association. Our study aims to investigate the potential risk of new bothersome headache in relation to physical activity and explore the impact of COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 vaccines on this association. METHODS: This prospective cohort study utilized questionnaires from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). L

Unravelling symptom-specific polygenic effects on maternal mental health during the perinatal period and postpartum.

BACKGROUND: While genetic factors are important influences on maternal mental health, few studies have used symptom-level analyses to examine how genetic liability is related to the experience of specific mental health problems in mothers. A symptom-level approach can account for disorder heterogeneity and delineate key associations between genetic liabilities and mental health. METHODS: Three waves of data (30 weeks of gestation, 6 and 18 months postpartum) from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) were used to assess item-level associations between genetic liabilities

Knowledge level and access barriers related to sexual and reproductive health information among youth with disabilities in China: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Youth with disabilities have the same right to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) as their peers without disabilities. However, their needs and rights are often ignored. Little is known about the knowledge, needs and access barriers related to SRH information among youth with different types of disabilities in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out among 473 unmarried youth aged 15-24 with visual, hearing, physical disabilities in both urban and rural areas in China. RESULTS: Out of a maximum possible score of 100, respondent's median score ranged from 30 to 5

Psychometric Properties and Diagnostic Associations of the Short-Form Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences in a Population-Based Sample of 29 021 Adult Men.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Around 5%-7% of the adult population are estimated to have lifetime psychotic experiences (PEs), which are associated with psychosis risk. PEs assessed with Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE) are associated with psychosis but also non-psychotic disorders, which could be partly explained by CAPE indirectly capturing emotional symptoms. We investigated the psychometric properties of a shorter version, CAPE-9, and whether CAPE-9 scores are associated with lifetime psychotic or non-psychotic mental disorders after controlling for current anxiety and depre

Exome sequencing identifies a novel heterozygous TGFB3 mutation in a disorder overlapping with Marfan and Loeys-Dietz syndrome.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) and Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) are clinically related autosomal dominant systemic connective tissue disorders. Although mutations in several genes of the TGF-beta signalling and related pathways have been identified in the past (e.g. FBN1, TGFBR1, TGFBR2, SMAD3, TGFB2), there are still many individuals with "marfanoid" phenotypes in whom no causative mutations are identified. We performed whole exome sequencing in two of three affected individuals from a family with phenotypic features overlapping MFS and LDS. The two affected children and their affected father had tall s

Association of Adverse Childhood Experiences With Childhood Atopic Dermatitis in the United States.

Traumatic and stressful events of childhood, known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), have been associated with numerous health outcomes. However, little is known about ACEs in atopic dermatitis (AD) patients. We sought to determine the relationship between ACEs and childhood AD. Data were analyzed from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal birth cohort study that followed 4898 women and their children born in large US cities. Multivariable weighted logistic regression models adjusting for sociodemographics were constructed to determine the associations of ACEs w

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: New Zealand birth mothers' experiences.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to describe the 'lived' experiences of New Zealand birth mothers, from pregnancy onwards, of a child/ren diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). METHOD: A qualitative paradigm was utilized so that the participants could tell their stories through words and text rather than collecting statistical data which is the domain of quantitative research. The adoption of a feminist standpoint theory bridged a communication gap, adjusted the balance of power within society and gave visibility and voice to the women. Eight New Zealand-resident multipar

Using fatherhood to engage men in HIV services via maternal, neonatal and child health entry points in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: In South Africa, uptake of HIV services remains lower amongst men compared to women, resulting in poorer clinical outcomes. Several factors contribute to this situation, including stigma, confidentiality concerns, inconvenient clinic operating hours, fear of an HIV-positive test result, and long-waiting times. Additionally, women living with HIV are frequently identified whilst accessing other routine services, particularly antenatal and well-baby care. Novel approaches and strategies are needed to increase men's routine utilization of health services. For many men, fatherhood is

Childhood separation experience predicts HPA axis hormonal responses in late adulthood: a natural experiment of World War II.

BACKGROUND: Animal models have linked early maternal separation with lifelong changes in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis activity. Although this is paralleled in human studies, this is often in the context of other life adversities, for example, divorce or adoption, and it is not known whether early separation in the absence of these factors has long term effects on the HPA axis. AIMS: The Finnish experience in World War II created a natural experiment to test whether separation from a father serving in the armed forces or from both parents due to war evacuation are associate
